Good point-- the content on the website needs to be overhauled some-- not as user-friendly as I'd like.

The "shopbrd.org" site is going to be moved to our main URL sometime by spring, I hope... in the meantime, I'll add some verbiage.

Know anyone who wants a lucrative career (giggle giggle) in non-profit volunteer coordination, out here on the perimeter of the known universe?

If you are a 501(c)(3), you should put that on the shopblackrockdesert.org website. From the website, it's not at all clear that you're a non-profit oraganization.

Well, I have had a few people ask what projects we have going on in the fall/winter, and the truth is, we don't have anything scheduled. We could go check out Guru Road (Dooby Lane) and see how our road work is holding up. We anticipate that potholes will form where we put down DG, and these will need to be filled in. We can also go and check out the Coyote Spring dunes to see whether any motorcycles have gone through our defenses.

Other than that, I could use some help winterizing our office, which is that 1920's era building across from the Saloon. It needs a bunch of weatherproofing, remove the AC and board up the hole, etc. Send me a regular message and let me know your plans--

The Gerlach High School used to have a radio station, and I definitely want to have them produce programming and learn technical skills. I've spoken with the engineer at KUNR, an NPR affiliate-- he was actually involved in the original radio project at the school years ago.

Certainly it will be open to the community-- I wonder if I can have people contribute music from their own personal collections, and perhaps be able to do some mobile broadcasting (live from Bev's on New Years Eve, for example).

Well, I'm guessing in the winter weather and road conditions might be important. Farm report? I don't know what's availble on other media there.
Probably some NPR, PRI stuff, they'd probably love Garrison Keilor if they don't have him already.
Maybe some locals would like to come in and play music.
High School sports and the like.
Maybe the high schoolers themselves would like to create content.

It's that time of year again, time for the Thanking and the Giving, Turkeys and Hams, Nog of Egg, and roasting by an open fire. It's also the time of year when people make philanthropic contributions to charitable organizations. Since Burning Man participants comprise the largest Black Rock Desert user group (except for maybe hunters), I hope you will consider making a donation to and becoming a member of the Friends of Black Rock High Rock.

The Friends of Black Rock High Rock is a member organization whose mission is to preserve the character of the Black Rock Desert region, protect it from damage and exploitation, and enhance visitor experiences. We do this through direct service volunteer projects, visitor contact, special events, and other programs. For a recap of our 2007 activities, go to the Friends of Black Rock tribe: http://tribes.tribe.net/blackrockdesert/thread/bdbe7e8e-e190-4172-8671-93229ee05337#33a657b4-638c-40ee-ae6f-f1ee8e435138 We are a 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations are tax-deductible.

In one of our more exciting developments, we have applied for a non-commercial educational FCC broadcast license for Gerlach, and we anticipate that our application will be accepted. We will partner with the BLM, Burning Man Information Radio, Nevada Outdoor School, Gerlach High School, Summit Lake Paiute Tribe, and other Black Rock groups to produce educational programming and provide weather advisories to travellers through the region. We do not yet know how we will fund this project, but necessity is the mother of invention.

I hope some of you will consider becoming a member of Friends of Black Rock -- it's only $25/year. Or next time you have a chunk of cash burning a hole in your philanthropic pocket, perhaps you will consider us. Or better yet, join us for one of our volunteer projects in 2008. Anyone who volunteers 8 hours or more will automatically become a member. You can stay informed by signing up for our newsletter: http://blackrockdesert.org/newsletter.php
