This list was culled from eplaya.burningman.com thread I started. Thought it would be worth while to continue it here. Please add any of your own recommendations or comments on these films.
"Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" - just full of wonderful imagery
"Labyrinth" an "The Dark Crystal" - for the same reasons
"Mad Max" - the whole trilogy
"Fightclub" - infinitely quoteable
"Spirited Away" - what can I say, it was the best film I saw right after BM2002. Lots of parallels
"Dune" - Lynch's version is good, but go get the Sci-Fi Channel's version, especially the Directors Cut DVD. Also snag "Children of Dune". What? You haven't read the book!?!
"Amelie" - cute, fluffy, but with some great moments of creative gifting
"City of Lost Children" for visuals and surrealism
Priscilla Queen of the Desert"
mostly for the costumes. It makes me dream about riding across the playa full speed on top of a school bus with big flapping wings of golden fabric.
"Lawrence of Arabia"
"Straight to Hell,"directed by Alex Cox.After a botched robbery,a band of thieves head for the desert to take shelter, only to find that the wilderness hamlet into which they have stumbled is run buy a murderous, incestous, clan of coffee addicts who are struggling for control against a small band of misfits and a greedy land developer.Highlights include spontaneous song and dance numbers and camoes by Elvis Costello(as a coffee dispensing butler) and the Pogues(as three dead brained cabelleros).Starring cast includes Sy Richardson,Joe Strummer,Courteny Love,Grace Jones and Denis Hopper.Great Desert Fic!
"The Neverending Story"
"Six-String Samurai" Strange costumes, decent music (the Red Elvis'?), fight scenes, general strangeness.
"Shakes The Clown" How many clowns ARE there in BRC?
I will second a vote on the entire "Mad Max" Trilogy.
"Tank Girl" C'mon, they turn a tank and a jet into art cars!
"Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" Especially the Mint 500 motorcycle race.
"tank girl" is number one for me. I love that character's style and find myself mimicking it in my costumes and attitude.
"Siam Sunset" In the final third of the movie, a colorist (!) gets stranded in the desert with a bunch of wankers for a week. What they end up with by doing a lot with a little is very "burner" to me. Plus the main charecter is searching for the color 'siam sunset' because it is the color of peace. this seems like a quintessentially burn-y quest to me.
"from dusk till dawn"??? i swear that movie was inspired by the black rock city!
"A.I." - the demolition derby of robots scene - very BRC.
As well as the dance scene of Zion in "the Matrix: Reloaded"
I have been pushing "Wicker Man" down everybodys throat for about ayear on e-playa.I love Larry as Lord Sumerisle...
"A boy and his Dog". It's a post apocalyptic movie starring Don Johnson from years ago. Lots of desert stuff, and a large amount of innocense amisdt a really screwy backdrop.
'Holes" is a great flick, too. Looks like it was filmed on the playa, or somewhere nearby. Don't let the 'kid's movie' look of it fool you, it's really cool.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Not as much for the movie itself but the way people watch it in a theater. No one is a spectator you yell at the screen and interact with the other people there dess up and act out the movie. If you just watch the movie its no fun. Jut like burning man you get out what you put in. Plus a lot of the costumes could have come right off the playa.
"Phantom Tollbooth" - time is a gift given to you given to you to have the time to take the time to have the time of your life.
"The Muppet Movie" The lovely tale of an earnest young frog who knows there's something more out there than the tiny swamp he grew up in, and finds a host of crazy characters that become his family on the way. Extra points for featuring the first muppet art car, an evil fast food chain, Animal dosing himself to gigantism, and Crazy Harry blowing stuff up because it's fun. Plus, all the Muppets look like Burners I know.
"Mystery Men"! A whole lot of the basis of my camp is stolen directly from it. And it's hilarious.

Definitely the Matrix dance scene, and the costuming.

The director's cut of Blade Runner.

David Cronnenberg Anything- for that altered sense.
I saw some of the costumes created for David Lynch's Dune, when the film first came out, and they were SO detailed...very playa.
The Road Warrior, of course.

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Fri, January 16, 2004 - 1:33 PMA few weeks ago I saw a short animated film called "Destino." It was originally a collaboration between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney (1946) but never finished. It was recently completed by some Disney animators.
(Here's some info about it: www.wired.com/news/digiwo...385,00.html)
The film follows a figure of a woman in a desert landscape. I thought it was amazingly evocative of Burning Man. It's been playing as a short subject with a full-length animated movie called "The Triplets of Belleville." -

Fri, January 16, 2004 - 4:23 PM"Bad day at Black Rock" I know its a contradiction in terms but when you have lines in a movie like "Black Rock is the frendliest town in the west" its a classic.
"TRON" Actually I never liked this movie until I watched at the Bijou Theater in '99. Now it makes me completely homesick. -

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Thu, June 2, 2005 - 12:39 PMThe Bijou..... THAT was US.... did ya make it for Porn Night?
we had SRO every night.... and especially on porn night... LOL!! have to laugh thinkin about when the "cops" came by, told us that porn was illegal, we told them so is nudity, They left and didnt bother us after that...
one of the movies we showed that night was too "artsy-fartsy for some... so some of our Tribesters put on a live show.... we ended up shutting off movie in favor of the live action.....
yummy memories... we even made popcorn, and I still have my Bijou Vest that we wore to seat people......
Ya made me feel nostalgic, now I'll have to go find the pics of the place and upload them to my profile....
when we were setting up that structure we nearly blew away to Winnemucca... 85 mph wind hit... took EVERYONE in vicinity to hold that thing in place.....
Thanks Rev.... ya brought back some really nice memories...

Movies That Remind Me of Burning Man from the 1970s
Fri, January 16, 2004 - 9:52 PMVanishing Point (not the made-for-TV remake)
Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point , an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops.
Zabriskie Point
Antonioni's Zabriskie Point starred Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin, but the real star of Zabriskie Point is the desolate, parched-white landscape of Death Valley, in particular the vista from Zabriskie Point, the desert lookout that gives the movie its name and where the two main characters consummate their brief relationship in a hallucinatory sex scene. It is an eerie, skeletal expanse of stony ridges and dry stream beds, stunning in its ancient, unearthly emptiness. -

Re: Movies That Remind Me of Burning Man from the 1970s
Sat, December 24, 2005 - 11:50 PMAny movies that remind me of Burning Man have been mentioned already... Funny how when you are so engulfed with it, you mind just automatically plays a trick on you ("Hey that's like Burning Man!") but when you step aside from that mindstate you realize that that one scene in a Disney Movie you saw right after BM or a BM Gathering really wasn't like it at all... Also, many scenes in movies were indeed actually inspired by Burning Man (Matrix Reloaded Celebration Scene/The Beach)... So, I will list the two (already mentioned earlier) that remind me of Burning Man as I had to use the analogies to explain it to a friend of mine...
Star Wars - Tatooine, Mos Isley Cantina Scene
Aliens, crazy music, wierd looking vehicles and creatures, the sense that one can do what they wanna as long as nobody is hurt (and if they are, be quiet about it)...
Canivale - HBO Series
Now seriously, this is Burning Man circa the 1920... They set up in the middle of some drought laden plains, set up the freak show (term used endearingly), stay for a week, then move on...
Yup, sounds like Burning Man...

And i had to admit... "yeah... there are times like that..."

Wed, January 21, 2004 - 5:51 PMA lot of the car commercials on TV. They love to show them new cars zip zip accross the playa. I buy a new car every time I see an ad shot in the desert. Can't help myself.
There's that old rad odd movie that very much remided me of Burning Man. What was the name? Ya, add that one to the list also.

Thu, June 2, 2005 - 2:12 PMI saw a really bad movie from 1987 that had portions filmed out on the playa. It was called "Promised Land" and stars Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland. It was truelly terrible until I realized "Hey! That's the playa!" and then I got all nostalgic and happy for a good 5-10 minuts of the film. -

Thu, June 2, 2005 - 2:31 PMThe 10 Commandments, just for the scene where Moses is walking thru the desert in a sandstorm, and This Quiet Earth, because so few people are left, they have to band together for to survival and love, have to learn how to hook up generators and stuff, and realize they can wear pretty much whatever they want now, and oh- the scene where the guy who thinks he's all alone has set up cardboard people as his own private audience, and he gives speeches with a microphone and speakers, complete with canned applause.

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Thu, June 2, 2005 - 5:14 PMThe Wicker Man
That movie was a real favorite of mine long ago. In fact, friends came to me in the early 90's and told me about Burning Man simply because I raved about the movie so much. Sure, it's a bit dark - I don't actually support burning police officers inside the Man... but, hey it's art, right? -

Burning Man has this cool system of making Burning Man films available to local communities - I think it's called Burning Man in a box. They'll send your region whichever films you like, you hold a film festival. they've been doing it in SF and Santa Cruz for years. We did it in Portland last year. I've been collecting playa films for a while now. It's nice to have that reminder, on film, of what's out there. -

Re: Movies That Remind Me of Burningman
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 12:24 PMi cant believe that no one has mentioned the 80's new wave classic "liquid sky": sexy, androgynous, brightly colored, new wave punks partying like rock stars until they are killed by having sex with teensyweensy aliens who want their sex fluids.
pretty much sums up last year, for me anyway.
also german expressionist classic "the cabinet of dr. caligari", as well as the 80's new wave update "dr.caligari." the former has an aesthetic surrealism and style that is reminiscent of several camps/neighborhoods. the latter was directed by new wave porn auteur Rinse Dream (of "Cafe Flesh" fame), and blends visual sophistication with absurdist theatre and kinky sex. hard to find, yet VERY reminiscent of burning man.
while i am at it, i'll go ahead and plug "cafe flesh", while "dr caligari" is not a porn, "cafe flesh" is. (perhaps one of the coolest, definitely one of the strangest. )set in the future where only like 1 percent of the population can have sex, the ruling class puts the capable 1 percent on display like sexual gladiators, for their enjoyment or arousal. anyoned who has walked into the wrong dome at the right time, or witnessed the "canadian beaver eating contest" - may very well appreciate how this film incorporates graphic sex with a sci-fi neon 1980's flair. -

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 8:37 AMnot a movie but a music video: see if you can find a clip of the new Sean Paul - the original song is 'We Be Burning' but the lyrics have been completely changed (entire song was about drugs: 'legalize it, time to recognize it') -
part of it is in a sand desert but part of it is on 'gotta the be' the playa - the cracks in the ground and this nutty truck that shoots fire in the background (artcar inspired?)
SP likes to blaze and maybe he's also a burner? or at least someone on that production?

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Sun, December 25, 2005 - 12:28 AMDon't forget 12 Monkeys and The Fisher King. And Jabberwocky. Burning Man definitely has a little of the tits and gore, paper-mache monstrosities that Jabberwocky did so well. Really, if Terry Gilliam had a hand in it, chances are that it's influenced the mind of quite a few burners.
Brazil only reminds me of BM in that BM seems the exact opposite of that portrayed world.
Strangely enough, Highlander makes me think of BM...something to do with immortality I'm sure. Oh, and Groundhog Day, and The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth. "Dance, magic dance"
And Total Recall cause there was a moment where I felt just like Arnie when he got sucked onto the surface of mars, and his face was swelling and it looked really painful. Oh, and the third Indiana Jones...again, immortality and deserts...plus the irrational fear of easily duped antiquity collectors. -

Re: Movies & Playa Dreams
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 8:45 AM>>> It makes me dream about riding across the playa full speed on top of a school bus with big flapping wings of golden fabric. <<<
(Rodent)
I have a (fire engine red) school bus, with a roof deck on top.
I also have light fabric (lavender) wings (16 ft. span tip to tip) strapped to my shoulders, waving behind me as I fly through the air.
It seems that Playa dreams can and do come true!

the most obvious to me
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 5:23 PMa bunch of singer/dancer hippies pile in a bus and go out into the middle of the desert.
they build an elaborate city.
they sing.
they dance.
they wear gorgeous costumes.
there is much hedonism mixed in with religious observance.
in the end, they worship a man who is not burned but crucified.
they pack up, get back in the bus, and they leave.
Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Do you think you're what they say you are?
watch it again. -

Re: the most obvious to me
Sat, September 24, 2005 - 6:21 PMSTAR WARS!!!!!
Not a DAMN person mentioned STAR WARS!!!!
That Playa is Fucking Tattooine!!
The Mos Isley Bar. Trippy aliens everywhere, vehicles, and creatures, "people" speaking different languages, some 12 feet tall!
Sometimes I blur my reality to assume this idea, and suddenly everything is acceptable and makes perfect sense.
STAR WARS.

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Sat, September 24, 2005 - 10:14 PMNobody has mentioned "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio... I know it ends up lame at the end, but the beginning of it made me homesick.
Also, a 1970's animation of Harry Nilsson's "The Point"... (I have the original vinyl and comic book of it!) It's a story of a little boy named Oblio from the land of Point, where everyone has a point on the top of their head. Oblio was born without a point, so he was banned to the Pointless Forest. While he was out there, he realized that the forest wasn't pointless at all... has many adventures... and finds his way back to the land of Point. When it is discovered that Oblio had found his point, all the point on the heads of the citizens of point disappear. It is so much more detailed than that, I really reccommend it to everyone. Netflix, baby! -

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Sat, September 24, 2005 - 10:28 PMI really LOVED "The Point," which I clearly remember seeing on TV as a kid. I only saw it once, but I can still hum a few bars of "Me and My Arrow". My kids haven't seen it yet and I didn't know that it was available through Netflix. Thanks to you, it's at the top of my queue! -

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Sun, September 25, 2005 - 11:56 AMBy the way, "The Point", narrated by a young Dustin Hoffman, made history as the first the first 90-minute, made-for-television, animated feature. It was shown as ABC's "Movie of the Week" on Feb. 2, 1971. The story and several songs were written Harry Nilsson www.harrynilsson.com, whose hits included the Grammy-winning "(I Can't Live, If Living is) Without You" and the infectious "Put the Lime in the Coconut".
The one I remember from the film is:
Me and my Arrow
Straighter than narrow
Wherever we go, every one knows
It's me and my Arrow...

Re: Movies That Remind You of Burningman
Sun, September 25, 2005 - 12:02 PMSpeaking of the Balinese Monkey Chant (a version of which was performed in Center Camp on the Friday before the Burn), another film in which it is prominently featured is the erotic classic "Emmanuelle" (1974), starring Silvia Kristel. I haven't seen it in a while, but this is another cool movie that may remind you of Burning Man...

Sun, December 25, 2005 - 6:42 PM500 Motels, the Frank Zappa flick with Ringo Starr as Zappa.
Totally absurd, mocking of the default world, and obviously influenced by lots and lots of psychedelics. People are just talking the strangest nonsense and the most odd music is being played.

Plot Outline: A Harvard scientist conducts experiments on himself with a hallucinatory drug and an isolation chamber that may be causing him to regress genetically.
