  • A tribe for "seasoned older" burners might be nice... Probably less drama... We just attended our second burn - ages 61 & 59 and are planning for number 3 next year. Figure there is no law that says "you can't have Social Security because you attended Burning Man" so we are going to have fun and embarass our adult kids now like they did us...
    • "A tribe for "seasoned older" burners might be nice.."

Sounds like a recipe.... Soylent Green anyone?

Reminds me of an Alfred Hitchcock story I once read about a guy who committed murder.

While the police were investigating the missing person, he fed them hamburgers and hot dogs.

When they were about to arrest him he told them that they "were all accessories" since they all helped him dispose of the body... the ground meat was the victim.

Upon hearing that they ate the guy they all proceeded to throw up.

The moral of the story was

"You can't keep a good man down".
      • OK maybe "seasoned older burners" wasn't a good choice but I was avoiding using the term OLD FARTS! Gosh - I love tribe...
        • SOBs, yeah, that's a good one.
          • "All euphemisms are awkward and grotesque bits of language. Or insufferably bland so they don't accidentally offend. "

            I love euphemisms!

But I never used them when it came to discussing my kid's body parts.

            My Mom though did.

She used to call my sister's vagina her "poop".

When I first I heard the expression " I'm all pooped out" I had a hard time understanding what it meant.

Another time, when I was reading a Superboy comic and Superboy made a big mistake... he said he "Pulled a boner".

I kept looking and looking at his red shorts and decided that if Superboy "pulled a boner" it wasn't very super.

well time for a little honesty on my part.

i really just want to hook up with someone with a cush rv.

the tent thing, well, kinda had it with that.

age really has nothing to do with it. i just want a place to hang my hat out of the elements. ah comfort.

so if your 18 and have the vehicle and want an old fart to tell you all about the " good 'ole daze"

(remember now, i saw janis, the dead, and jimi all on the same bill for $2.50)

i could be a mildly interesting traveling companion.
              • "i saw janis, the dead, and jimi all on the same bill for $2.50) "

I saw Taj Mahal, Sly and the Family Stone (booed off the stage) and Jimi in the same show at the Filmore East in 1969... I think i paid $5.00

Don't get me going about RV's.... camped near 3 of them... thought I would go crazy with the generators.
                • We ran our genny for a "total" of 1/2 hour all week...It can be done.

I just got an e-mail from a friend... he forwarded a list of thoughts from a 90 year old woman... here's part of what she wrote:

Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about..

If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.

When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.

Don't wait for a special occasion to do what you want to do. Today is special.

Over prepare, then go with the flow.

No one is in charge of your happiness but you.

Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?

                    Always choose life.

However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young.

On my profile I've posted my philosophy.... I guess they can be construed as "words of wisdom".

                        Please add to my list...

Rules for having a great relationship:
1- If you can't tell your lover about something you want to do... don't do it.
2- Don't go to bed angry.
3- If you have a fight, resolve it, don't repeat it and don't bring it up again... it's resolved.
4- Kiss hello when you meet and kiss goodbye when you depart.
5- Don't take your love for granted... hug every day.

                        About kids:
Have dinner with them as much as you can.
                        Get to know their friends.
Don't get crazy about what they look like or how they express themselves... pay attention to their core values: are they kind?
                        Support their passions.
                        Have fun with them.
Sometimes all you have to do is listen.
You can't have an argument if one person is calm.
Enjoy them.... they grow up fast.

"Roald Dahl wrote something similier about a leg of lamb."

One of my favorite Far Side cartoons shows a little shepherd girl sitting down with knife and fork in hand, the caption reads...

And that night Mary had a little lamb...

My fave Far Side cartoon shows a kid with soot all over his face & clothes in front of a blown-to-shit chemistry set, and the caption says:

"God as a kid tries to make a chicken in his room".

I don't have a favorite Far Side cartoon, but now I realize that I haven't looked at some Larson in far too long.

(He's a retired person with a far amount of disposable income. I don't go for the "Celebrities as Burners" stories, but I guess I'd be pleased to know he attends. I'm such a tool.)

my favorite Larson (but there are so many good ones!)
a dachsund dog standing on its hind legs on a stool, pouring a cup of coffee from a coffee maker. A chihuahua is sitting next to him, drinking coffee and reading the paper. The caption: "How nervous little dogs start their day"
  • There definitely was a "Tribe of Elders" camp in 2009. I met one of them (Leonard?) while I was working the greeter shift with Stag on Wednesday AM. He was 67 and in better physical shape than I (I'm 53). According to him, the youngest member was 60, the oldest 76 (as I recall) Their motto was, "We will listen to you".

Only 7 years to go and I'll get to hang w/them too.
    • love their motto.
      • I'm reading this thread with more than a little interest, turning the big 50 this year. Rob, I absolutely think the idea of the AARP (Anti-Aging Rebellious People) card is a winner!

I also love the 'We listen to you' motto. Geologists are sort of outside the norm, as there's so much to know, and we always say that the best paleontologists begin around age 70. I always make it a point to welcome any elder visiting geologist onto a drilling site, because of the experience factor. And some of their minds are soooooo sharp......it has to do with a lifetime of three-dimensional visualization put into the context of change. And they tend to be extremely dangerous in a good hand of five card stud.............

where is this 10.4% of our population?
    • Re: 10+

Don't take this kind of self-selected poll too seriously. But there is a segment (including myself) that just can't stop going out there.

The 10% figure may not be completely accurate, but since the city population has been at 20000 or more every year since 1999 having 4000-5000 people with 10 years or more is not all that unreasonable.

I haven't had a decent bowel movement, since somewhere in the Carter administration.
Does that qualify me as an elder?

Try using some resin on your hands... then follow all the way through with your movement so that your ball goes down the ally for a strike!

                              Practice makes perfect.

Often, after time in the boweling alley, I have sticky stuff all over my hands. Your telling me, that it is called resin?
Thank you. I didn't know that.
However, what your telling me, is that I should rub some of that goo on my hands, before I pump some "hot ones" down the alley?
O.K. I'll give it a try, however I'm not really sure how that will help.

Safety third as they say... keep your "hot ones" clear of the pump... you know that's where you have gas.
