Just saw Heather Graham on the Tonight Show. She said she went to burning man for two days and that it wasn't for her, she didn't get all spirtual or anything. Lots of naked people taking drugs. She did say there was a lot of creativity.

Probably a good thing.

Ok, so I'm not joking when I ask,

Who the fuck is Heather Graham?

Honestly, I have no idea who you guys are talking about here.

She was the female counterpart(side kick) to Austin Powers in the second Austin Powers movie...and I think she was in that Jack the Ripper movie with Johhny Dep...and she was rollergirl in Boogie Nights.

          Ok, FYI Burners,

I am just like Switzerland... i like to keep Neurtal

But I watched the "Heather Graham" Leno Interview... and she did say "There were a lot of Naked people there" but...
She did NOT say anything about DRUGS ....

? Where did that come from? all she mentioned is that you're walking around in a big dust storm, so you need goggles and a mask to breath most of the time, and she slightly mentioned the artwork. Then she also made a short point of mentioning that on the last night of the "BURN" everyone let's go of something that's been plauging them.

Now for a celeb who for the most part, I would think wouldn't get the whole idear of BM .... I was slightly impressed at what she did retain from the experience

          she did not knock it

and she did not mention drugs

ooopps i forgot to mention... that i do agree that it's better kept out of the Media though

I watched a documented short film on our local TV station out here in Santa Barbara about it, and it was done well, very lowkey, and he kept the camera out of a lot of areas better left alone ....

but the p diddy comment made earlier made me giggle, and I completely agree

Yeah she did. I wasn't hallucinating. Really, I wasn't on drugs or anything! To me she seemed to be dissing it. Saying it wasn't for her and didn't get "spritiual' or anything. Hmmm... wish I could see that again.

You weren't hallucinating - me and da boy were watching Leno when she mentioned BM (and yes, completely sober as well). That perked our attention right up, and the last thing she said was "Basically a bunch of naked people on drugs". She also mentioned "big dust clouds", and how there was lots of art and cars decorated as art, lots of people in costumes, and how a lot of people say it changes their lives and get all spiritual about it, but that she didn't really feel that herself, notwithstanding that she said she was there for (only) two days. She also talked about how there was a big wooden man burned at the end for people to "release" all the things they want to leave behind.

We were both dismayed that the last image she left the public with was the drug aspect...although I'm glad now that she didn't spend a huge amount of time talking about the event in general.

Who wants them making Bman the "cool thing to do"? Not me. We are better off with it staying as "under the radar" as possible (not that it is underground or anything now).
    • Re: Good

      Wed, September 29, 2004 - 7:48 AM
When I say them....I mean celebrities. US pop culture centers around famous people and rewards them enough.

At burningman everyone is a celebrity in my opinion.

If bman got "hot" or "cool" with famous people, it would be all over the news more often than now and next thing you know Pdiddy would be out on the playa blaring his souless music and crusing around in some monstrosity that he paid a couple million for.

      We're better off.

yeah what he says, she's doing us a favor keeping the Leno demographic away. John Stewert works BM into his routines a couple times a year and he was supposed to send a crew this year...but it never happened.

          Wed, September 29, 2004 - 8:59 AM
My friend's husband was supposed to be on the crew from Comedy Central...not sure why it didn't happen but I do know that the main reason they wanted to send a crew this year is because of the intended content of the Drive-In Theater. (Apologies if I've forgotten part of the name of the drive-in camp)

Apparently the host of the theater, which projects movies onto a screen For Your Enjoyment, wanted to show the Republican National Convention instead. This is what The Daily Show wanted to cover.

Does anyone know if this actually was shown? I plum forgot to look for it while I was there...

        > US pop culture centers around famous people <

Not to pick nits, but what country's pop culture doesn't?

And I agree, celebrities are way less interesting than the average person you meet on the playa.

I think we should take up a collection to pay Johnny Depp to say "I went to burningman and it was full of dullwitted fuckwads" -- at least 15 times in the next 2 years.

We can call it The Fuckwad Fund.

            Where do I contribute?

The real danger is that some conservative talk show host discovers BM and starts attacking it - that would be a disaster.

            Liberal trendy critics = good
            Conservative critics = bad

The 700 club already went off about Burningman several years ago, I dont recall what exactly they said. I do believe the word"satanism" was bandied about.

Heatehr Graham is an idiot. If she didnt like BUrningman, then why did she feel the need to talk about it on Leno? Did she have NOTHING else to chat about for five minutes? Jeez. I hate slebs.

um, i'm thinkin' that heather found out that the really really cool people are the ones who like to diss burning man. just like here. i mean, we have people here who didn't like burning man, and talk about it all the time, every day, repeating themselves.

hell, we should send her an invite to tribe. she might fit right in.

However, i still dont like her.

i don't have any opinion about her personally... but...

i think that any one of us, if being interviewed about what we did lately, would probably have some observation about burning man. and all would be valid.

i just don't get why some people think that "celebrities" (who are usually just people with visible jobs that they don't actually do all the time anyway) aren't supposed to have opinions about things.

i like it when people do something outside their usual world, i think it's good in the long run.

but i do hate when they mention things like drugs and nakedness that are bound to be misunderstood by the general public. but hell, if heather whoever wants to come out to the playa with rocker boy whatever and join the party -- i say welcome.

now if ivanna trump showed up, that might scare me.

This was my first year, but by sunday I was saying "In the good old days, we...." and talked about what we did on Monday and Tuesday, and how everything for the past four or five days was nothing like the first two days, and that you know, that means Burning Man totally sucks now compared to the "Good Old Days of Monday and Tuesday."

Damn, maybe I need to see it again, i swear i didn't here the 'drug' part ... then again i was typing on the computer when i was watching, so i definitly could have missed it. I mostly remember hearing her say 'Burning Man' and so I watched the screen ....

whatever, I thought it was lame she brought it up at first, but then I was thinking ... well maybe she's trying to get a bigger view audience for her next movie ... HA HA FAT CHANCE!

I should have specified, TV, Movie, athlete, and music personalities.

I think there are other countries that don't put as much emphasis on those listed above.

Yeah, that's why I said "probably a good thing". On the other hand what she said would not deter yahoos and spectators. We don't want to attact people who are looking of drugged out naked people. So it was a bit more damaging than good.

I tell many people that I talk to, especially co-workers, that Burning Man is dusty, hot, rainy, cold and just downright miserable.
Just like I tell my family on the east coast that Seattle is very rainy and depressing and they probably wouldn't want to live here.
Thanks to Heather Graham for the great advertisement!

I dunno, I guess I am paranoid. I don't think I could get seriously wasted while naked. I would worry about getting too much sun or not wanting to have to get back to camp to put my clothes on at sunset. I might be persuaded to get out of them for a little while ;) but I don't think I would be roaming the playa naked and wasted.

I really don't think a huge percentage of others do either unless they are sticking pretty close to their camp.

Maybe it's just a matter of experiance ... ever since I threw my clothes on that stage at a concert once in Mainz in March I have been pretty careful about removing clothing while totally toasted. It was kinda funny NOW. Had to pick up hitch-hikers and let them drive too ... but that's another thread.

She probably did you guys a favor.

What if she had ranted on endlessly about what a profound spiritual experience it was and how she came to feel so connected with 'the community'?

Reasons why this would have been bad:

    1) More misguided yahoos going there 'to participate' and doing nothing creative; probably upping the body count and/or other reportable problems, and certainly making it harder for people who are going for the art to get a ticket.

    2) For those of you who don't care or don't understand problem #1, lets' just say I think it would be sad to see celebrities hijacking your schtick.

"well then, she is officially off my "celebrities i'd like to fuck if i was drunk at an office x-mas party and she was also there and took me into the supply closet and wanted to fuck" list. "

Oh she's still on the list, but now, I won't respect her afterwards.

I wonder if she's the same fabulous Super Model(TM) that showed up at Ranger HQ and demanded that she be given a ride to Reno so she could catch a plane back to LA? She was *not* OK with the dust which was just ruining her oh-so-perfect skin and hair. BTW, her hair was starting to look like everyone else's. She was not pleased (x2) that no one was willling to insure that she made it back for that *fabulous* Hollywood party that she put off in order to come to the playa.

She was really pissed that some of us started to laugh at her request - especially since it was made about an hour before Man Burn.
