How will rising gas prices affect your trip?

I'm worried for my own sake. Most gas is $4 or higher per gallon here in San Diego where we average around 50 cents above the national average anyway. It's quite likely to be over $5 a gallon come August.

It'll be even higher along the route to Burning Man with Lee Vining (near Mono Lake)expected to be the hands down high price leader. They've for years averaged around $2 per gallon higher than gas in San Diego ($2.50 in SD, $4.50 to $5 in Lee Vining).

Do you think it will impact you?

      psh.

your car gets almost twice the gas mileage mine does!

but, alas, that's the truth. pinch those pennies.

actually, i think i'm gonna start putting money a side for a BM gas fund. Sounds good...

I'm definitely going to look into the financial situation we'd need to be in for that kind of trip.
It would be so awesome if we could, though!

Also, keep the idea of volunteering for BM setup in mind, too.

As for your parents loving me, what can I say? I'm totally lovable.

Heard that regular was already $5.2? last week in Bridgeport. OUCH!
Diesel has been running tween $4.00 at Safeway and $4.29 at our local Texaco. (Sparks, Nirvana)
I lived in San Diego during the fuel crisis of 1979 when gas went over a buck and we used to drive to Tijuana to fill up and it was about half the price but heard from a few that it was much lower quality!!??

We might try and get someone to ride along with us in the van conversion this year. In other words, carpooling.

I would imagine there will be a lot more of that this year.
    • Re: How will rising gas prices affect your trip?

Car pooling is a great idea, except so many of us have no room left in our vehicle after the necessary gear. As for myself, everything I need fits in my car, but there is no room left for anything else.

Maybe more people will start doing what people in the East coast do. They form a cooperative and pay to have their stuff shipped out in a shipping container. If more people did that in the SF Bay Area then they would be able to fill their cars with people. Might save a lot of fuel. Already most large camps have a communal truck to haul stuff, more effectient use of these coopeative truck arrangements might help.

I suspect this will put a serious crimp on folks shipping stuff
long distances or driving cross country.

Expect a drop in attendance or at least level with last year.
Remember 2000? Not only did the weather drive folks
away, but the dot com bust as well.

Carpooling is a must for me. Gas round trip out from Atlanta is going to be ridiculously expensive. So if anyone knows people looking for a ride from Georgia let me know!

Hey, regular cars can run on used veggie oil without modifications. And it is almost the same mileage, maybe tiny percentage less. Go to your closest Mickey D's and ask them for the french-fry grease. It's free.

But there has been no study as to long term usage of veggie oil in your car. May cause damage, may not.

          "most regular cars"

Where did you get this info? Even diesel cars need modifications. www.dancingrabbit.org/biodies...fuel.php I used to work in auto parts and you'd be shocked to learn how little it takes to foul spark plugs and junk up fuel injectors. As for french fry oil being free, the MDs I worked at a hundred years ago sold the stuff, even back then. It was a corporate store, but most are privately owned franchises, so each store would be different.

I know a bit about this so I'll throw down a few things :)

            1) Straight Waste Veggie Oil can be used, BUT it had better be strained really well, AND washed with water (heated up, and water bubbled through it repeatedly) to get the salt and etc out of it. That being said, you cannot run a diesel on it unless it is already hot (160F), so you have to have a special dual fuel tank setup to do this. Go to "greasecar.com" and check it out. They have lots of facts.

            2) Straight virgin veggie oil. Can be used, but still needs to be hot before use. Same deal.. UNLESS you mix it 8:1 (down to 4:1 if it is really cold out) with gasoline. Then it works like a powerhouse and no need to heat it up. Test it out yourself with a small amount of fuel. The gasoline reacts with the fatty acids and glycerine so they are able to go aerosol in the injector, and you actually get -more- power out of the fuel. This is NOT well known, and I verified that this works with a farmer in Kansas. He grows sunflowers along side his regular crop, and powers all of his equipment this way all year, including all vehicles. He came to the 8:1 ratio through bench testing of fuel injectors. He discovered while using it he was getting much better fuel economy than with petro diesel.

            3) Real Biodiesel. This is veggie oil (although you can do it with animal fat too) that has been "single esterized" which means the glycerine has been taken out of the oil so that it can be used straight in the tank. No need for any additives, except in cold climates. The only modification you would likely need to do is to make sure there are no natural rubber parts in the fuel system since pure biodiesel has pretty good solvent action. If you are switching over to it, make sure you check the fuel filters often for the first month.

My trip is going to be made mostly with Virgin Veggie Oil cut with gasoline. I can get bulk veg oil (50G drums of it) for less than diesel, and at 8:1 gasoline and better than 50MPG, it will cost very little to get out to BRC. I'll just carry my fuel with me :)

One of the local NPR shows had a segment on a shop that does conversions on old Mercedes diesels over in Silverlake. I think it was there that some guy was talking about how he buys vegetable oil by the case from Costco and it was like a dollar a gallon.

The whole gas price thing if our fault as it began to rise right after we bought our first used RV in October... 9 mpg - so I will not shop for "goodies" as much and save for burning man.

It will make the trip more expensive. That's it. I've always managed to plan the trip into the ground and find that things change either just before I leave or once I get there. Every damn time. That may mean I'll decide to drive up with someone who will back out at the last minute or plan to drive alone and have someone I like need a ride at the last minute.

I've learned that there's only so much you can absolutely depend on happening. Gas costing an arm and a leg may be one of those few things.

I know that that the last three years I've been to BM that once I get there and park, I don't spend one cent... seriously, I have a propane fridge and make my own coffee... parking for 10 days without spending any money more than makes up for the increased gas price and what would spend if I were home.

Yeah Flack but what about not making any money those 10 days that you spend none? In my case I finding that not spending doesn't offset not making money. I depend on the event it'self for that : ).

Also, I may not be spending while on the playa but I sure did spend before I got there (food, party favours, water, gas, etc.).

"In my case I finding that not spending doesn't offset not making money. I depend on the event it'self for that : )."

To be clear, the enjoyment I get at the event tends to offset not making an income during that period : ).

Gotta be clear on this list.

I am making money while I'm there since I use paid vacation days. I know not everybody has that kind of job but a lot of people do. As a vacation, it is pretty cheap campared to the traditional vacation that generally includes driving to several locations, motels, restraunt food, etc., etc. I probably spend less on food at BM than during a week at home or regular car camping.... booze?, well, I probably spend more.

I thought W was sending us all checks in the next month or so to cover the cost of gas to BM? I heard Jenna and Barbara were coming this year to help realize the theme.

I think Ill ride my bike in this year. It's better and more symbolic then driveling in this year. We should get a critical mass of bikes riding to the playa together. It's also a great way to bypass exodus traffic.
Besides my american dream is to see everybody riding bikes.
    • < heard Jenna and Barbara were coming this year to help realize the theme.>

The american dream is making it with two unattractive republican twins? Wow.

Sorry, Sas, I think I've derailed your thread.

Gas prices will not affect my trip at all.
All I have to do is go down to the orphanage and pick up a couple more of those little buggers. Then I tell them they can’t eat until they sell a set number of fake magazines or Burning Man tickets. Its fast and easy money and all I have to feed them is a package of Top Ramon a day, it only cost me pennies. Plus it is helping the US economy. The more money Huelll has the more he has to spend on sex toys and gas for my RV so I can run my air conditioner, Large Screen and hot tub at Burning Man 24/7 even if I’m not there.

AHHH that’s America Dream. Don’t you just love it!!!!!

Interesting topic and one likely to be revisited in July and August! I wonder if there will be more than the usual number of already purchased tickets up for resale in a few months. But then again, high traveling expenses (as well as no ticket sales at the gate) might thin the crowd of at least a few of the "not-so-serious" attendees.
  • Coming from Colorado it might cost me a grand. Yes I'm coming in a 1975 RV (please don't hate me because it makes the trek much easier). BUT, the whole trip could be paid for by renting out my house for the DNC. What great timing: to get away from the craziness that will be here in Denver and hopefully will pay for my trip at the same time.
  • hmm....what about next year. and the year after that?

when gas is $10 a gallon. maybe this will reduce the number of people going to burning man, bring the population back to around 25,000.

do people actually think that gas will go down in price? really?
  • 1. Nevada gas costs less and gets better mileage than California gas does so I plan on trying to only have enough California gas to make it to Boomtown or thereabouts and fill up with Nevada gas as soon as I can. Same goes for the trip back ... I will top off in Nevada just before the state line. California fuel pollutes less from evaporation but you burn more of it per mile so I am not really sure what the advantage is under heavier than normal load.

    2. I am not going to carry a lot of liquid over the Sierras. I will buy my drinking water, beer, canned goods, ice, and other liquids in Sparks so I don't have to haul it over the mountains.

    3. I will also purchase the generator gas in Nevada because you get more hours per gallon than with the California fuel. Avoid the "E85" fuel that is 15% alcohol. It has less energy per gallon and if your generator has a load-regulated throttle, you it will burn faster than regular gas.
