More than 300 Bay Area residents will rally January 7 to show solidarity with the family of Oscar Grant, and demand that the BART Police be held accountable!

The 22-year-old father was killed by a BART police officer early New Year's Day when he was shot in the back as he lay face-down on the train platform, his hands behind him.

Speakers will share a list of demands including:

1) All officers involved be taken off duty without pay, and fully prosecuted;
2) That the U.S. Justice Department investigate the incident as a violation of civil rights;
3) That BART establish an independent citizens’ review board for its officers; and
4) That the BART police officers be disarmed!

WHAT: Rally for Oscar Grant!

Can't sleep, goddamn I hate fucking Christmas! Post your X-mas horror stories here!

Always hated it, even as a kid. I liked getting presents of course, but the rest of the holiday sucked goat balls. Instead of isolating myself from the rest of the world and drinking and drugging myself into a coma like I usually do, I'm going to spend this Christmas volunteering, serving dinner to the homeless. For purely selfish reasons, I admit that freely, but what the fuck doing good is doing good right? Right? Ah, fuck you!
;+}

Anyway, it seems to have been fairly active around here lately, that's good. In the spirit of fairness, I'll tell you some of my more memorable Christmas moments.

Let's see, there was the Christmas that dad got drunk, beat up his old lady, and then proceeded to dropkick the Christmas tree across the living and through the big picture window. I was around ten years old or so at the time, but I clearly remember thinking that the tree looked oddly beautiful as it flew through the air for those few brief seconds.

Flash forward a few years, it's Christmastime once again, dad's in rehab and we're staying in the recently vacated house of someone he met in recovery, no electricity, no food, no tree, but there were a couple of presents for my sisters and I, step mommy signed us up for some kind of welfare Santa program. This was the one where the guy who delivers the presents is actually dressed up like Santa, even though when he brings the stuff it's still a couple of days before Christmas. How confusing that must have been for the poor kids who still believed. When he showed up at the cold empty house in his beat to shit Honda Accord, the guys breath smelled like cheap whiskey, and his eyes were cold and dead, like two piss holes in the snow. After an extremely half-hearted "Ho, Ho, Ho!" he gives us the wrapped packages. I'm twelve years old, almost thirteen. I get two gifts, one of which is clearly a basketball, (used, as I would find out when I was at long last allowed to tear off the paper on X-mas morning) the other one feels like some kind of cheap toy from the dollar store. (It was silly putty.) Before he leaves, step mommy asks him to come into the other room she would like to talk to him privately for a moment. I'm pretty sure she blows him, because when he walks out the door there's a new twinkle in Santa's eye, and having previously not had a single red cent, step mommy was able to buy herself a pack of Marlboros, and all of us had Taco Bell bean burritos for Christmas dinner. Best Christmas Ever!

Playa art grants?

so i'm working on my first 2010 Burning Man art grant. And yes, I know, the chances of me getting the grant are slim but I've gotta have a little faith. Anyone out there ever gotten a grant from Burning Man for playa art? Would it help to mention my collective is a not for profit? If I am so lucky when do the payment installments start. Tons of questions. Anyone out there????

Advice on applying for an art grant from someone who got one

I spent some time writing this up for the NYC distribution list so I figured I'd cross-post for more to enjoy. Someone had asked for some advice to get a BMOrg art grant. Well, I received all the money I asked for in my grant for the Bike With 2 Brains (http://jasondoesitall.com/bikewith2brains) for Burning Man 2005. Here was my process last year:

1. On the grant application page (http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_guidelines.html), they ask you to answer specific questions ("Your proposal must include the following:"). Set them up as headings in your application.

2. Fill out everything honestly and completely. This is a business proposal, not a stylish resume. However, it's also Burning Man, so be creative. For instance, this is how I introduced the section about "Pertinence to the 2005 Theme:" "Very few art projects can completely capture the Burning Man theme. For 2005, the theme of 'Psyche: the Conscious, the Subconscious and the Unconscious' is tangentially related to 'The Bike With 2 Brains.' To demonstrate this, I will attempt to use the theme terms in context as
much as I can in the following paragraphs."

3. Explain your project like you know it in your head -- don't try to "save a surprise" for the grant staff to witness it. That is, if your project's scale is designed to instill fear in the viewer because it is important that their emotional state is tense when they enter, then say just that. Don't guard the underlying ideas or how you think it will affect people and why.

3. Create and supply scale architectural drawings. Use CAD software if you have to (I used CADintosh from Lemke Software, GmbH at http://www.lemkesoft.de; it's a $30 CAD package for the Mac.) Prove that you have thought through the structure and how it will survive in the Playa environment (i.e. wind, rain, yahoos, no-MOOP, clean-up.)

4. Figure out your budget. Use real prices and cite your sources. "$500 for lumber" is bad, "644 ft 2x4 material at $2.50/12ft x 54 boards + 1 board scrap = $137.50 from Home Depot" is better. Avoid rounding off. Avoid starting from some arbitrary number and working backwards -- if they figure out you're trying to trick them, you get $0. If you're going to have to buy stuff new, price it out at _average_ market price -- sometimes you'll get a great deal, and sometimes you'll have to suck-it-up and pay more. I got soaked on the paint job which cost ten times more than what I expected because I didn't get an estimate beforehand.

5. Note your contingencies. What if your first-choice for transportation falls through? Will you be bringing your own welder and generator to make repairs?

I think it helped me a lot that I used a large amount of recycled materials. Half the items on my budget are $0 because I either already had the items or I planned to get them from scrap/garbage. In addition to a well thought-out artistic statement, I think the grant team appreciates innovation as well -- using alternative energy sources is good, even if you note that you'll fall back to conventional sources if it's not viable.

In general, more detail is better. If you make it look like your project is already underway -- that you've done enough research, you're creating models and mock-ups, and you can answer specific questions about how you're going to finish -- your chances are way better. If you have a pie-in-the-sky idea that you need $50,000 for and you've got no idea how to complete it, your chances are worse.

Psychopomping and Howler
By Kathie Wallace

I have been reluctant to share this information because it is sacred. I feel moved to speak about it at this time partly in light of what happened with Howler leaving this world this past summer.

In 1989, a phone call informed me that the only real ally I had had in my family was dying. I was devastated. I immediately booked a flight back to Ontario to be with my cousin, Bronwen Wallace. In making my plans to go, and at a time in my life when I was not at all spiritual, I realized that I was somehow “altered” and being guided to do “strange” things. I accepted the guidance. I went to a crystal store and bought a double-headed amethyst crystal; I found a particular poem and copied out two lines to take with me; I packed a bell and a very sacred picture of mine; and I took a mauve scarf even though I never wear scarves.

When I saw Bronwen, her pain was so unbearable I could only be with her a very few minutes. I showed her the picture and she said, “Yes, that is where I am going.” I asked her to keep it but she refused. She kept the crystal. The other rituals I was moved to do I had to perform with her partner as she couldn’t see me any longer. So I put on the scarf and rang the bell several times, read the lines of poetry, and flew back home to Calgary. I had told Bronwen I would fly back to see her again. She died a few days later before I could return.

Several years later I received a package from her partner with a note,”This doesn’t belong with me.” It was the crystal Bronwen had kept with her. It had transformed. The solid violet colour and form had become a clearly visible, striated crystalline structure. Some sections appeared as clear quartz in colour and there was a rainbow in it. I “knew” that Bronwen had gone through the crystal to pass over to the other side.

About seven years after Bronwen had passed over, I was reading about shamanic practice and was electrified to read about psychopomping as the practice of helping others to the other side with the use of things like bells, rattles, drums, crystals, pictures and poetry.

Since then, I have helped several people pass over as well as a dearly beloved pet. I have never sought out the work.

Later, Bronwen came to me in a dream and asked me to help her mother pass over. I painted a picture, like Bronwen had showed me, focusing on the tops of a grove of trees which were in a closed circle with the sun pouring through them. After I gave it to her mother, she told me later that for the first time she was able to communicate with Bronwen through that painting.

I have also experienced people on the other side. Some of them, like Bronwen and my pet cat, pass over and become “one with all that is”. At Bronwen’s memorial, I heard her laughter in billions of pieces of all existence. Others, like my father and grandfather, remain unhealed and as toxic as they were here on Mother Earth. Much like the spectrum we all exist along here on Mother Earth, there is a spectrum of what appears on the other side.

When Howler passed, what I felt from him initially was sadness, greater wisdom, an understanding of what he had done and where he was, regret, resignation and…he is the same Howler. Being the Heyoka he is who gave himself permission to do and be anything he wanted, especially if it was outrageous and pushed our buttons, he appeared in a dream of mine and did something totally unacceptable.

The thing I want to share about Howler is that I could have helped him, like I have with many people, move out of his despair and sadness and he knew that. There was more than one opportunity for him to open to me and reach out for the help that he was looking for. But he never reached out. Perhaps his Heyoka contraire nature just couldn’t do it or perhaps his ego got in the way. Or perhaps Howler, with his huge mind, was meant to be on the other side to more effectively help us here on this side as we go through the most amazing transformation in the history of human existence. In the end, I don’t pretend to know.

About two days after the news went out that Howler had swum out to sea to drown, I was startled to see an internet video that came to me of a young child, completely costumed as a jester, dancing through a country setting. He was in every way energetically Howler the Heyoka. I took that as a sign that Howler will be coming back as that energy again on this planet. (The video has disappeared).

I do know this: In the face of the horror we are living on this planet at this time, I will ground into Mother Earth; I will connect with the whole universe that runs through us right here and now; and I will sing fierce self-love because our very lives depend on it. Yes to life! And yes! to the new world that we together here and now are dancing into existence. We are meant to be here. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

second time burner looking for art camp

I went to BM 2009 as my virgin burn with a small (no art theme or anything) and I decided right there and then that I would be attending every year for the rest of my life as I have never felt such energy and inspiration as I did there. I also would like to be a more participating member of the community.

As my job ended and I have enough to live on until the next burn I would like to join an art theme camp this year and help out. I'm normally in Amsterdam but I'm considering being in San Francisco for a few months before it all starts, or even earlier if I can find affordable accommodation. Currently I'm traveling in Argentina and have no destination after this place yet. I have computer and electrical engineering skills and and technical overall. Besides that I do a lot of photography. If anybody is looking for someone with a lot of time on his hands, let me know.

Love,

OK, here's my next report, and I didn't make this one up either. It is from reliable sources:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_q=Jonathan+Teplitzky&as_epq=Burning+Man

Jonathan Teplitzky (Gettin' Square; Better Than Sex) is directing the film Burning Man: "the reckless, romantic, irreverent and ultimately tear-jerkingly beautiful story of a father and son’s struggle to deal with the unimaginable."

OT: Mustang Ranch

Onetime Nevada Brothel Could Become Conservationists’ Oasis
By LESLIE KAUFMAN - NY Times

SPARKS, Nev. — Watching bulldozers pour crushed rocks to force the Truckee River into a more natural serpentine pattern, Mickey Hazelwood, project director for the Nature Conservancy, mused that like many acts of salvation, this one has its roots deep in sin.

For decades, this high-desert site eight miles east of Reno was best known as the home of the Mustang Ranch, the first licensed brothel in the United States. From thin to plump, dwarflike to Amazonian, women hired to suit a range of tastes would line up for inspection by clients in pink stucco buildings tucked into a cottonwood grove 300 yards from the river’s bank.

The brothel reopened a few miles downriver in 2006, after the land was confiscated by the Internal Revenue Service and the name and buildings were sold to the highest bidder. Working 12-hour shifts at their new complex, part of which was airlifted from the old site, the women still greet customers in knee socks, push-up bras and other intimate wear.

The old property, meanwhile, is undergoing a transformation. Workers are restoring it to floodplain, undoing the damage wrought when federal engineers straightened the Truckee River a half century ago.

For most of its recorded history, the Truckee meandered lazily 110 miles from mountainous Lake Tahoe through Reno, once a floodplain, to the great basin in Nevada. Dense forests grew at its banks, and 20-pound cutthroat trout swam its length.

But as rivers tend to do, the Truckee would flood. In Reno, where the population had been steadily growing since 1900, and passed 50,000 by 1950, the effects could be devastating.

So in the next decade, the Army Corps of Engineers moved to control flooding by straightening and widening the river. The unintended result was that the Truckee deepened in its own channel, and the entire water table dropped along its banks.

Within years, the lower Truckee lost a majority of its native plants as well as dependent birds and wildlife. Only ancient cottonwoods with deep roots survived. Invasive weeds took over, and the river became an eyesore.

More threatening to local residents, water quality declined.

Without the plants and with increased surface area, the river was also heating up. Its capacity to absorb treated waste water from the city declined and threatened to choke Reno’s growth.

As city officials grew worried, the Nature Conservancy began peddling an ambitious plan that included moving the river back to its old beds, exterminating invasive weeds and replanting forest and other native plants along the Truckee’s banks.

In 2000, the $20 million effort to restore an 8 ½-mile stretch of the river began. The old Mustang Ranch is the final piece; bulldozers arrived at the site this month to begin forcing this stretch of the river back into a path constructed to mimic its old curving pattern.

Legalized prostitution, as it turns out, has made this parcel particularly promising to conservationists because it essentially kept development at bay, improving the chances of restoring the flora and fauna.

“We joke that in Nevada that we only work on properties near brothels,” said Mr. Hazelwood of the conservancy. “They like their privacy — they stay concentrated instead of developing out so they can keep an eye on things. It works for us.”

For years the brothel was run by Joe Conforte, an ambitious cigar-smoking Sicilian who had already served time in prison. He bought the 420-acre Mustang Ranch site in 1967, and lobbied to make prostitution legal. Storey County obliged in 1971.

Built to resemble a prison, complete with guard towers, the Mustang Ranch was a gritty survivor. It endured an arson and the murder of a boxer, Oscar Bonavena. A movie set at the ranch, starring Joe Pesci as Mr. Conforte and Helen Mirren as his wife, Sally, was recently filmed and is scheduled for release next year.

The brothel also had to endure decades of soggy conditions.

Susan Austin, who runs the ranch nowadays at the new site, was a “working girl” back then and recalls that women would sometimes have to be rescued in the buckets of front-loader trucks when the river rose suddenly.

Mr. Conforte might have kept going except that in 1990, the I.R.S. charged him with tax evasion, and seized and sold off the ranch to pay his bills. He avoided prosecution by fleeing to South America.

The ranch resumed business, again turning a profit. But in 1998, the I.R.S. asserted that the new owners were fronts for Mr. Conforte, who Ms. Austin said was receiving cash in paper bags at a hideaway in Brazil.

After that, the Treasury Department was not eager to sell the land again. At the behest of conservationists, the land was transferred to the Bureau of Land Management for the reclamation project.

“People were skeptical at first,” Allen Biaggi, director of the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said of the project. “But we needed to deal with water quality. And now this provides a vision of what it can be. It can be about beauty and peace and recreation.”

The Treasury Department got some reimbursement by auctioning the ranch’s assets. Several paintings of naked women frolicking brought thousands of dollars each, Ms. Austin recalled. She and some partners passed on those, but bought the name and the main buildings and moved the largest upriver.

Mr. Biaggi said the nine-year Truckee project would be a model for restoring the similarly blighted Carson River 50 miles to the south.

For now, the Truckee’s new bed looks like nothing more than a barren dirt lot. But five miles downstream, the McCarran Ranch, the first piece of property to undergo restoration, offers a view of what the old Mustang site might look like in five years.

Young cottonwoods are sprouting along the bank, and native plants like Wood’s rose and river grasses are proliferating a few feet inland. Native birds including bald eagles have returned to fish.

The Mustang Ranch’s current complex is visible from the McCarran Ranch at its site on a hillside perch. The owners spent millions to refurbish the structures, adding Japanese- and Hawaiian-themed suites. A heart-shaped pool and hot tub grace a patio with a view of the river.

Ms. Austin, who presides as “Madame,” likes the new location. Not only does being on high ground mean that flooding is no longer a problem, but there is also a new piping system instead of the old septic drain field upriver, which leaked.

“Waste used to go into the river,” she said. “Not anymore.”

Winter is Here

Of course, this is a place where "winter" seems like a balmy day to those of you who live up north, or in the middle of the country. But the relentless rain, rrain, rain can get to you. But if it doesn't rain we get to worry about drought...

Of course, the rain can be a killer as well, especially in El Nino years--we're possibly having a "mild" El Nino this winter. I guess I'm going to have to learn new winter coping skills, even if it's just how to wear a rain slicker. At least I don't lose my umbrella as easily.

What does winter bring you?

OT: Tactical Nuclear Penguin!!

I heard on the radio recently that beer makers in Scotland are upset because a Scottish brewer has made a beer that has been entered in the Guinness book of world records as the world's strongest beer.

The name of the beer is:

**drumroll**

==============================

=TACTICAL NUCLEAR PENGUIN=

==============================

Which at 32% alchohol by volume would more correctly be called a whiskey rather than a beer.

Of course, it's recommended that you drink this beer from a shot glass, rather than a pint glass.

A warning on the label advises drinkers to take it in small servings: "and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance.
"In exactly the same manner that you would enjoy a fine whisky, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost."

BOOYAH!

Ticket Prices. Pretty cool. I think this is the same as last year.

Allow me to be the first to attempt to manifest a "gift ticket". I will make an offering to the Earth Mother in honor of the first light being who sends me such a gift.

Namaste, motherfuckers.

2010 TICKET PRICE STRUCTURE

I got this message from the placement crew this morning, what do you think?

NEW DATES FOR 2010, AND A NOTE ABOUT CAMP SIZE & INTERACTION

2009 was a seminal year for Burning Man Placement. We had the
challenge of more questionnaires filed than in 2008, but with less
reserved camping space for theme camps. So we needed to apply our
criteria more comprehensively, and in the end could not find space for
over 130 camps. We did our very best, but had very little time or
resources to examine appeals to our decisions.

We have debriefed on last year. We have reviewed the feedback from
participants. Specifically we have heard the complaint that has been
growing louder every year: announcing Placement on August 1st is a
huge obstacle to travel planning for the east coast and international
members of our community. To address this requires a new commitment
from both from the Placement volunteers and YOU:

o We are "churning cycles of invention and destruction" by
asking Theme Camps to meet the same, APRIL 29TH PLACEMENT
QUESTIONNAIRE DEADLINE to which our infrastructure departments are
held.

o Here's the benefit: This will allow us to commit to
announcing camp placement ONE MONTH EARLIER: BY EARLY JULY.

We would like to connect earlier still with those that are traveling
far distances and/or have significant infrastructure planning needs.
While the placement process HAS NOT become 'first come, first served',
the earlier the questionnaire is in, the better the chances of making
this happen.
Of course as always, we will remain ready and standing by to consult
with you on the inevitable succeeding tweaks to the original plans
submitted: some shifting of contents will always occur.

As project manager Sweetthang wrote back on July 15th of this year:

"...we seem to have more requests for larger camps, but the
interactivity has not grown. Larger camps that appear to be blossoming
bedroom communities that are simply adding space to accommodate more
campers, but no [additional] interactivity have become very difficult
for us to place."

On a purely practical basis, it is simpler to map more smaller camps
in our city.

The Placement team of volunteers have exponentially increased their
meeting schedule to facilitate a higher degree of collaboration with
theme camps. Our ears are open at placement@burningman.com. We have
evolved, and are ready to mid-wife the life you will bring to Black
Rock City 2010.

OT - Why Sexual promiscuity and drug use go hand in hand with Evolution and Atheism (Paganism)

Aldous Huxley was a British novelist who wrote Brave New World (1932), and was a grandson of ‘Darwin’s Bulldog’, T.H. Huxley. He was also the brother of the leading atheistic evolutionist Sir Julian Huxley and died the same day as Christian apologist C.S. Lewis and the assassination of JFK (22 Nov. 1963). Aldous Huxley made this frank admission about his anti-theistic motivation:

‘I had motive for not wanting the world to have a meaning; consequently assumed that it had none, and was able without any difficulty to find satisfying reasons for this assumption. The philosopher who finds no meaning in the world is not concerned exclusively with a problem in pure metaphysics, he is also concerned to prove that there is no valid reason why he personally should not do as he wants to do, or why his friends should not seize political power and govern in the way that they find most advantageous to themselves. … For myself, the philosophy of meaninglessness was essentially an instrument of liberation, sexual and political.’

Can Burners Tolerate Christians?

I'm not posting this to troll, I'm asking an honest question. Burning Man is a profound artistic and social experience, and one that I've happily participated in and intend to again in the future. Burners in general are some of the most tolerant people on the planet. However, I have noticed that they can be very antagonistic towards Christians.

Maybe its our expression of a desire to throw off the moral shackles of small minded fundamentalist christians, but when we start attacking christians verbally and even proselytizing atheism, we're really just shitting all over our ten principles.

Whether it was when some jackass on the playa wrote hate over the heart on my I *Heart* Jesus shirt a couple burns ago, or when at a party last night some holier than thou tried to un-ironically preach to everyone for 5 hours how there is no god, its pretty obnoxious when Burners display a distinct lack of understanding and tolerance for other people's spirituality.

I guess self-righteousness is a disgusting cologne on Burners and Christians alike...

*sniff*
*sniff*
*checks pits*
AW CRAP!

I know lots of the gypsy hippies frequenting the west coast festivals winter in Bali, which is where I am, designing my addition to the tribal fashion world.

I'm looking for a good party. Preferably psy-heavy dub-drum and bass-ish, but the key aspect is a group of awesome people, a great location and a decent soundsystem.

Let me know if you hear of anything!

Where would you live? (Off-topic but not inflammatory ;- )

Hey all-
partly out of idle curiosity on a cold gloomy monday, and partly out of less-idle curiosity spurred by questions arising as I look at my "retirement plan" (hah!), I've got a question for those who are inspired to answer it:

If you were looking to buy a piece of land (10-50 acres) with certain characteristics (below), where would you look?

* 4 seasons (preferably including reliable snow and access to backcountry or cross-country skiing within a reasonable distance)
* close to a good, functional "community"-- something like a mountain town, where there is a healthy local economy of people working with/for each other, and with a good representation of the "burner community" or burner-friendly with a high value on art, participation, tolerance, alternative/expansive worldviews, etc
* reasonable access to larger-scale transportation (highways, airports) but not necessarily "on the beaten path"
* ability to sustain agriculture, either for personal use (home garden) or something bigger (produce farming, orchard, vinyard, etc). This means good soil, water, climate.
* good value (dollar-wise)
* other qualities?

Although I'm not necessarily angling for this, leads and intros would be appreciated, too.

thanks!
Chris in SLC

The fine volunteers at Playa Info take great care of all the found
Decompression. A small sampling of images from each of these items
from 2009 are posted at the link below, with accompanying lost item
inventory numbers, as in "09-###-G".

Peruse the images. If not your personal images, maybe you'll spot
those belonging to a friend? The people who camped next door? Stranger
things have happened.

o Did you lose a camera?
o Did you lose just a camera card?
o Maybe a whole bag or backpack with a camera inside?

o The camera/card or bag inventory number
o A description of the make and model of the lost camera/
card, or bag.
o A description of other (non-posted) images from the same
source.

Hurry up: we end preceding-year found item return efforts when regular
tickets go on sale mid-January for the current year. Yes, that means
we're done with 2009 items on January 13th, 2010.
Don't have an itch for Santa Crawl. (I always called it "Naughty Santa" but no matter.)
I loved it when I found out that for centuries christmas included riotous and drunk mobs of peasants demanding drinks from the rich. None of this peace on earth stuff for them.

Dan Called Elaine a Whore! ~ Lawsuit time.

Dan, you called Elaine a Whore.

“No matter, I am sure the next burning man gathering will provide all of the whoring you need dear. “

And you stand by your view.

"I do claim to be blessed to have such an easy world view to defend."

Now Dan , I hope you have some real good scientific evidence in that bible of yours that she is, in fact, a whore,

whore [hawr]
n (plural whores) (insult)
1. an offensive term for a prostitute

because…. one of the parents on my swim team, (who conveniently is a Professor of Law), already said your statements against a known reputable figure in the Burningman community (Elaine), makes it very easy for her to file a lawsuit against you asking you be held liable for “slander” and “defamation of character” in her favor.

I bet there are more than a few burners here who would give a few bucks to pay for the filing charges.

With the recent judgments in favor of internet personality defenses, I’d say at least, Dan can be sued for a tidy sum.

I will be forwarding Elaine all the information she needs and I am sure she will get plenty of advice and support from the other members of this tribe.

Insulting the members of a atheist hippy tribe,…………… one weeks worth of post.
Being sued for it,……….. 100, 000,000 dollars.
The smile on fucko’s face when he read it in the paper…….priceless.

Oxoxo
Fucko

Friendster was the first social network I ever joined. Followed quickly by Tribe and MySpace. As I recall it was even more ridonkulously tiresome than Tribe to load a page. Also, they had a real issue with avatars and alternate profiles. Now it seems it has been bought by some Asian company. Wondering if it's time to kill this account since I can't remember the last time I logged in. Also wondering if it's time to kill my MySpace account. Any opinions out there?

OFF TOPIC~ 150 Years of Evolution

But since is has been a theme for Burningman, suck it.

Today marks 150 years since the Publication of the “Origin of Species” by Charles Darwin. The preamble work that launched for biologist and the rest of the world a field of understanding about life on Earth.

And it strikes me odd that even one hundred fifty years later, science minded people are still suffering the illogical arguments of religious people.

What is called a “theory” of Evolution is not. It has not been theory since Darwin’s days. Biologist have no questions that evolution is, only how it happens. In order to realize that things changes over time one need only look at our fossil records which at this point are unarguably very discriptive of species change over time. But it is the how and why things change they way they do that has given rise to ever expanding research that has built the theory of Evolution into the giant fact it is today. In order to say that evolution occurs by magic, one has to overlook: DNA analysis, comparative anatomy, the fossil record and molecular biology evidences that rivals only our ideas about the basics of the solar system. Evolution is fact, not theory.

Yet, as Darwin clearly understood at the time of publication, Origin of Species would challenge religious notions, not only of a 6,000-year-old world and a literal acceptance of Genesis, but about ideas of human exceptionalism. Literally prevoking the argument: If man evolved from apes, how could we have been made in God’s image?

For literalist of the Bible, Evolution has to be seen as the enemy of God.

Thankfully, there are enough smart people in the world who recognize wisdom when they see it and Evolution has been hailed as thee, if not one of the Single Greatest Idea Ever. Right up there with Quantum mechanics, Astro physics and the realization of soap.

But still, logic has it’s enemies. Religious fundamentalists have been fighting the notion of evolution with new and sneaky tactics. They tried to disguise their contempt for Evolution by disguising creationism(a biblical explanation of the universe) with “Intelligent Design”. In doing so, they suggest that evolution is only one explanation for the diversity of life and that this same diversity could also be divinely manifested.

Without getting into a giant explanation as to why these creationist ignored mountains of hard evidence, suffice it to say this idea is equal to the world existing on a plate that rest on the back of a giant space turtle which, by the way, was a genuine idea some time ago.

Then these “intelligent design" people got smarter. Not smart enough to realize they were arguing a stupid point, but smart enough to argue better. They realized they could boost their position by simply imposing a mandatory “choice”. If they pressed for “alternative theories” to life beyond Evolution are held as equals, then by extension Evolution must not be that strong of a theory. Surly, who could argue with more choices? Well, a lot of people actually. A lot of people who understand that Evolution is not a just a theory that was invented out of thin air to promote science but a genuine field of study is now, more than ever, beyond arguing.

But the religious fanatics know they way to win the hearts and minds of the people is through the children. They start their faith based logics early in life which makes it ten times harder to listen to reason if you are fearful of your soul. What do you think Sunday school is all about. "Catch'em young!" Some people think faith based teachings are child abuse, but we'll get to that another time.

Next month marks the four-year anniversary of the decision of Kitzmiller v. Dover, in which Judge John E. Jones determined that intelligent design was merely religion masquerading as a scientific conceit and therefore unconstitutional to teach in the public schools. A decision that has been defended in at least three different states and will no doubt be argued again sometime soon.

It is also the anniversary of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. A church that appeared on the horizon in response to demands that alternatives to Evolution be represented in school text. A man claiming he belonged to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster insisted that if creationism was represented in text books than his religious beliefs should also be included. His beliefs were that the world was created by a Giant Spaghetti Monster. When people attacked the validity of his church, hundreds of thousands of people quickly came to his defense and themselves also claimed to be part of this religion, letting the hammer fall on the head of the nail, for the creationist.

But still the creationist persist. Ever trying to find new ways of planting superstitious doubts in an unsuspecting public. These people quickly realized they could plant doubts if they kept referring to Evolution as a “theory”. Once again insinuating that Evolution was just an idea without any real facts or testable evidence. But once again ignoring the overwhelming data that have kept our sciences grounded in basic common sense for the last hundred and fifty years.

“Recently, last week, former Growing Pains child actor and born-again Christian Kirk Cameron, along with evangelist Ray Comfort, led a crusade at college campuses around the United States and Canada, distributing free altered copies of Origin of Species. Because Origin is in the public domain, Comfort was legally able to add to the book his own new 50-page introduction, in which he quotes from Mein Kampf in order to link Darwin to Adolf Hitler, accuses Darwin of being sexist, and argues falsely that there are no transitional fossils in the fossil record.”

The opposition to evolution has now resorted to outright lying. The campaign is filled with the abuses of the words “truth” and “evidence” and “intelligence”. They use these words to sound credible to people who have short attention spans and without the willingness to research their own facts. But still, they don’t have the scientific method to back them. A method that prevents real scientist form over stepping their findings. A method that has kept the Theory of Evolution ever expanding and changing as new evidence is included. Ironicly the Theory of Evolution has shown remarkable adaptation.

Opposition supporters use underhanded tactics because they need large numbers of people to push their beliefs on others. In faith, majority rule is powerful because to simple minded people, “If so many people believe it, it must have some credibility.” But science is not majority rule. Evolution is not real because so many scientist say so. It is real because that is where so much evidence points to. The truth of the matter is, science has never said there is no god. Only that if there is a god, then evolution is provably a part of whatever that god's plan is.

The underlying point remains the same. As a woman distributing Comfort’s altered copies of Origin last week explained to CNN, it was important to her because evolution “impacts a person’s eternal destiny.”

And that is the evidence. People argue evolution not because they fear science, but because they fear their own death. They want to live forever and many of them have sold their lives to a religion that has promised eternal life to them. So many of these people exist that whole companies spring from their midst. Want to know who is leading this Evolution opposition campaign?

Seattle-based Discovery Institute (chief champion) who have to date spent over a million dollars to push Intelligent Design into state controlled legislature. But all of this without a shred of evidence. To this day, there remains not one peer reviewed-scientific paper on the concept of intelligent design and no one has produced any research into its legitimacy.

You know who does has published and peer reviewed-scientific papers on study after study after study? You guessed it. Evolution.

Have a look and decide for yourself.

Inspirational Sex and Drug stories from Burners

I know we are not a community that promotes lawless behaviors and by no means do I wish to express that any of us represent the very large sober community at large, but.... and everybody has a big butt....

I also know that many of us have enhanced experiences that were positive.
As the late comedian/prophet Bill Hicks Once said " I've had some great times on drugs"
And I think it helps us all to here the “truth”.

And I do not mean to demean the very serious problems that many of us have faced with many negative drug issues with everything from overdoses, self and other destructive behaviors and the cultural ramifications of medicines both legal and illegal in our world. However, I do know for a fact that many people live long and healthy lives with many positive effects of some far out chemicals on occasion.

In our camp , we practice some suggestions that have proved over the past twenty years, very helpful.
Like the “Zen of one drug at a time” and “ Only for enhancement of the now, never for escaping it.”

Here is my drug story, (that may or may not be true :)

In 2004 my new Girlfriend wanted to go to Burningman. So I said, "awesome". So we went with my best friend and we all had a great time. Not being steady drug users, we decided that we would drop E on Burn night. Since we had already had such a great week together, we were eager to try to fuck on e. We have a nice cozy 30 di parachute with pillows and stuff and it was not a particular dusty year. Things were plush and smooth. After the Man fell, we dropped and starting heading back to camp. I had been told that the way to fuck on E was to start fucking before you hit, so that your erection might maintain. But trying to get an erection (no matter how wonderful you feel) after you started rolling was hit or miss. So by the time we got back to camp we set the space up with all our sex toys and lube and towels and started making out right away.
Soon we were all 69 and hands all over the place and you know the deal. We started to fuck and that’s just about the time I started to hit. I think she started in the middle of the foreplay. It was incredible! We fucked and sucked for hours in all kinds of crazy fun positions just rolling a giggles and just awesome intamacy. hse sucked me off the first time I came and then I came on her belly the second time. By the third time I felt confident that after two giant ejaculations, a week of fucking and heat and drugs that cumming inside her would not result in a baby. I told her I was about to cum and she uttered the majic words, " don;t pull out ". Talk about mind melting orgasm. I felt like I had been hit by a bliss grenade. she is a squirter and we were coevered in wet and sweat and lube and dust and awesome tingly. we packed up and went home just blissfully satiated. We returned to useing condoms after that and all that jazz.

My oldest son was conceived on that night, on the playa. He is completely healthy and happy, has an above average IQ and recently constructed a working electronic dice spinner from a pie tin hopes to return to Burningman for his Forth time (we skipped a few years) so he can build a ginat trian track that kids can make their own kinds of trains to run on the rails with.

My other two children were conceived without the use of enhancements ,(excepting the astroglide) and the Wife and I still enjoy the occasional E fuck night (when we dare miss out on what little sleep we already miss out on).

Not only did we have a great night of sex and drugs, we have one of the greatest loves of our lives with it , a family.

Your turn.

Ban people from Burning man

All this talk about humans and activities is a perfect example of why people I don't like should never be allowed at Burning Man.
All the theme camps I don't like ruined Burning Man. And don't get me started on the so called "villages".
People keep doing things I wouldn't do and then complain how previous years were better than this one.
I wouldn’t miss anything if kids under 18, the rave camps, heebeegeebee healers, anyone wearing fun fur, those freaks that run the human carcass wash, the hotel ashram galactica, anyone with a drum or "poi", eschelon village with their smarmy art, shit-cockers, the PlayaQ, those people with the 10,000 lightsaber giveaway, people who run around wearing nothing but have their bodies painted in strange colors, heavenly feet, thunderdome and the rude m-fs in DPW, David "Look at me, I can build a temple" Best, dance dance immolation, and anyone who camped in rows D or behind never returned.

Ban all the things that I don't do and have no interest in and you reduce population, ease exodus, and improve our carbon footprint (oh wait, I guess that was only relevant last year). Everyone needs to act like me, do the things that interest me, and not piss me off while I'm there.

Discuss.

Some Questions for the Burners out there

I'm doing a Stats project, and I need data on those Crazy Burners out there. Help out if you please =)

What is your gender?
1) Male
2) Female
3) No response

What was your age the last time you attended Burning Man?

How much money did you spend on the last Burn?

Are you planning to return "home" next year?

I really appriciate your help, and any data is better than no data.

Does anyone know if there are groups moving ahead with either of the following projects for 2010 Metropolis?

1. Basketball court. Park benches, lights, boom-boxes blasting tunes, the works.

2. Corner store. Airplane bottles of booze, beef-jerky, crappy toilet paper, off-brand popsicles, close to expired food, random guys hanging outside at all hours, etc.

If anyone knows anyone thinking about doing either installation, and are looking for help, please let me know.

I have a friend who lives in Germany. He happened to be in the states at the right time & got to join me for a regional here in FL. Needless to say he is hooked. I was hoping to find some burners in Germany for him to get in touch with about any goings on over there (he's in Hamburg) so he can get his fixes before he joins in at the big burn for the first time in 2010.
Thanks :)

(A tribute to 2009's BM Festival)

What is Evolution? By 365 Degrees, it became quite clear... that this is no ordinary love pulsing those marbling rainbow lasers onwardly into infinity while costumed cartoon cars with waves of folks circling like the space around us, expanding in so such a manor as to invent it's own language & echoing choirs that sang the future into place. On the horizon is an ocean of warriors, and yet the battle was already One in the first place. This here is victory... This is Paradise and we are the treasure at that place just over yonder where everybody writes their own map and communicates a buffet of love.

This is Utopia at it's finest...

This, my friends, is That!

Thank you Black Rock City, I love you!!!!

I found the www.lightsaberdonation.org website, and sent dude an email, but haven't heard anything back. He only lists a retailer in Hong Kong as his supplier.

I shot 5,000 photos this year on the playa, so perhaps you can understand why it took me until Thanksgiving to get them processed and culled down to my favorite 136 images to put online. You can see them at my website here:

OT Fatigue....

Personally, I’m really tired of all this “OT” heading bullshit. My view is if a member of this forum, burner or potential burner expresses themselves here, then it is ON TOPIC. There may be inappropriate postings such as spam (anyone selling something), Trolls or abusive or threatening posts. Do we really need OT? The subject header almost always is an accurate indicator of what is in the body.

Obviously, this is my opinion. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way. This tribe has gotten a bit too PC for my tastes. Not very reflective of the variety of interactions one experiences in the Burning Man community, on or off playa.

Oceanic Acidification

Excerpt from ‘Ocean Reflux’ Discover July 2008 issue article by Kathleen McAuliffe

An analysis of CO2 preserved in ice cores shows that for more than 600,000 years
The ocean had a pH of approximately 8.2 (pH is the acidity of a solution measured
On a 14-point scale, with a pH below 7 being acidic and above 7, basic). But since
1800, the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the pH of the ocean has dropped
by 0.1 unit. That may not sound like much, but pH is a logarithmic scale, so the
decline in fact represents a whopping 30 percent in acidity. With the oceans now
absorbing manmade CO2 at a rate of 22 million tons a day and climbing, the
situation is certain to worsen rapidly. More than a dozen projections by the
International Panel on Climate Change indicate that ocean pH by the end of the
century could drop as low as 7.8, which would correspond to a 150 percent increase
in acidity since preindustrial times.

This basically is saying that the oceans are getting way too acidic.
Shelled cretures will find their shells dissolving.
Some aquatic creatures may asphyxiate due to CO2 overwhelming the O2 in
their blood. Stuff like that. There was a call for new threads.
I guess this is kinda too serious for burners. I'll spam it to some science tribes.
WTF, there are all sorts of other spammers that constantly puke up junk,
why shouldn't I?

Non-Event-Specific Rangers' discussion group

Although a non-event-specific ranger discussion group seems to exist, all indicators are that it's basically dead. Desiring to connect with other rangers to discuss rangery-type issues, I created a replacement. Membership is open to anyone.

Here is the URL for the group.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/burning_rangers/

This is a discussion list for Black Rock Rangers and their analogs (I know that not all events call 'em "rangers") at all burning-style events. As of the time of this group's creation, groups exist that are specific to each event, but there is no general, nation-wide (world-wide?) list for ranger discussion. This group is intended to fill that gap.

One thing that I hope this group will provide is a forum for people to recruit volunteers from outside of their region. For example, many people with ranger experience come to Alchemy (my home burn) from out of state, but they may not subscribe to the Alchemy mailing list. This group may provide a means to integrate the national ranger community outside of the regionals which rangers attend.

Another thing that I hope this group will provide is a wider forum for discussion of ranger-related issues, such as each individual burn's approach to rangering, incident reports that may be instructive to other rangers, and just general navel-gazing.

Hi All,
I was at Costco a few days ago and was pleased to discover that they were selling Burning Man shade shelters over in the home improvement section. For some reason, they were mislabeled as " 10' x 20' carports". I wasn't able to find any geodesic domes at Costco. Any ideas as to where I can find dome kits?
Best Regards,
Leo

2nd year burn and like last year I returned home feeling refreshed, loved, and full of positive energy. The default re-entry didn't even seem to phase my fabulous vibe this year. I know this year changed me in the most positive way for reasons I can't explain or even begin to give excuses for. I am now a true believe that the Playa does provide you what is needed even if you don't know what you need.
Lately I have had a fear of this greatness leaving and turning back into a negative turd once again. What can I do to escape the negs until the next burn?

Skipping class for Burning Man?

Hi all,

Sadly, I haven't been to Burning Man yet but I'm hoping to make next year my first.

To any of you who attend universities, how difficult is it to skip classes for the Burn? I may be attending SFSU and the fall semester begins around August 24th. The idea of missing the second week of class at a new school frightens me, but I figure there must be a lot of people who go to BM that do it. Is it difficult to make up the work when you get back? How do your teachers react to you skipping a whole week of class at the beginning of the semester? Have you ever been dropped from a class for doing so?

Any info on this would be much appreciated :)

Peace&Namaste,
Hana

Tix go on sale Jan.13th 2010

BUT

if you just can't wait and cash isn't an issue...................

DREAMS DO COME TRUE: TheSECOND ANNUAL TICKET PRE-SALE!

Back by popular demand, we are pleased to announce the triumphant
return of the Burning Man Ticket Pre-sale, in advance of the holidays,
for Burning Man 2010!

Last year we heard so much positive feedback from enthusiastic early-
planner types, those gifting tickets to friends and loved ones for the
holidays, and others who simply aren't so concerned with holding out
for the lower-priced tickets available on launch day and are happy
avoid the rush, that we decided to do the pre-sale again!

Here's how the pre-sale will work: we'll offer 1,000 tickets at $280
each (this will be the third tier ticket price for 2010; more details
on the full ticket launch will be posted on our web site on December
12). These tickets will be a special allotment and the quantity will
NOT come out of any of the pricing tiers for our regular ticket launch
on January 13. (And no, it won't affect your chances to try for any of
the first or second tier tickets when they're available, but it WILL
prevent you from qualifying for either our Low Income or Scholarship
tickets.)

Pre-sale tickets will be available online beginning Friday, 11/20/09
at 10:00am PST.

Tickets will stay on sale until 11:59pm PST December 30 OR the
allotment of 1000 presale tickets run out, whichever comes first.

For all the nitty gritty details (and this is where you'll ultimately
buy your tickets, too), please visit:

The Black Rock Arts Foundation supports interactive art projects worldwide, year-round. In our eight years of collaborating with innovative artists, visionaries and community groups, we've seen first hand how interactive art can inspire civic engagement and social participation. In 2009 we awarded more money in grants than ever before and to more recipients. We supported projects like Cardboardia (cardboardia.info), a temporary role-playing town made of cardboard in Moscow, Russia, and Celtic Forest, by esteemed Burning Man Artist Laura Kimpton, in Reno, Nevada.

The work we support is diverse, innovative, impressive and inspiring, but all share a common goal: to include the community in the creation of a project that exists for and belongs to the public - a project that provokes immediate action, that connects with both individuals and the community at large.

Come celebrate our achievements as a community, and support the proliferation of interactive art!
Veterens are just one small part of this radically inclusive thing we call Burningman; but, to me... an important one.

OT: sourcing black light bulbs in SF Bay Area

...figured y'all are the folks to ask.
I am looking for a T8 48" fluorescent black light tube bulb. Several, actually. I need them asap. Not little teensy black lights or single bulbs, but giant tubes. A series of tubes, if you will.

any ideas?

What Did You Learn at the Burn?

I've been kicking around this idea anyway, but the cupcake thread really made me want to articulate this. "We" (and I hope we can escape the whole "what is 'we'" conversation by stipulating that it's not a precise term in this context) put a lot of time, effort, and money into the burn. Are we changed by it? I'd argue yes, although I admit it's possible there's a whole lot of interpretation of the word "changed." I do find myself telling myself "radical self-reliance" when I face some problems. And it does help me focus my thoughts.
So, have you learned anything at the burn? Something that's not about universal brotherhood or some hazy thing like that, but something that's concrete?
Just curious.
