I just saw an article today in the NY Times magazine section about traveling long distances on the trains.

A couple were interviewed that met on the playa at Burning Man after being introduced by Chicken John.

I always get a kick out of discovering a reference to BM thrown into an article where I do not expect to see it. Sometimes I feel they do it to up the "hip" factor or in some way brag that they know the scene.

SOAK* 2013: The Oddity Emporium
July 18th to 21st, 2013 - Prindel Creek Farm

Welcome to a world of delights and marvels at The Odditorium! Come discover a gallery of magic in the forest, explore the theatre of peculiar fascinations, and wander amongst enchanted fires. The Oddity Emporium is a universe of the strange, a collection of unknown and lost artifacts, a place where dreams and curiosities meet, a place for friends and travelers alike! So come all ye strange beasts, revelers, and misfits of the world and gather together at Prindel Creek Farm July 18th-21st, 2013 to celebrate all the oddities of our known universe in this wonderfully wayward celebration we call SOAK*.

********************
: DETAILS :

SOAK* is a multi-day interactive arts festival and camping event in Oregon with lush meadows, creek for swimming, and wooded trails. This is a place to meet your fellow Portland Burners and get a taste of Burning Man Northwest style. SOAK* features participation, fire performances, art, DJs, live music, a pageant, theme camps, workshops, Friday night burn, and Saturday night main effigy burn.

********************
: LOCATION :

Prindel Creek Farm in Tidewater Oregon, offers two large open fields with adjacent paths and smaller campsites nestled in the forest near Tidewater, Oregon. Prindel Creek features a stage for music and performances, covered pavilion with benches for folks to gather, two public designated fire pits (open ground campfires are not permitted), and a freshwater creek with a small waterfall that runs along the site which will give people a place to cool off. Prindel Creek Farm is approximately 2.5 hours from Portland with pavement up to the main gate (this is the same event location as 2012).

Awards for art projects at SOAK* generally cover material goods only, and do not include labor, travel, housing or performance. Performance artist and troupes might consider applying for itemized material goods used in their craft (but not for performance, travel or housing). There is a strong preference for interactive arts and projects that might return to future events.

Therefore, as first act of our new, united Revolutionary front, I hereby change our name to Chicken's John League.

Now, I need recruits.

Do you have a grudge against the Burning Man Establishment?
I don't care if your wound is real or imagined, that's not why I'm here.
All I'm offering is Juvenile, pointless revenge.
The kind of Revolutionary Action that makes Police reports fun to read, and defense attorneys hard to find.

The focus of Our Collective Revolutionary Rage is the bank of Porta KKKans behind First Camp.
They are cleaned every day, they are in the shade, and they have locks on them.
They are there for the exclusive use of the Burning Man staff.

Your stinky brown rump vomit will never despoil the godly splendor of those Blue Temples, I can tell you that.
Is that fair?

These Sacred Crappers don't appear on any map, but they do exist.

I call for Self Aggrandizing Revolutionary Behavior!
The Padlocks they use are American dial locks, just like back in the reformatory.
I am repelled by, and do not advocate the use of bolt cutters and identical locks(American Lock part#22561k).
Nor do I think anyone should empty an entire tank of Nitrogen into one of the KKKans, rendering it a frozen solid chunk of plastic what will shatter at the first solid kick.

Those are disgusting, criminal behaviors that I want nothing to do with, and don't think anyone should do.
Unless you have simmering rage issues that need to be addressed in a vicious, really mean spirited way.
If that's the case, knock yourself out.
Just one warning: They keep the jail cells in Reno really cold. Be sure to wear your fur lined Guy Falks mask.
The ticket flyer that came in the mail today is very interesting…almost propagandistic, fascist –Spain, communist etc. I found it to be wonderful. But, had I never actually been to BM the flyer might have put me off a bit though; a sort of "FEAR"ful apprehension.

So let’s add another inspiring force:

The Graphic Art forms of Fascism, Communism, Socialism, and Anarchy

Being close cousins to Art Deco, I "HOPE”
that Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement might also be explored and reexamined alongside Art Deco, but I have a personal bias.

I think the Hope-and-Fear/Futurism theme is great given where BM is in it's lifespan, where we are as a nation, and where the world (humanity) is in history/development.

Looking forward to 2006!

Well, here we are, another new year and another chance to go to Burning Man!

On New Years Eve, my wife and I bailed on going out with some friends. We've cut back on going out to save some money especially on going out on New Years where it's not uncommon to pay double for a meal just because it's a "special night".

Anyway, I decided I was going to light a fire and spend a romantic evening at home with my wife. I grabbed (without looking) some matches from my top draw and was surprised to see that the matches I grabbed were custom made matches given to me at Burning Man!

A sign perhaps that this year I'll be going? I hope so!

The Burning Man community is known for creating extraordinary outcomes in the most unlikely places, and with your participation, we are about to do it again in Haiti. With the launch of Burners Without Borders new artist in residency program, we have an opportunity to put our community's principles into action and significantly transform the lives of artists whose voices have been historically excluded-until now.

BWB has partnered with the wildly successful arts organization, Jakmel Ekspresyon, to create a first of its kind arts program in Jacmel. The goal? To enable marginalized artists, including women, the physically challenged,
and those who identify as gay to become financially self-reliant. How? By empowering these artists to learn the skills necessary in design, screen printing and business to eventually earn income from their talents.

We have just two weeks remaining in our Indiegogo Campaign to raise the $10K necessary to build a
screen printing studio and to take artists from our community to Jacmel to share their skills. http://www.indiegogo.com/BWB-Jakmel/x/1865699

BWB is asking for help from this art loving community to support the success of this program that will provide a sustainable income for artists who would not otherwise have the opportunity to express themselves and financially benefit from their work.

You can support the creation of a new model for radical inclusion in the arts in Haiti. Please click on the following link to learn more and to donate to this project.

Not sure if you have heard this, but one of the small stars of Burning Man has passed from this mortal coil.

Last Saturday, Paul Addis kacked himself.

He stepped in front of a BART train, and instantly transformed into a greasy strip, about 100 yards long.

His family will save lots of money on his coffin, in that he will only need a very small one.

According to the reports, he could probably be stuffed into a Altoids tin, and you don't even have to take the used cigarette butts out.

That would be a very Burning Man final resting place.

Please don't get me wrong.

I have sympathy for the kind of pain that could drive someone to such a sticky end.
Life is sometimes very hard, and the hurtles overwhelming.
If he is at peace now, that's a fine thing.

However, I truly feel for the people who received the full wrath of his final performance.
The death of a child is one of the worst and most complete kind of pain that anyone can suffer.
I pray that his mother can find some solace in his sudden departure.

The train driver now has Paul's face permanently burned into his memory.
Killing people always affects those who get to do it.
That driver just wanted to finish his shift, and go home.
Now, I'm sure that he is off to therapy for quite some time.
He will be seeing that moment for the rest of his life, and it will always be just as sharp and clear as it was when it happened.
He now has emotional baggage to carry, and this suitcase is a heavy one.

It's sad to see Paul go in such a miserable way, but on the bright side, he finally preformed a one act play that no one will forget.

I couldn't stop the suicide on the Playa last year by a Colorado Burner I knew because I didn't know he was in pain.
Maybe thats the problem.
I recently shared a few very personal details of my life in a Blog and a few, who I really don't know that well, ripped me a new asshole by diagnosing me from their perspective.
It totally chilled any 'shares' I wanted to make in the future.
So, fuck Y'all.
I'm posting here instead of a Blog because I'm tired of the bullshit and hypocrisy.
Boot me off of Tribe. I don't care.
If ONE of you shows compassion, or reaches out, or drives by a friends house, or calls someone you haven't talked to today...it's worth it. To 'put it out there', to be open, honest, and vulnerable.

This Thread will self destruct in 24 hours.
Think about it.
Do the right thing.
Try.

Recently Face8ook made a 8unch of changes again. Amongst other distracting new features, the a8ility to post anything to a group has 8ecome virtually o8solete. I'd 8e interested to find out why Facebook, who had suddenly recruited people of all sects to join their movement, causing all other social networks to crumble in a short time, has now made it impossi8le to get the audience of any current social affiliation in America. 8y way of what's now our only social network?

Lucky we can still "like" groups on Face8ook, seeing as we no longer join them. Too 8ad for us though, the comments section in existing groups has suddenly 8ecome a tiny 8ox, rather than a wide screen of posts 8y mem8ers, as formerly seen on Face8ook and most other social network to date. Not to mention, I can't find many of the groups I “like” anywhere on my page, can't find the icon I generally use to get easily 8ack on site.
Some people use a regular person page for their group, perhaps because that’s how it was done when everyone first joined facebook a couple of years ago. Some may be using a person page because they are aware it allows people to post regularly on the page. 8ut who wants to sit around inviting everyone you can find with specific similar interests to “friend” you. In the case of an important occurrence, or anything people might 8e interested in hearing, you may want to get in touch with a group. Sometimes I like to notify people a8out what's going on. They have the right to know.

A while back I posted a simple question in the tiny 8ox Face8ook provides for "comments" on my favorite interest group, Pure8hakti Face8ook, which I “like”. Pure8hakti was all our sanga has left in terms of social networks. We used to have a whole site to ourselves, Sanga Space, 8efore Face8ook scooped our group up. Pure8hakti had already collected 9,351 “likes”, 8ut not one person had responded to my question 24 hours later. I could have guessed, 8y the look of the “comments” section provided, my post wouldn't 8e noticed. And who checks their "like" groups daily anyway? Not only does Face8ook fail to notify users of current group posts, 8ut they fail to provide icons or listings of favorite groups. I can't find Pure8hakti anywhere on my pages. .I had to we8search in order to return to Pure8hakti on Facebook. I guess I didn't join that group at all.

Who doesn't want us to communicate anymore and why? Seems suspicious to me. Now that we're all ensnared, they're fazing out groups? If I need to reach a group of people or 2 in order to inform you a8out what's going on, I can't anymore. That possi8ility has 8een erased from my life. We already know the mass media won't inform us. I can reach my friends only, and of course there is a limit to how many friends one can accumulate on Face8ook network. Why are they limiting the number of people I can have for an audience? Is it for the same reason that none of our stories get aired on prime time news, no matter how many people are involved or how important the happening? What is there some type of law that only scary and violent depressing stories can be communicated to the public. If so, let’s not let them take over the internet too. As soon as I start inviting acquaintances from groups I’m affiliated with, immediately warnings start popping up that I better really know those friends. I’ve also gotten banned from sending friend requests, which means I can’t send requests for 7 days. I don’t know why they did it. I have under 250 friends. If they want us to think people don’t like having acquaintances on our lists, then why do the majority of people accumulate thousands? Also, On other sites we can edit our posts, as well as comments. It's nice because sometimes you might be in a rush to post something in order to stay current with the conversation, and something you said wasn't clear enough. If they are making millions, they might improve our ability to communicate.
Other similar problems I’ve noticed: I’m not allowed to delete comments from others on my own page, would have to erase the whole post to take off a slanderous comment. I can’t add a message with a friend request. Also, why is it so hard to get back to the newsfeed from other pages? Is there a button for this? I think it’s strange that I cannot share a link to a thread. On other sites, you click on a link and end up with a page with URL you can send to someone. I’ve also been having a very hard time with facebook’s search engine. Is it just me or am I the only one who can’t find Spiritual Discussions on the search engine. Their search engine has always seemed erratic to me.

Please pass this along on Face8ook since it’s our only network anymore… before they make it 100% impossible to do so.

But, in this case, I am on to something. Sand snakes are everywhere.

If you don't know about them, sand snakes are small sand dunes that sometimes form on the lake bed.

As an historical puzzle, sand snakes only started to appear after Burning Man started infesting the playa.

Coincidence? or just our personal version of Global Warming. I'll ignore it, if you do.
Anyway, very dry conditions. So bad, there is serious discussion of making two extra roads out into the abyss.
40.82490010, -119.531916

By contrast, Burning Man takes place approximately 12 miles EAST of Gerlach in the Black Rock desert. This new festival is outside the exclusion zone for Burning Man set up by the BLM.

Or did they? I hear about a "closure and restriction" order during the week of the Burn, and am all ready to get pissed off at the BLM for being sleazy and squashing competition, but did they really do that? Skimming the report, what I see them saying is things like "no drugs, no drunk driving, no fireworks" - but does one have to have any of these things to have art or community?

Did the Smoke Creek organizers overreact and give up too easily, or did I miss something?

The Black Rock Beacon is tickled a rosy pink to be announcing our 8th year serving Black Rock City with crispy and chewy morsels of news, views, and totally tangential references to pork-related products.

We will be producing five issues during the week to entertain and inform the record population of our Burning burg. The paper is produced onsite, using decade-old computers and a press in the back of a van.

Beacon Burnalists have already begun to gather information for this year's papers but we are hungry for more. We have a long list of stories we would like to do, and we need writers to do them. There are also openings for editors, production people, illustrators, schwag-starved delivery folks, and if you're good at assembling Playatech furniture, we need some extra chairs.

If you know us and love us from past years, please consider making a donation to support our work. We would like to increase our press run; paper and ink are among our largest expenses, and the population keeps growing. We are also in the market for an approximately 40' by 20' tarp or similar shade structure, and we're willing to talk donation, rental, loan, or purchase.

No money? No time to volunteer? No problem. We exist to serve Black Rock City, we are happy if you read our paper. You can also drop by our camp just to say hi, we will be located in Center Camp, 1:15 the Inner Circle of Center Camp, right across from the Cafe. Our City Desk will operate all day and late into the night, you can come by and discuss the news of the day, what you would like to see in the paper, and whether fried or baked is the better approach.

If you want to join us, see our website at www.blackrockbeacon.org for information, shoot an email to questions@blackrockbeacon.org or come by for our daily team meeting at 10:30 a.m. at our camp. Donations can be made via PayPal or credit card on our website.

My dad is really wanting to go to Burningman next year after hearing me talk about it for so long. He is 67, able to experience rough conditions (he spent a month last year touring with a circus!) but....it is after all burningman, dusty, extreme heat/cold and such and that part Im not so sure about. I usually camp in a tent and just deal with being dusty and getting crap in my lungs, but I am concerned as to whether he can handle it or not and what suggestions/tips can be given for him. RVs dont appeal to him because it's pretty damn expensive and this is a one time experience for him, but not sure a tent would be enough protection from dust storms either...

Any suggestions you might have for housing? Any other tips that might be important for an older, first time burner to make his trip a good one?

The art installations blew my mind, and I can only imagine how they would look in person. I live in northern Indiana and I'm longing to connect with creative types.

Question: since I wear contacts, should I wear goggles to keep sand out of my eyes? Dorky-looking but functional, perhaps.

Question #2: is the event primarily for artists or are there book lovers there too? I'm a pulp fiction aficionado, retro pulp especially.

And probably 1/2 to 2/3's of other (larger) camps I'm on the mailings lists for did not get tickets either. While there are the same number of tickets out there, at this point in the year most campmates seem disinterested in putting any more effort into Burning Man 2012 without proof of a pay off for that effort. And so they are talking about alternate vacation plans (which honestly sound nice, Thailand, Europe, Puerto Vallarta).

While some camps will just lose wo/man power, other camps will lose the one or two people who actually make the camp happen. For a certain theme camps that are smaller than 10 people are probably considering themselves canceled if they don't want to continue making effort. I imagine that the result of this lottery is a year with less art, fewer theme camps, and a lot more orphaned people without theme camps to call home. So could this be the year that kills Burning Man? Speculation sought. Outrageous imaginings encouraged. Predictions made of nothing desired!

If you want to find out more you can do so here: http://blog.artasmoney.com/blog/transformoney-tree-burning-man-2012/

It will be worthless without your interaction - we will need thousands of banknotes, which will be glued onto the tree trunk. The banknotes will instantly lose their financial value, but will take on other values. So as weird as it may sound: we do want your banknotes, but don't need your money........ So to play with this even more, we started what I guess must be the world's first ever crowd funding campaign, which is not looking for money, but just for banknotes : http://www.indiegogo.com/transformoney

And we also love the fact that people started customizing those real physical banknotes and turning them into art ;-)

Being from an established theme camp with a good track record all around, this is a relief in that it increases the odds that our camp's leader and the rest of our camp that did not get tickets (25 out of 30) will stand a better chance--but it IS disturbing that the BMorg will be choosing who is "worthy" and who is not.

And, one thing I've noticed--MANY of our camp members have indicated they won't be going anyway--I believe a result of the first ticketing fumble--and we may be in the odd situation of actually recruiting people for our camp (beer doesn't pour itself). Given the scarcity of tickets, I'm wondering if we are short on staff and let people know we are looking for campmates--will we get inundated by people wanting to join us "just" so they can get a ticket?

An interesting year....

It seems a far more accurate description of the experience, then any documentary I've ever seen.
It also explains the weird stuff I see on Playa. Apparently a diet of cat food isn't as good for me as I thought.

Our final stop, before returning home, is at the 9/11 Memorial- but since this group is about multiculturalism I was hoping to find a cool ethnic restaurant (preferably with entertainment- bellydancing, traditional music, ect.) to take them to. It will be on a Saturday. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you never saw it, take my word for it, the Temple of Sorrow is the reason we have temples every year.

I'm betting that folks within the ORG are scouring the boards, Facebook, forums, letters, etc. for genuine workable fixes that maybe haven't been considered but might provide a spark for fixing (or improving) on what's obviously broken.

I was thinking about the old school hippies and other counter culture movements that tried to make their lives more like what they imagined they could be, and I wonder if we haven't come awfully close. I think it's the embracing of technology, information especially, combined with a DIY (self-reliance) and do-ocracy attitude that brought us as far as we've come. The event really is like none other, and while it won't survive, and never has, as it was, I am confident that it will again morph and evolve into something new, and something that will be worth attending and helping to build.

I need a DPW type to drive a giant fork lift to help raise it, other volunteers. Some compensation for the driver.

There will be a street party around this too. It will be the largest and heaviest sculpture ever installed in the City made famous by George Lucas. American Graffiti was shot near where the sign will be. Work for the Truth and the Truth will make you happy, or full of pizza and beer afterwards.
We are having to move from the Shipyard in Berkeley, and the Haul is in need of repair, and something a bit fresher than the 1940's forklift engine that powers it.
We have a new space in Vallejo that will be it's new home and a dedicated artspace for other projects. But these things cost $.

The business of Burning Man gets busy

The management of the Burning Man event is a complex undertaking which grew up over a period of time as the event gained in popularity. It involves on the one hand coordinating the many tasks related to construction and removal of the temporary installation of Black Rock City itself. Event organizers deal with BLM, law enforcement, emergency services, communications, gate and box office, a staff commissary, café and ice concessions, the Man installation with supporting structures, transportation and heavy equipment logistics, storage and fabrication, and more of this sort of infrastructure support. On the other hand, there are the tasks related to representing the event to the world at large, and to prepare and organize the various events encapsulated within the event. There are logistics specific to the event that take up all the rest of the year-- ticket sales management and fulfillment, theme camp placement, art support, regional event support, property management, vendor contracts, website management, and on and on.

The task of representing the event to the outside world is certainly difficult, since the event means different things to different people. Whether it's the ten principles, a newsletter, an interview with Larry Harvey, or a statement of the organization's position on some issue, the message has to be vetted to make sure that there is a consistent, accurate message. These communications serve to prepare participants for the experience, to let them know what to expect, and also try to explain what is going on to people who do not plan to attend. Believe it or not, there are people in the world who see fit to tell other people that they should not engage in an activity which they themselves find objectionable, where there is no demonstrable harm to anyone. Often communications are geared to defend the entire enterprise, including the individual contribution of participants, from ad hominem attack.

Burning Man invites people to inject their own value into the event, and then seeks to describe the net value. All of the efforts above create the “bottle” of the event, and efforts to define the event may work like the “recipe,” but the people who attend the event invariably alter the recipe to their own taste, the result being the “beer” which we all enjoy. When I talk about the event as a business, I am not talking about the flavor of the beer, or the accuracy of the recipe. I would not want to be misunderstood that I believe the organizers are only interested in the business aspects and rewards of the event. They are very interested in the flavor of the beer, and not only because they want to sell more beer, but also because they are beer aficionados. But if you drink a lager, and I drink a stout, and we argue about what the beer tastes like, it's just silly. And, to describe “beer” generically will always fall short of the experience of drinking beer.

People who get too drunk on the “beer” that is Burning Man should take heed of the classic alcoholic credo: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I have cynically said before that Burning Man tricks people into entertaining each other and takes a fee. It's a pretty neat trick-- a cornerstone of theater. It's suspense of disbelief, and the “trick” is willingly believed by the audience. Burning Man is improv theater in the round where the lines between entertainer and audience have been largely removed. Even the production crew, historically invisible “men behind the curtain,” have an opportunity to stand in the limelight. This creates unique issues about what reward people expect from their contribution, whether as an artist or a worker. These span the continuum from real professional expertise which is donated to coarse physical labor which is compensated, and vice versa. At this point in Burning Man's evolution, I think that if someone does not figure that out for themselves, they have no one to blame but themselves. I do warn people who get swept up in the thrill of that suspense of disbelief that reality is always at least a step away from the ideal. Don't put Burning Man up on a pedestal (oops, too late). Do the organizers exploit that tendency? Absolutely. You might call it pride or vanity, but it seems to be a world wide pandemic, much to the delight of mirror manufacturers. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Seek and ye shall find-- if injustice is what you seek, it will surround you. If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will deliver you; if you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you. There are simple solutions to these invented problems. Participation is not mandated, or mandatory, it is already completely within your control.

The business that is Burning Man was formed by having to deal with all of these issues. The right that the organizers have to decide what to do with the fee money is derived directly from their efforts to provide all the infrastructure that they are spending it on. They are the experts in spending that money, and if they abuse the privilege, they are the ones most sensitive to it. The suggestions to democratize the business of Burning Man are all ceiling-down approaches-- I would advocate enacting change from the floor-up. Chicken John and Jim Mason did that with their Borg2 project, and I admire them for it. C'mon! Blow my mind! Be the person who came up with the best theme camp ever (ever!). Start your own “regional event” and do it better! Or, if you feel that these things just feed the Burning Man cancer, go find a cure for cancer. Burning Man may change your world for a week, but it's up to you to change it for the other 51. Fixating too much on the minutiae of the event production squanders that opportunity. Take a deep breath and look at the big world outside.

People who end up with more tickets than then need have the option before the tickets are ever mailed, to sell them back to Burning Man. They get a refund.

Burning Man will take those tickets sold back and redistribute them to people who opt in to the STEP program. You must opt in, it is not automatic

This way tickets people don't want/need stay out of scalpers hands and people looking for tickets need not meet some stranger in a parking with hundreds of dollars in cash. The STEP program will operate up until physical tickets are mailed out this summer.
Then there is still the secondary sale in March with 10K tickets sold the old fashioned way, first come first served.

The Golden Age of Burning Man?

I think that all endeavors have a youthful spirit, then years later, after the kinks have been worked out, a maturity, a Golden Age, before "old age" sets in.

Not having the experience of BM before roads were put in, I can't say anything about the early years of BM. I'm sure that the early years must have been incredible and the idea of putting in roads probably pissed off a lot of people, but roads are better than being run over while you are sleeping in your tent in the middle of the night.

But having attended every year since 1999, I'd like to go out on a ledge here and say that the years between 1998 (I think that was the first year that roads were put in) and 2007 might have been the Golden Age of BM.

Here's why...

Population of BM was not that extreme.
Ticket prices were less than $200 if you bought early.
You could get a car or RV rental at a reasonable price.
Many of the features that we come to expect to be part of the experience have been worked out to a science.
BM was just beginning to be part of the larger world's consciousness so there were more participants and less spectators.
You could buy a ticket at the gate.

Now that BM has gotten onto the general public's radar I wonder how it's going to impact BM in the future. Last year we saw the sellout of tickets for the first time ever and this year we have the lottery. I wonder what the coming years will bring. I wonder if the Golden Age is coming or if the Golden Age is over.
