Re: Disgusting.
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 3:57 PMWow,yeah,I saw their commentary on the early burning of the man when it happened, that host and his guests are even more clueless than the yahoo factor that actually attends the event....yikes,there are so many things wrong with the whole "analysis"of the event,I do not even like the event anymore,am all for people enjoying it though for what they get out of it,and even tell people who haven't been that they should at least experience it once,it just ran its course for me....but ...ummmm....I am just speechless at this report. -

Re: Disgusting.
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 7:51 AMI think you would like the event if you stayed away from the analysing and focussed on being a part of something great which is really easy to do there. No where else do you find that level of generosity and love in one community. yes there are tourists and your attitude towards them will shape who they do or do not become that week. Everyone has the ability to transform, the positive insights you gained when you first came to BM will always be needed nad should be shared. It is a shame to see people become jaded and leave the best community on the planet. Everything evolves and takes work to nurture, it is only conservatives that want nothing to change and can not see the future in front of them. It is a trap of those over thirty and takes more vigilance to resist the older one becomes. Please Stay and evolove

Thu, September 6, 2007 - 3:59 PMYeah, it's Fox (Faux), which = disgusting. Why are you surprised?
BTW, I'm really sorry about what happened at your camp. {{{hug}}}

Thu, September 6, 2007 - 4:03 PMWAY off base. I don't mind people criticizing BM -- but not if they haven't gone, and especially if they have no clue what it is. No credibility whatsoever.

And it's based on nothing, just whiffs of information. How many other opinions do they have during their show that are also as empty and without an solid to support them?
Yes indeed, not worth the shit their mouths are filled with. -

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 11:12 PMPerhaps the best response is to ignore it, but also send as much threatening hate mail to Redeye as much as possible. =) ...Kinda half-serious about that.
But the more we stir up the dust in response, the more attention it will get, and we'll certainly attract more and more of the wrong crowds.

Re: Disgusting.
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 7:53 AMthe key is not to watch television
look away
create your own universe
create it with others
Burning Man is the perfect place for that
-
-
Re: Disgusting.
Thu, September 6, 2007 - 4:48 PMthat was actually painful to watch. I'm definitely understanding where the noticeable increase in snark and ignorant behavior might be coming from if that is what is currently passing for intelligent dialog in "popular culture."
However, I also couldn't help thinking "fine-- keep on thinking like that. Keep on being on the record of being against something that you just admitted you know nothing about." Move along, nothing to see here, kids.
And Moist, thank you for keeping on scraping at what I know must be a very raw wound for you, and putting this sort of crap in front of us. You report, we'll decide. Now if I can just figure out how to ACT about this.
My American Dream is that more people wake up to how much casual cruelty we allow in this world, and how much it isolates us, makes us fearful, and makes us throw up the barriers that keep the people out who could help us and share in our hurt, and make us realize that it's just not that bad. I hope that we can all keep the gates to our souls open, and the soul-less behavior on that video clip is a graphic demonstration of why it's so important.
<<hugs to you>>

liberating ourselves from the negative

Re: Disgusting.
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 3:07 PMMy new friend,
I cannot agree with you on this point.
It is important to discern what is worth giving our attention to, and what is not.
But a blanket statement does nothing, if not smother the need for diversity.
If we stop listening to people just because we don't like what we have to say, then how can we be responsible for sharing what we think?
Showing respect to people, standing in their shoes, makes it easier for people to feel less defensive and more open to standing in our shoes.
I am NOT condoning FOX NEWS. they behaved despicably and were cruel beyond measure. Not to mention they got all their facts wrong.
But if we weren't watching, we wouldn't have known they got it messed up. therefore, we wouldn't have the knowledge to act, for the benefit of ourselves and others in a public forum.
Dialogue is necessary. Listening to our enemies, doesn't make us stupid, it makes us better critical thinkers. we can say, "I disagree, but thank you for your opinion." and in return, NOT EVERYONE< but I must trust that most people, when met with a level mind, and a steady eye in conversation will be willing to listen in return.
And there in lies the opening.

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 1:36 AMSent to redeye@foxnews.com, for whatever it's worth (probably not much)...
Oh, ha ha. Really funny. Way to make light of a tragedy, you assholes.
Such deaths are not the norm at Burning Man: the event has been remarkably low in fatalities over the years. Yet it is a counter-cultural event, and as such, it is an escape from things like Fox News. And every once in a while, even that escape won't be sufficient, and a good person will feel compelled to extinguish himself.
You don't actually give a damn, do you? Far better to go for the cheap, cynical laugh.
I've been attending Burning Man for a decade now, and I will give you this much: it's getting a bit too overpopulated. Your mockery should help to keep those who watch Fox News on a regular basis away, and for that, I will thank you. You clearly consider yourselves to be way too good for the BRC community, and far be it from me to disillusion you.
Had your village idiot "anti-Burning Man" commentator actually spent ten minutes in the Temple of Forgiveness, she might have realized that there is far more to this event than her hate-filled, cheap jokes could acknowledge. Not that she'll ever get within a hundred miles of the playa: it might ruin her hair. -

The facts
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 2:27 AMOn the morning of Thursday, August 30th a young man from Colorado
chose to end his life in the rafters of a public tent at the Comfort &
Joy Burning Man theme camp.
Though he was unknown to us, in the wake of his passing we're learning
from those who knew him that he was creative, kind, unconventional and
smart, and that he was regarded with affection by many.
His final act, committed in solitude, has one lasting effect as it
brings us together to mark his passing. To all who have offered our
camp their sympathy and support during this time, thank you. To all
who knew him, please accept our sincere condolences.
It is estimated that there was an one hour interval between the last
visit to the tent by a camp member, and the discovery of the body by a
second camp member. It is believed that the tent was unoccupied
during this time, and that there were no witnesses to the suicide.
One other individual, not associated in any way with the camp, was in
the tent at the time the body was discovered. Emergency personnel
were immediately contacted by camp members. Authorities responded
within minutes and closed the scene upon arrival.
The Black Rock City Rangers, Sheriffs and other law enforcement
officials who assisted us with this incident were very professional,
supportive, and helpful to us at a difficult time. We are grateful
for their services. We are also thankful for the warm and organized
support we have received from the grief counselors from the Black Rock
City Mental Health Team. They helped us openly discuss what had
happened and come to a shared understanding of the morning's events.
Much of our camp was quarantined while the coroners did their jobs and
we canceled that day's events (a yoga class, a queer discussion group,
glitter body painting and a watercolor painting workshop).
As a camp, we decided to make a contribution to David Best's Temple of
Forgiveness, where people can mourn, remember, write messages and
leave items to be ceremonially burned on Sunday night. We felt the
rope the young man used represented the terrible violence he committed
upon himself and the people around him. By sending the rope up in
flames, we hoped to allow some of that pain to disperse. None of us
believe that this young man wanted to trouble us with his actions.
The members of Comfort & Joy extend their deepest sympathy to all who
knew this young man. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and
special people in his life. Although we will never know or understand
him the way you did, he indeed touched us as well, made us grow, and
hopefully become better individuals. May the rest of his journey be
peaceful and lead him to the joy we all seek in our lives.
We look forward to continuing our mission of creating positive, warm
and supportive queer community both in Black Rock City and the Bay
Area.
With love and respect,
The Comfort & Joy Family

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 11:15 PMNo.
Don't stir up any more dust about this whole thing. The more news coverage, the more BM will blow up to be so popular, it will become over-populated and that'll be the end. -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 10:59 PMIt doesn't matter how much news coverage it gets it's going to keep getting bigger. If we each convinced one person to come there would be 100, 000 next year. I think thats the best way to influence the event positively (aside from being a participating member of the community), to bring in more people who are like minded. -

Re: Disgusting.
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 12:24 AMThere's a dark truth you're overlooking there.

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 12:43 PMWhy are you people upset at this? If anything this is good!
Any tool that really listens to a bunch of yammering yentas on Fox News is someone who you really don't want at Burningman. These are the same losers that stand around and criticize everything they see and that they are right all the time. Forget these people and don't spend a second trying to defend Burningman to anyone. If they don't even want to get clued in by reading a single web page (www.burningman.com) then we don't want them there.
in general, stop trying to justify your vacation to anyone who makes fun of Burningman. I was once around a diner table with 10 people and they were making fun of Burningman. I sat there quietly until they all looked at me waiting for me to defend Burningman to them. I just politely said, "if that is what you people really think, then please do me and the rest of the Burningman community a favor and please don't go. We don't want you there and you will most likely not enjoy yourself because you are so close minded." I was greeted with dead silence and a few faces of shock. I then explained to them they did not know what they were talking about and they need to get informed before being so ignorant of what they were speaking about. They just seemed surprised that I would not defend myself or the actions of 40,000 people to them. I was asked some good follow up questions about the event and I politely explained them to the group. The good news, is that I think I may have convinced a few people to go. -
-
-
Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 1:17 PMJason, while i agree with you that it's a good thing more of "those kind" of people will not be going to burning man, it's not about "defending" what we do on our vacation
it's about the fact that a so-called news agency has the audacity to sit around joking about someone's suicidal death at an event just because they have disdain for it....it is totally uncalled for and shows extremely poor taste
i don't give a shit what they think about burning man (good, they're so ignorant they will probably never go)...but to treat this poor young man's death as chuckling entertainment---it is really disgusting and heart-wrenching...unbelievable, almost like watching a PARODY of Fox news, but the sad thing is, it ain't...

Mon, September 10, 2007 - 10:34 PMDon't believe what you hear
Don't believe what you see
If you just close your eyes
You can feel the enemy
When I first met you girl
You had fire in your soul
What happened your face of melting in snow?
Now it looks like this
And you can swallow
Or you can spit
You can throw it up
Or choke on it
And you can dream
So dream out loud
You know that your time is coming 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down
No, nothing makes sense
Nothing seems to fit
I know you'd hit out
If you only knew who to hit
And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in
'Cause I need it now
To take the cup
To fill it up
To drink it slow
I can't let you go
I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And don't let the bastards grind you down
Oh, it hurts baby
What are we going to do? Now it's all been said
No new ideas in the house and every book has been read
And I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that
And you can dream
So dream out loud
And you can find
Your own way out
And you can build
And I can will
And you can call
I can't wait until
You can stash
And you can seize
Responsibilities
And I can love
And I can love
And I know that the tide is turning 'round
So don't let the bastards grind you down

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 7:51 PMYou are right. It's pretty fucked up they made fun of a suicide, but that is Fox News.
When someone is such a tasteless asshole, as they were, you should just let them be that way. They are not really gaining friends or allies with how they were speaking. I think it is safe to say that when you make fun of a suicide, you are gaining no friends and just reveling who you are. It's pretty much a social taboo to make fun of people who commit suicide no matter what Red or Blue state you live in. -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 8:07 PMSuicide is not funny, and Fox's tastelessness speaks for itself.
Suicide takes incredible people from us. All satire and parody and everything bad that one could possibly say about Burning Man -- and yes, we are indeed ripe for parody to some degree -- how the hell do you get that jaded and that cynical as these jerkoffs have managed to become?
Thank you for stating it well, Jason.

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 1:46 PMIs this really so suprising?
It's FOX.
As burners we can watch this and see how callous and misinformed it is, distorted and completely false. Please keep in mind that all news is like this. We have the unique view of knowing otherwise, but the media, especially FOX, is a huge offensive joke. Remember this "report" the next time you're tempted to believe anything they say, about anything, ever. -

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 2:46 PMI agree with you Danger Angel.
We are responsible for ourselves when we are at the burn. Radical Self Reliance.
Other people do not necessarily grasp the challenge of being in the harsh elements for days, or why, people who are business execs would choose to go into a world with LSDr's and party with artist cars.
It is up to us to communicate with others, what we are about, individually, and collectively.
If we don't express ourselves, other people will interepret our expression, and make what they want of it. THAT's ART.
But when it comes to respecting a persons life, and making fun... of something and NOT taking the time to understand, it isn't Journalism.
It's A show boating event of LOOK at me egos and I DON'T have the time to step outside my box and understand your world attitude.
That isn't right. It isn't ethical, and it risks taking Burning Man and turning it into a Spectacle. Not the beautiful experience that we take from it, because we made that experience. But a spectacle, like the old time freak shows, or people getting thrown in asylums for being out of the ordinary. It isn't right.
We have to stand up for ourselves. for our friends, and for the ones who can no longer stand up for themselves, because they are gone.
My deepest sympathies to those who have lost their friend.
In love and respect.
Mizz Cherry Pie.

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 2:16 PMIt suggest to me that Fox and its slaves are starting to get afraid. Thus the repeat insinuation that anyone cool does not go to BM. I suspect that they are very much afraid of the Freedom that BM represents and look for any opportunity to devalue it.

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 2:56 PMno. no don't do this, confusing what burning man is. people, if you believe burning man is just an lsd, candy flip festival, don't go. please. if getting fck'd up is all it means you're missing out anyway. it's about giving. not just giving presents but giving yourself and your presence, pushed pasted comfortable limits. xcuse the poetry cuz this is serious. it's about surviving in extreme conditions that push you past comfortable zones, and finding something in you to create, real friendships, connections, community. THAT is the art. and I'm surprised and dismayed by people who went and didn't get it. go fck yourself, slow, hard, and deep. because real burners don't leave each other hanging alone. -

Re: Disgusting.
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 3:43 PMI think what bothers me is that they would cover a suicide. I've worked as a reporter as a past and that was the one topic we would never cover out of respect for the deceased's families. And then to cover a suicide like that in such a horrible, disgusting way.
My condolances to the family of the boy who died. Peace and love to them. -

In a case like this, where it happened in a public venue such as Burning Man, i think it has to become public, as an assurance that it was actually a suicide, rather than something even worse.
The good new is that at least some of those attending are still part of a community that cares and by knowing, can provide support for this mans family and friends.

Watched it again.... and....
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 5:03 PM... I noticed something interesting.
At one point the host said something along the lines of,
"now don't you all agree that it's a good idea to just stay home
and watch television instead of going to something like this?"
which was followed by one of those women saying,
"Yes, do you LSD at home... " & more laughing about dirty hippies.
funny tho, that their base motivation seems to be to encourage
people to stay hooked up their propaganda boxes & not think for themselves.
The liberation & self-actualization that people experience at Burning Man
must be really threatening to their consumerist/capitalist paradigm.
interesting. -

It must be so nice to laugh about a person's death. Go ahead and laugh about burning man all you like, because you are definitely NOT the people that would ever understand it and are definitely not welcome. Death happens everywhere, and believe you me, if it were a family member of yours that committed suicide or some other tragic form of death, you would not be laughing so callously. How about a public apology for your ignorance on human life and disrespect. Shame shame shame. This is how fox gets a bad reputation. Thanks for the reminder on how Inhumane your organization can be.

Fox News exists as a tool to help control society.
They will not change because of a letter writing campaign.

educating people about the lies& propaganda on Fox etc, and
helping free others from television dependence.

Hey, talk show hosts that push your buttons are not fascists. It's called free speech. Their slant on the burn is designed to appeal to the biases of their audience, nothing more.
Get real. You are trivializing the real political problems in the country of right-wing agendas controlling government institutions by conflating some off-the-wall smirks about Burning Man by these talking heads as being fascism.
You really want to do some payback, then prank them, make fake media reports that are so absurd it is embarrassing to contemplate and file them with Fox and these folks' production department and see if it gets online.

Re: Disgusting.

Seriously, how are they aspiring to be Nazis? Is it the book burning, the rounding up and killing of Jews and other minorities, the racial purity laws they're trying to pass, their wars of conquest for lebensraum against Mexico and Canada? Isn't just a little too easy to call someone a Nazi when you disagree with them? I'm not a big fan of Fox News, but it's a cable channel, not a political movement bent on world domination......and you can always change the channel to CNN or get your news from the net. And comparing a bunch of yahoos on Fox to Nazis kind of trivializes what the Nazis were really all about. I'm not trying to pick a fight, really, I'm just sayin'...... the comparison is not accurate, it's not fair, and to be frank, I don't think it's very well thought out. -

Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 10:48 PMOkay, this'll be in two columns, column one, Nazis, column two, the aspiration.
Is it the book burning ==> Dixie Chicks CDs
the rounding up and killing of Jews and other minorities ==> This takes power, you know the gays would be their first target
the racial purity laws they're trying to pass ==> Racial for the nazis, Religious for the fundis.
their wars of conquest for lebensraum against Mexico and Canada ==> Isn't modern air travel wonderful? Why capture a border country that could potentially retaliate when you can capture a third world nation without a real military (Iraq)?
As for your last comment, Fox News is the voice of a political movement.
While I admit that Godwin's Law is often true, I also firmly believe that until the 2006 election we were very much headed down the path to fascism. Thank God the electorate turned out in large enough numbers to rescue our country despite the attempted electoral manipulations by Rove and co (reference the Attorney General firings as one of many examples of tampering.) Now there is a branch of government that has majority opposition and therefore would create a situation in which blood would have to be spilled to declare a President for Life. Whereas before 2006 if Bush had done such a terrible thing (as to declare himself President for Life) I have little doubt that the Republican congressional majority would have dropped to their knees to kiss the ground before him. And if that had happened what do you think Fox NEWS would have had to see on the subject?
They aspire to be fascists, whether that be in the form of Nazism specifically or generally is not what's important. What's important is their goal, what saved us is their incompetence. -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 1:32 AM"Is it the book burning ==> Dixie Chicks CDs "
those cds were bought and paid for by the people that chose to destroy them, they weren't confiscated by the secret service and burned at a rally.
"the rounding up and killing of Jews and other minorities ==> This takes power, you know the gays would be their first target"
This one, I'm not quite sure how to answer, it makes you sound a bit paranoid. And coming from a libertarian type (I've got my own issues with paranoia about fascism in this country), that's saying a lot.
But you mention Godwin's law, so it still strikes me as curious that you would resort to the Nazi comparison.... as to the rest of the stuff (border countries that could retaliate, etc), I'm not even gonna touch those. But this was a good discussion, hope you had as good a burn as I did! -

Re: Disgusting.
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 11:18 AMJason, I'm going to assume that the issue of gay civil rights doesn't play as prominent a role in your life as it does mine.
Did you know that in many countries being gay is punishable by death? Did you know that there are many on the conservative right here in the USA who would like to see that be the case here as well?
GLAAD: "Christian Radio Host Urges Death to Gay People" : tinyurl.com/yojlm7
Not enough? How about this... did you know that all of the original 13 states declared homosexuality punishable by death? That's right, not only can it happen here, it DID happen here. www.gnmagazine.org/issues/g...attle.htm
It was only a couple years ago that the pre-Alioto/Roberts supereme court handed down a decision banning anti-Sodomy laws that put gays in jail for YEARS for having sex in some states.
Here's a prime choice of lyrics from some American band: tinyurl.com/ywkhqu
You may not remember it, but I remember when AIDS first reared it's ugly head and I listened as fundamentalist right heros like Jessie Helms stood on the senate floor and declared that as a country we should do NOTHING to stop the spread of AIDS becuase it was god's punishment against faggots: home.att.net/~jrhsc/helms.html
So Jason, please understand that I had strong grounds for my "paranoia." But just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean I'm not right. I'd rather see the storm on the horizon than pretend it doesn't exist. For me, these people appear to very much be striving for Nazi like fascism. It almost seems that to them it's the perfect model that they want very desperately to reproduce. Thankfully they seem to have failed. I don't believe they could possibly accomplish whatever sick unstated goals they had for power without their own congressional majority. Rove and Alberto Gonzales weren't able to manipulate the vote totals in 2006 to insure a Republican win despite the public will. People came out in droves to stop the ball that was already rolling. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Disgusting.
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 12:43 PM"Jason, I'm going to assume that the issue of gay civil rights doesn't play as prominent a role in your life as it does mine."
You are absolutely right, and it's mainly because I'm not gay. However, I despise fascism, and I think "Christians" who believe in "death to gay people" are animals.
But back to my point about Nazis.... when it comes to this issue you can easily use any number of regimes from past or present to compare people to, I don't think I have to list them here. And when you bring gay rights into it.... well, kind of ironic, but many of the founding members of the Nazi party were gay.
And, once again, not trying to pick a fight or be antagonistic here, but you seem to think that there's this giant difference between the donkeys and elephants. And the whole "manipulating vote totals" in 2006. You should perhaps check out some info on the history of midterm elections as well as voter fraud in this country. What you find may surprise you. -

Tue, September 11, 2007 - 1:45 PMI'm aware of the history, and it's bad when -anybody- does it. However the Republicans went way way way beyond what has come to be considered the "norm" for that type of cheating. In fact, just about everything this administration has done has gone "way way way" beyond the tolerance norms that our system is able to deal with.
It looks like the publics big turn out in 2006, paired with a low evangelical turn out, is the only thing that managed to keep this country from permanently derailing. They can only bump so many percentage points with manipulations before it becomes too obvious to ignore. They've been skirting that thin line for the last 4 elections.
I shutter to think where our country would be by Nov 2008 had the Republicans maintained their majority in congress.

Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 4:47 PMfrom the typical conservative Christian pro-life perspective, it is easy to joke about suicide since it is seen as a shameful act of weakness that will send your soul straight to hell. suicide is not the tragic loss of a troubled soul, but the pathetic last act of weakling. by joking about it so casually, they reinforce this traditional view of suicide as a shameful and damning taboo. take heart in the knowledge that the ratings for the "Red Eye" within the 800 channel universe are probably pretty low. and the rednecks who are up at this hour are probably too wasted to recall any of it.
also...rich white kids spending trust fund money? I attended this year and saw more middle American-AAA-Via magazine camper families than ever. and hundreds of men who apparently cannot even afford pants. regardless, it's comforting to know the pro-business, robber baron capitalist fox crowd hates rich people too. how much do you think that dickface host spent on coke, hookers, and speed boats this year? -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 5:47 PM"typical conservative Christian pro life perspective" makes it easy to joke about suicide? so liberal atheists don't also make jokes about suicide? come'on... -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 7:02 PMsure liberal atheists make jokes about suicide. liberal atheist suicide jokes are equally in bad taste. if you've ever had a friend or family member commit suicide, these throw away jokes about this subject will hurt, no matter where they are coming from. hence-in my opinion-the joke is in bad taste. however, i wanted to point how the casual joking in this particular video comes across as a bullying sort of humor whose subtext serves to reinforce a particular conservative "common sense" perspective told by and for self-perceived "winners" who can't begin to imagine why an idiot weirdo drug-fueled trust-fund weakling "loser" would kill himself while (here's the punch line) people mistook the suicide for performance art. that may be funny to some, but the joking in this video is witless, thoughtless, inconsiderate, condescending, disrespectful, in poor taste and not at all funny. -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 7:27 PMfair enough, you make a good point: it's bad taste all the way. but to be fair, my liberal atheist friends are far more likely than my "Christian conservative" friends to joke about subjects like this. that's been my experience, anyway. mostly, I was just wondering why you would label the idiots that host "Red Eye" as Christian conservative types......they really don't seem like it to me. -
-
Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 8:42 PMI don't think of the Red Eye staff as Christians, I regard them as paid bullies.
I don't support jokes about suicide -- it happens in too many families and causes far too much pain.
And I've sent the following to Fox News. It may not change minds, but I had to send it:
--------
Your coverage of the recent suicide at Burning Man was, to say the least, in poor taste. The video clip that Fox itself provides shows a group of "talent" making jokes about the death of someone who must have been in extreme emotional pain. The implication was that the death was drug-related, and that his friends were so ignorant, intoxicated, or indifferent that his death went unnoticed for hours, a claim that I have good reason to disbelieve.
There was no concern for the family or friends of the victim. There were no attempts to report the truth facts about the suicide or about the event, except for an interjection by the resident "nerd" that was quickly put down. The overall tone was careless, uninformed, and bullying.
I find it sad that you spend so much time and effort attempting to tear apart our culture when you have so many resources that could be used to giving respectful coverage to the diversity of our country. It is impossible to give credibility to any story on Fox when this kind of coverage exists.
You may have already guessed that I go to Burning Man and enjoy it. For the record, I am well beyond being a teenager, I do not get intoxicated, and I have held a computer research position for over 25 years. One value of Burning Man is that it has appeal to many ages, backgrounds, and income levels. All you need is an open mind and an open heart, which would be both a welcome change and a distinct benefit to Fox News.

Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 9:21 PMfirst off i don't want to get too hung up on the "christian conservative" or "liberal atheists" labels. i really don't know anyone personally to whom these labels accurately apply. that said, i'm not sure whether or not the jackasses at the red eye would self-identify as "conservative christians", but that is certainly a fair chunk of their target audience. beyond that specific group, they target the more general conservative group which is nominally christian in culture if not religion. i infer this by comparing the way in which these comedic giants deliver their humor, to the way in which some of the people from my own small west texas town conducted themselves. I have heard friend's parents talk about suicide as if it were a moral failing, a dishonorable and un-manly cop-out for weak-willed losers that damns the soul for all eternity. while not saying these things specifically, the tone of the red eye crew strikes me as pretty dang similar. this painfully dumb humor served up to the lowest common late nite denominator reveals a dominating cultural force that i find oppressive as it tends to pick on the fragile, the vulnerable, the weak while having a good chuckle at all those freaks unwilling to conform to their dipshit norms. it speaks to fear, insecurity, and immaturity and in its small, cheap way perpetuates a cycle of subjugation and humiliation that depresses me to no end. but, hey, it's cool we're all talking about it I suppose so it is serving some positive function.

Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 10:14 PMTo Whom It May Concern-
Hello. I don't watch your program. I don't watch
television for the most part, to be honest. I get my
news from a wide variety of websites, newspapers and
magazines. I had the misfortune of watching the
propaganda and lies reported by your "media" outlet in
the past and I have not watched it since.
I happened to ride up to Comfort and Joy the healing
camp that the young man decided to take his life in on
the morning after for a then canceled yoga class. My
friend and I were deeply struck by the sad news that
someone had felt so alone as to feel the need to end
their life at Burning Man.
Perhaps, when the young man is identified, you'd like
to laugh in the faces of his family and friends and
show them just how callous you are. I know I shouldn't
be- as you are Fox news and your track record is
filled with propaganda, lies and sell-outs- but I am
shocked at the lack of humanity displayed in this
video of your Redeye show.
Happily, not one of the people on the video seemed to
begin to have a concept of what the Burning Man event,
city, art, and community are all about. Perhaps that
means you will never grace us with your presence.
I am open-minded, honest, hard-working, educated,
traveled, cultured, talented, intelligent, well liked,
employed, healthy, active in my community, liberal,
and I vote. I am not your viewing public. I have been
in attendance at Burning Man for 9 of the 21 years and
I have seen and been a part of some of the most
amazing works of creativity, displays of generosity,
healing, and gatherings of like minded individuals
that is the closest thing to a Utopian society ever
created in America and I am proud of that community.
In any city, there are bound to be deaths and crimes,
which is sadly all that current Rupert Murdoch owned
media outlets seem to care about, but there is much
more to Black Rock City than the lies your show put
out.
Some witness accounts of the tragedy of this man
ending his life are on these sites if you care to have
a "fair and balanced" story-
sfscene.blogspot.com/2007/09...-at.html
www.playajoy.org/
But I suppose making fun of that which you don't
understand is easier and gains higher ratings than
having a real news program.
Respect,
Mary McGloin

Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 10:38 PMThere are about 30,000 suicides per year in the U.S., 80% male, and suicide is the third leading cause of death in the 18-24 age group. Suicide is also significantly underreported, for a variety of social and religious reasons. It is estimated (phone survey) that 1 in 15 adults personally knew a suicide victim who died in the past year.
The odds are very high that there has been a suicide in the past 10 years known to the staff of Red Eye.

Re: Disgusting.
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 11:46 PMTo Fox News "Red Eye",
I am writing your organization in order to address the recent, greatly
misinformed, reporting FOX news broadcast about the Burning Man event. The clip
is circulating online, and it is perceived as a direct slander toward the
burning man community and it's participants. Just like in 'your' neighborhood,
you have community issues, and it is no different at Burning Man. The difference
with Burning Man is that the majority of it's community members are free-spirited and open-minded
participants; artists, musicians, anthropologists, et al. Many are highly educated, employed or successfully
self-employed - a plethera of enlightened people. The average age of this community
is 36. The average physical beauty is also high above the norm for any
community. Are all of these attributes somehow threating to *you*? Instead of
embracing the beauty and the loving reasons most of us attend this event, you
chose to cast stones in your glass house. Not wise.
I strongly suggest that you refrain from broadcasting misguided, and flat out
false, information about an event that you have obviously not attended and
experienced for yourself. The ignorance in your erroneous public criticism is
unprofessional and bias. It's typical for ignorant people to lash out at that
which they don't understand, and fear. Learn the truth and enlighten yourself in
the process! Your fear, and the way in which you project it, comes across a bit
"high school"; the mean girls who gossip without a care to who they hurt.
Unless you care to join us and participate in this wonderful community, and
really come to understand it's value - leave it, or at the very least find a way
to balance the reporting by also highlighting the positives. The negative parts
are the minority of what takes place, but somehow the media always seem to
inflict inflated information on the general public; over-exxagerated and completely
blown out of proportion.
You know what? Probably is best that you don't come unless you offer up a formal
and official apology to the suicide victim's friends and family. Status Quo, and you
won't have the red carpet rolled out for ya'll, nor will the welcoming wagon filled with
LSD meet you at the gates either. Hrmph............. -

Re: Disgusting.
Tue, September 11, 2007 - 1:10 PMLyrics to the song 'Suicide is Painless'
Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
[REFRAIN]:
that suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...
[REFRAIN]
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.
[REFRAIN]
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.
[REFRAIN]
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
[REFRAIN]
A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
is it to be or not to be
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
[REFRAIN]
'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you please.
