1. Nevada gas costs less and gets better mileage than California gas does so I plan on trying to only have enough California gas to make it to Boomtown or thereabouts and fill up with Nevada gas as soon as I can. Same goes for the trip back ... I will top off in Nevada just before the state line. California fuel pollutes less from evaporation but you burn more of it per mile so I am not really sure what the advantage is under heavier than normal load.

2. I am not going to carry a lot of liquid over the Sierras. I will buy my drinking water, beer, canned goods, ice, and other liquids in Sparks so I don't have to haul it over the mountains.

3. I will also purchase the generator gas in Nevada because you get more hours per gallon than with the California fuel. Avoid the "E85" fuel that is 15% alcohol. It has less energy per gallon and if your generator has a load-regulated throttle, you it will burn faster than regular gas.

I know a bit about this so I'll throw down a few things :)

1) Straight Waste Veggie Oil can be used, BUT it had better be strained really well, AND washed with water (heated up, and water bubbled through it repeatedly) to get the salt and etc out of it. That being said, you cannot run a diesel on it unless it is already hot (160F), so you have to have a special dual fuel tank setup to do this. Go to "greasecar.com" and check it out. They have lots of facts.

2) Straight virgin veggie oil. Can be used, but still needs to be hot before use. Same deal.. UNLESS you mix it 8:1 (down to 4:1 if it is really cold out) with gasoline. Then it works like a powerhouse and no need to heat it up. Test it out yourself with a small amount of fuel. The gasoline reacts with the fatty acids and glycerine so they are able to go aerosol in the injector, and you actually get -more- power out of the fuel. This is NOT well known, and I verified that this works with a farmer in Kansas. He grows sunflowers along side his regular crop, and powers all of his equipment this way all year, including all vehicles. He came to the 8:1 ratio through bench testing of fuel injectors. He discovered while using it he was getting much better fuel economy than with petro diesel.

3) Real Biodiesel. This is veggie oil (although you can do it with animal fat too) that has been "single esterized" which means the glycerine has been taken out of the oil so that it can be used straight in the tank. No need for any additives, except in cold climates. The only modification you would likely need to do is to make sure there are no natural rubber parts in the fuel system since pure biodiesel has pretty good solvent action. If you are switching over to it, make sure you check the fuel filters often for the first month.

My trip is going to be made mostly with Virgin Veggie Oil cut with gasoline. I can get bulk veg oil (50G drums of it) for less than diesel, and at 8:1 gasoline and better than 50MPG, it will cost very little to get out to BRC. I'll just carry my fuel with me :)

Maybe more people will start doing what people in the East coast do. They form a cooperative and pay to have their stuff shipped out in a shipping container. If more people did that in the SF Bay Area then they would be able to fill their cars with people. Might save a lot of fuel. Already most large camps have a communal truck to haul stuff, more effectient use of these coopeative truck arrangements might help.

How will rising gas prices affect your trip?

I'm worried for my own sake. Most gas is $4 or higher per gallon here in San Diego where we average around 50 cents above the national average anyway. It's quite likely to be over $5 a gallon come August.

It'll be even higher along the route to Burning Man with Lee Vining (near Mono Lake)expected to be the hands down high price leader. They've for years averaged around $2 per gallon higher than gas in San Diego ($2.50 in SD, $4.50 to $5 in Lee Vining).

Do you think it will impact you?
