(this was my seventh.) well, whatever... truth of the matter is, i hadn't heard of lorin's music, but now own his cd and really love bassnectar and have booked him for our halloween party in vegas this year. but the point wasn't to dis lorin or even my friend, but, rather, the whole thing about the "most famous dj at burning man." i admit i'm clueless where electronic music is concerned. i don't know all the hip bay area djs and all the hip new styles that come down the pike. i go to the burn, i stumble around, sometimes altered, sometimes just playafied, and i seek out the cool freaky shit. sometimes it's music, sometimes it's not. the whole buzz around the dj line-ups was very pronounced this year and seems to be part of a growing trend... get to the hip camp at the hip hour for the hip set with the new sound and then hop on your bike and roll to the other end of the universe so as not to mix the next "not to be missed" set... quite silly to me in some respects, but, then again, if i heard that bowie was playing a set on one end of the playa and pete townshend was playing a set on the opposite end right after that, i'd have my bike in good working order and be at both sets fer sure... the djs add a lot to our experience out there, to be sure. and they have to put up with the dust as much as the rest of us... more, really, because they have to tweak with finnicky equipment in harsh desert conditions. so provided they aren't demanding that they have an army of knaves to remove their green m&ms, i guess it's just part of the whole experience. i just get a bit, uh, glossed over when i hear the sort of dj superstar cultism. and, fuck it, i'm also a hypocrite. i'll probably go to lorin's cd release party in brooklyn tomorrow 'cos i'm now totally digging his music and loving supporting him. The guy in front of me was getting claustrophic, and the next thing I know I hear a clamour behind me, and Perry is climbing over everyone to get through. More punk rock style than obnoxious trying to go first. All in good fun. I think he even helped the stuck person through. On another note, I once did get chewed out by Robert Redford after I asked his wife for her pass to get backstage at the bridge school concert. She was about to give it to me, when he came up and lectured us both. So far I think I like all my friends and the people I meet on the streets better than anyone in People Magazine. I'm with the Space Virgin camp, and we were having our party that night, so--like the starfucker I am--I handed him our dogtag swag invitation and he actually put it on. Didn't show up for the party, but it was nice of him to pretend he would. I felt bad in retrospect for breaking his temporary anonymity. My friends and I later discussed that BM probably is one of the best places for a wildly famous artist to come and mingle as an equal in a large community of unfamous artists. He didn't bring his art with him, but some of us know and love what he has put out--mostly the early stuff. So for a brief time he got to be a citizen among many artists. It's not like the Queen showed up, or Brad Pitt or something. On the playa, Dicky is more famous than all of them. My reaction: indifference.
