A TMZ of BRC exclusive!

MOOP found blowing up against a Reno resort hotel turned out to be a six page booklet of advance instructions for the driver of a 15 member group of luxury burners. The group appears to be about 10 “Paying Guests” and about 5 staff. The names have been suppressed to protect the innocent victims who were probably sold the “Burning Man experience” but likely still do not get it.

Excerpt: Page 3

PROTOCOL ON CAMP

1. GUEST’S COME FIRST FOOD-LINES ALL MEALS AND SERVICE
2. THEY ARE PAYING GUEST’S, PLEASE TREAT THEM SO.
3. LOUNGE AREA SEATING AND COMFORT-THEY ARE FIRST!
4. MAKE UP OF BEDS AND TIDYING OF RV’S DONE EVERY DAY!
5. CHECK WATER BOTTLES IN FRIDGES OFTEN
6. TOWELS IN BATHROOMS
7. TRASH TAKEN OUT
8. GUESTS GET FIRST PICK ON BIKES AT ALL TIMES
9. MANDATORY ALL STAFF AT CAMP AT ALL MEAL TIMES FOR CLEAN-UP AND SERVICE.

The other 5 pages tell us that the guests were met at the airport. The 4 RV camp with a shaded (camo) lounge area was set up for them. The staff slept in tents. The guests come from several area codes in New York, LA and San Francisco and include several published authors (self help section) a few with singing or acting credits. There are no “A-listers” but the words “frequent contributor to CNN” and “clients included Madonna” appear on several of their web pages.

If any of the guests want to contact me directly, for half of what you paid for this I will offer to give you the REAL Burning Man experience but you will sleep in a tent you will put up yourself and we will shop for and cook our meals together. :)

Burning Man is now the career of many people. It is people's bread and butter. That results in a completely different aspect to the thing than when it was something fun to do in the desert. If people want a pay raise or medical insurance or whatever, then the event needs to grow. If they want to rub elbows with "names" in artistic circles, then they must be catered to.

This camp you discovered evidence of isn't the only such camp out there. Pretty much the same thing was being done as early as 04 too. People payed for a "turn key" burning man experience and their RVs or tents and meals and showers were provided for along with staff to help them in exchange for a cash payment.

There is a certain cache' in some circles about going to burning man. It is basically one of the things that a person wishing to appear "edgy" must do at least once. It is one of the punches on their ticket and there are enterprising people around who are willing to fulfill that requirement in exchange for cash.

My personal opinion is that simply lifting the firearms ban would go a long way to putting the event back on the right track but the event would shrink and that would mean less revenue, less staff, fewer golf carts, and all sorts of hardships on a lot of people. The way the thing is configured now, there is no way for it to go but bigger without throwing people out into the street. There is almost a requirement at this point to turn the thing into a carnival in order to keep people employed. I am NOT trying to judge that one way or the other, I am simply stating how I observe the situation. It is what it is. Maybe it is more of an alternative "world's fair" or something now. Whatever it is, it would be a lot easier if the org just told people what their real vision is for the thing going forward that all these people (including me) speculating on shit.

Yes it is disheartening to see that you can pay for a "pampered" BM experience...

But is it possible that maybe the spectator-types coming in are in SOME WAY being influenced positively? That perhaps a spark of creativity happens, maybe they go back to their hometowns and dayjobs with a new idea of how life can be... I mean, certain events like BM are like "cultural mixers", in which the lower common denominator gets a chance to blend in with the higher vibrations/creativities and HOPEFULLY get a kick in the ass towards a better reality.

      Let's just hope.

      So true.

I dropped by the regionals tent and met the leader of one regional who told me that his _goal_ was to make enough money off his regional that he didn't have to have another job.

The BMORG is now making money off of the event (they won't tell us how much), and they're franchising this idea.

      *amen*

Let the guns back in, and get rid of the DPW. What if there were no roads and no center camp built? The people would once again have to build their own city. In that sense, everyone would be forced to participate. If you want a road - mark off an area. If you want street signs - make one.

And what is wrong with pampering! I have lived as an Urban Survivalist and believe me the experience puts chills down my spine years after I have been living indoors and eating off of plates. I still run on Survival mode when the air is changing, my water gets low and I must run to the store.
I wish I could simply fly up to Reno, rent a good sized RV and have everything put together by the time I hit BRC. What's the matter with a few servants? I have been a servant myself, I know if I had a servant I would treat him or her too good. Instead of getting a pampering next year I must drive a very scary long ways, hope to remember the tickets and prepare the Doppleganger suit to the best of my ability. While I am there I assure you I will live at any sober camp that I find and pray I don't indulge, even accidently, in anything stronger than coffee. Sex is open for suggestions.
Yeah I want to be pampered, yeah I'm a virgin so what? the whole experience sounds frightening and exciting. I hope I can weather Burning Man with as much comfort as possible, if there are individuals who can afford more comfort than my meager existence I hope I can meet up with them and they share their bounty. Burning Man is an extravagance by simply purchasing a ticket, this doesn't include anything except an Idea of what could happen, what will happen and what one wishes will or will not happen.
Go ahead and crucify me now for not being there, for being a Republican and standing up for the pampered celebrity. Do you understand what they endure in a day of shooting? maybe if you stood around in the sweltering heat taking and retaking a stupid scene while dressed wearing a ridiculous costume In Los Angeles's Skid Row as opposed to Burning Man you might begin to feel otherwise.
I was there in L.A on location for a film studio for 12.5 hours keeping the public away from famous people, the crew in general and all four hundred extras. Yesterday by the time all of our day was finished all of us, from the Director and cast to the security guards and technicians were incredibly tired. By the industry standards this was considered a short day however; the day was still long, hot and boring.
Yeah yesterday we needed some sort of pampering, some more so than others. If the Burning Man experience requires than I am to be miserable while I am there due to poverty, The Elements, lack of sleep because of a bad sleeping arrangement and starvation count me out.
If I could give you my experience I would. You can't understand because, Like A Virgin, you were not there.
Leave me and Madonna alone, we have had a hard day.

I believe that luxury BM Camp Experience may have been the one parked back arounf 5:30 and H(?). Supposedly charged folks $5000 for the 'expreience.'

Without going into too much detail I understand that the camp (or one similar to it) and their Richie Rich clients had a Chernobyll style meltdown around Thursday. I think it started out with - get this - no ability to do grey water pumpdown of their luxury RVs. I hear it pretty much went downhill from there.

We cracked open a bottle of tawny port when we heard the reports.....

there was a similar camp at 8:15 and B (betw. B and C) - with several *enornous* RVs, filled-up with apparently rich people, and a crew in tents (several identical, brand-new tents), probably for the organizers / crews. they were my neighbors. the big RV arrived on thursday night.

people in that camp came from various places, and they would not want to explain how they knew each-other. now i can see why! they did not seem to really belong there, and they were always clean of dust, showering several times a day in their RVs.

so i think that there was several of those camps on the playa this year.

I'm actually a tad amused by the whoel post <smirk> We have many nice things in my camp. I would have to say that we take an enormous amount of pride in the fact that we built most of it ourselves. Of course that menat when our shit blew up, was blown over or filled with dust and semi fucked...we fixed it or made something new out of other stuff we brought. Tho after a third repair things were left for dead or put out of our misery.

Pampers camp sounds boring. Saw a sticker this year. MY favorite vacation is your worst nightmare... I think that's the case for some folks and I'm REALLY Ok with that. I like the buffer that it adds to the space.

i think that BM should outlaw RV all-together. especially, they should have done that for the green year.

no RV, just tents - or sleep in a truck or in a car, but no RV at all (except for people with special / medical needs, the working crews and BM organizers, maybe). if you want, you can build a cabin, but no f*$%ing RVs.

i don't like rules, but that rule, i would be super happy with.

also, i would like to add: no diesel or gas powered vehicule on the playa - only human powered, or electrical, or wind-powered. steam powered using wood or natural-gas allowed.

while on duty with the perimeter crew, i noticed a really fancy big helicopter would fly into the spaceport daily to take trash, dishes, whatever, and deliver freshly catered food and goods. a mysterious black van would ride out there to make the exchange, and the copter would fly back to where it came.

i don't know where the black van went after that.

I'll just say this. When I win the lottery, ya that one for 100 million dollars, I will no longer live like a pauper. First, I'll buy a nice house in a nice neighborhood (no more trying to fix shit up only to have bullets shot at my house). I'll also buy a nice car. In fact, I'll get alot of nice things that I never had before. Why should that money just sit in a bank, it's meant to be used!

I'd also quit my day job. I went to school for fine arts, and if I had all the free time and money in the word, I would create some of the most amazing works of art. And I wouldn't be thinking about how I'll be able to sell that art to make my money back.

And when it comes to burning man, ya, I'll probably buy a very nice RV. And i'll run the AC all day long. And I'd also help finance an amazing theme camp, and an equally amazing art project. Maybe even an amazing art car. Overall, I'd be living the high life on the playa, but I'd be spending so much more on the community than I would myself.

Dunno if I'd need servants. At this stage in my life I value privacy more so than having someone clean up after me. I'm the kind of person who stays in a hotel and leaves the "do not disturb" sign on the door the entire time.

So it's kinda hard for me to judge these people.

Many of us may wish everyone on the playa is as poor as us. But when it comes down to it, most of us are middle class, but there is a minority of upper class who do go. And when you're dressed up as a bunny and riding around on your bike, doesn't matter what your economic background is, on the playa we are peers. And that is one thing I love about burning man.

      >>And when you're dressed up as a bunny and riding around on your bike, doesn't matter what your economic background is, on the playa we are peers. And that is one thing I love about burning man.<<

No; if your money is still good, then "we" aren't "peers" at all - your money is still good, so you're better and better off than anyone who is paying lip service to some kind of vestigial "ideal".

If what you want is to be rich, you don't have to go to the alkali to make it happen. If you want to be something other than a vacationer, you can leave your prestige at home.

If what you want is to serve as complimentary eye-candy for the rich, you'll always have Burning Man.
