Eplaya/3playa plans to have a MnG on Thursday at 6pm. I know some peeps here swing both, or all 3 ways ;) and may be planning on attending, but I was curious if there were any plans to have a Tribe version. There are def. some people here that I am interested in meeting personally, and it may weed out a few socks LOL
Any ideas, plans, rumors of a Darpa project underway that already addresses this?

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 6:32 PMShhhh.......Sail Man......if DARPA is involved, it's classified beyond yours or my security clearances. Try the second mountain range past the Granite Range, where Area 51 is.......
On the other hand, we need to start having a head count towards an on-playa meet-and-greet that's been hinted at before. There's a reason for meet-and-greets and that's to share what works, what doesn't, add names to faces you've met online, and have real "Tribe moments". So you don't give a flip? Neither did I last yeasr until I met some of the people here and began to change my tune. Now, I've met people from all over that I am really keyed into. I'm in.
Put your two cents in here. Where should we have it? What should we serve? And what kind of numbers can we expect?

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 6:43 PMWhere should we have it? someone with a placed theme camp might be best, but maybe I'm thinking inside the box. What should we serve? That backbone of the playa feed/drink: potluck. How many? Enough. -

Re: Brought to you by the letter 4
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 3:36 PMCrypto, the idea of a theme camp is good, infrastructure in place to host a good party, but I also have thought of the idea of descending upon BMIR, especially when Bobzilla is broadcasting. Maybe we could all take turn/join in on setting up tunes etc.
I'll be staying in Kidsville, maybe not THE place for a larger gathering, unless y'all plan on acting childish (LOL not that that would be a stretch for some of you ;) But maybe a good place for a smaller group, and I'd be open to that idea as well. Anybody else in a theme camp that may be interested in hosting? -

Re: Brought to you by the letter 4
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 4:57 PMSailMan;
Can't think of any conflicting events for Wednesday evening, although I'm sure there might be no matter which evening you pick. Bobzilla may remember if this is the Media Mecca night, I can't recall.
I like Wednesday and if Goatt wants to host and KK recommends him then I'd say take a vote. Someone will advise if it conflicts with another major event. -

I've gotten Lion, Kangaroo, Bear, Gator, Rattlesnake, Turtle to name a few for wild game parties we've thrown, a friend even brought raccoon pastry puffs :) -
-
Re: Brought to you by the letter 4
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 4:32 PMGoat sausage isn't half bad. Rattlesnake and turtle are a little bit on the gamey side, but you remove that taste with a nice vinegar-based marinade. Last raccoon chili I had we thinned out with a little bit of Crown Royal and sweet vermouth, and it was fine. Bear is a bit too greasy and stringy for my taste, and opossum is just stringy, though quite tender. 'Gator is a whole 'nother story, mes amis. It's sweet if you get it fresh. Rib meat is on the rubbery side, but the tail meat is just fine. Alligator - the OTHER white meat.
I had sea cucumber last year in Beijing, and it was rubbery. The correct procedure for cooking it actually involves cooking it for two entire days. If confronted with sea cucumber, my suggestion is to look for the Goodyear emblem on the side....... -

Never did eat a possum, but my mom killed one. It was on our porch. She took a ball peen hammer to it. Whacked the hell out of it. Half hour later it tried to crawl away, so she whacked the hell out of it again, especially the head. Half hour later... yep. She did finally kill the sucker.
Nope we didn't eat it. We had beans that night.
True story. Some time I'll tell ya bout when I caught me a pet pig in the hey field.

Re: Brought to you by the letter 4
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 7:05 PMGold guy, you'll find no argument from me on EITHER squirrel or wild duck. Also add pheasant to that list.
A man's life is not complete without trying pheasant under glass, a nice chardonnay, garlic mashed potatoes, and something positively SINFUL for dessert. It can be even more fun if you're dressed in a tux and accompanied by some sweet sexy young thing who would like nothing better than to skip the apertif for more important pastimes.
"Those were the days, my friend,
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance, forever and a day,
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose,
For we were young, and sure to have our way...........

Wed, July 1, 2009 - 4:27 PMWhoever decides to host this should put up a Tribe event with RSVPs to

The menu? BACON of course!!
And Huelll regarding the Circus buffet, the El Dorado buffet has
been *majorly* reworked. I ate there last year and it puts Circus
to shame. Note that Sat is more expensive. The Golden Flower
just east of Circus has great Viet/Thai/Chinese. That's probably
where I'll be Sat nite. -

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, July 30, 2009 - 9:28 AMI got both Tenderloins, and Sausage. I've done the tenderloins before in the crock pot, made a jambalaya that was most excellent. I originally planned to do something like that for the MnG but I think that may end up creating too much moop, plastic cups/bowls and spoons everywhere. Not to mention trying to get a big ole pot o'jambalaya from my camp to P-Cubes without spilling it. Instead, I will do the sausage, it's precooked so all I have to do is heat it up, and much easier/safer, to transport. Plus, with the toothpicks, and some elmers glue, we can build us a little man to burn when were done :) LOL
Rhino, that marinade thing is exactly what I was thinking and I have been searching the net for some ideas. Nothing yet has really tickled my fancy, so, do you or anybody else have any suggestions? Maybe something not just marinady :P but maybe something saucy as well, or in lieu of? -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, July 30, 2009 - 10:22 AMSail Man.
You are a friggin' rockstar, you know that? I most assuredly do not mean this gentleman people.tribe.net/rockstar77
who also happens to be a great human being, but a rockstar all of your own intent. You honor me. Thank you.
Sausage of 'gator? Now THAT sounds tasty. I suggest to you a marinade that will add something all its own to the meat. Because it's a reptile, then we do it just like they do down where I was raised, back in the hills of east Tennessee......and then we'll add a flavor that will put Justin Wilson to shame.
Please feel free to try it out before you get to the playa.
The first step is to get some apple cider vinegar (Heinz is a good brand)and pour it over the tenderloins in a covered container or bowl, just enough so that they'll soak it up slowly. You do this for a full day and you can refrigerate and cover it while you do. This is done to break down or weaken any cartilaginous or bone matter left attached. If you add a nip (one pinch)of red chili pepper at this stage, then it'll have a chance to soak in nicely.
Step 2........Pour off the vinegar, and throw it away. It's done its job. NOW, fill up (again, just enough so that the tenderloins will soak it up) with tequila. Cut up one small white onion (dice it) and add it to the marinade along with a half clove of garlic and a half cup of finely chopped cilantro. This will also be your BASTE when grilling.
Then, it's GRILLIN' time! Baste constantly, and serve when ready.
I call this the "tequila marinade", and it's great for shrimp, chicken, and turkey, too!
As a personal preference, similar to having white wine with fish and red wine with beef, I use bourbon marinades on beef and pork. Also emu.....the other red meat.
-
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, July 30, 2009 - 3:34 PMRockstar eh LOL
Rhino, I knew most def. that you would come through on some good marinade, and a tequila one to boot! Mmmmm, I cant wait to try it out. Gator of course not being as popular, not to mention common up here, something told me a Good Ole Southern gent ;) might just have something up his sleeve for a wee bit o'gator. I will try to remember to bring you a flyer from the butcher where I buy my exotic meats. I'll also have a variety of beef sticks to bring along. I believe my wife picked up venison, elk, and bear but I plan on going back once more at least to peruse they're freezer and see what else I can find. -

Thu, July 30, 2009 - 9:37 PMwell shit...! This is turnin' into a right royal dusty hoot! I'm a-leavin' for the playa on Monday, so my input here is goin' to be fairly nil in a few days. But carry on with your shinannigans anywho, and I look forward to seein' ya'll an' seein' what kind of beast you develop this lit'le meat 'n' greet into in the comin' weeks before ya'll are deployed homeward for another dusty week. M' camp an' I look forward to meetin' all ya'll.
Thanks for rentin' our bar for a bit...we'll send you the bill post event....

Yes, it's you that has the deep pockets, what with the horrific change in US-Canadian exchange rates. And let us not even mention the strike in Windsor. Why! I can even smell Canada from my hovel. ;P

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, July 30, 2009 - 10:49 PMokay, we'll split it. I'll take the 40%, you take the 60% since your dollar's worth being inappropriately propped up by the Fed. -

Fri, July 31, 2009 - 8:32 AM"let's send it to the Chinese"
How about sending OUT for Chinese?
Put me down for 1 from column A and 1 from column B with the hot and sour soup and pork fried rice.

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 7:53 PMStill on, folks? I hope so!
I'm on site right now, and I'll let you all know a secret: it's been raining (Still!). Okay, rain out here isn't the same as ever'where else, but there's been a modicum of moisture to the air! We've been told by senor weatherman that it'll stop in a few days, so cross your fingers! In the meantime, though you've all been a borin' lot the last seven days-What?! No new posts!-we at the Oasis hope to see you and your deep fried, grilled, baked, raw, or whatever roadkill at our little...well, Oasis, come Wednesday eve.
We expect a third of ever'one who's posted to arrive.
Go ahead, now, prove me wrong!!
See ya'll soon!
-goatt
p.s. the playa says 'hi!" -

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Fri, August 7, 2009 - 8:58 PM"Hi!" back to the playa.
:"though you've all been a borin' lot the last seven days-What?! No new posts!-"
Yeah, Goatt? You're not exactly a fireball yourself, dude, but I expect that's because you're hard at work gettin' things ready. Much appreciated. THANK YOU!
"whatever roadkill " - are you SURE? I could come up with just about ANYTHING. But I'll be nice. -

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 9:21 AMProcuring the Gator marinade items as we speak, or as in Goatt's case, as he toils incessantly upon the playa to prepare for our imminent arrival (yay!) Though I best hold off on the Tequila till departure day, lest it mysteriously vanish prematurely. Strange how that happens. ;) -

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 9:57 AMYou can always marinate shrimp in the same marinade......and serve to the family. The alcohol burns off, and it tastes wonderful.
-
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 10:36 AMShrimp are neither fished nor farmed sustainably. -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 12:25 PMYou sayin' that we're reducing the population of shrimp to the point that it is causing irreparable harm to the ecology? -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 12:32 PMI don't know if it's the population of shrimp that's the issue. For fishing there's from two to seven pounds of bycatch (non-shrimp) that's thrown back in the water and is dead. For aquiculture it's the same as salmon--those unoxigenated dead zones created by the feed and shrimp poop.
(hit's google for some quickee research)
Okay, I over-simplified. There are some acceptable shrimp choices.

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Tue, August 11, 2009 - 10:13 PMHey Goatt;
Since you're out there already, is there any chance you could take a photo for the newspaper? For the first time in years, we're doing a Gate Edition to receive when you come through the Greeters Station. We'd like to get a photo of the city as it's being built.
Of course a picture of the Man pavilion would be great but any good photo would be featured on the cover of the paper with proper credit to the photographer!
Send photo to articles[at]blackrockbeacon.org and tell us who took the photo.
Wow, really looking forward to this event. I'm bringing real Canadian bacon - I'm not really into road kill. Oh and some Canadian beer too. -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 7:34 AMI'll try to be there.

But Deb!! The Gator sausage will be done up in Rhino's own special marinade, surely you'd be game for that game ;P -

Turn in your bets! -

Wed, August 12, 2009 - 9:34 AMTake it to Thunderdome! Canadian Bacon vs. Gator Sausage.
I'll put up a six pack of good Canadian beer 'cause I know my butcher's bacon will be delicious. I even met the pig at the organic farm so I know where my bacon came from!
Gosh, it's anyone's guess where that Gator came from!
How 'bout it, Sail Man. Are you up for the challenge? -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 12:43 AMSail Man
You didn't put up your wager yet.
There is a question about cooking facilities at that camp so that we could grill bacon or gator. OR should we cook at our own camp and just wrap in foil to keep warm, run like mad to the P Cubed Oasis. Either way is fine, I think. Although someone may have to put a leash on Sail Man, he's easily distracted along the way.
PS sad news, I will be there but a little late. Two members of my camp are getting married at 6PM. I'd like to attend the service but then I'll head over to challenge Sail Man and his marinated gator so I can win ??? hmm, what?

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 9:27 AMDid someone actually hit the Gator with a car? Or is it farmed? -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, August 20, 2009 - 7:54 AMCrypto, they farm such critters nowadays.
Which is why the meat is increasingly tender. Nothing to do with genetic engineering, they just slaughter the alligators at a younger age.
Alligator. The OTHER white meat.

As opposed to us? At least until we've been on the playa for a few days eh?!
Oh joy! We are now leaving earlier Thursday instead of late Friday! Weeee! -

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 5:24 AMFor anyone interested in where I will be, for at least part of the time.
I will be with my airbrushes at Airbrush camp, Sin City. 7:00 & Esplanade.
I'll be airbrushing on clothes as well as bare skin.
Airbrushing the 'Tribe' symbol somewhere on their bodies would make it easier to recognize someone else from Tribe. -

Tue, August 25, 2009 - 8:58 PMYou know what? I'm not actually sure. I would imagine that I would be airbrushing for a good part of the time, since it is Airbrush camp and I seem to be the only other airbrush artist as far as I know. -

Wed, September 23, 2009 - 11:56 AMI wanted to send an overdue shout out to Goatt and P-Cube Oasis for hosting the first Tribe MnG, thanking them for their hospitality, and great view of the city :) Had a good time, got a real nice buzz on that helped me to wander the city/playa far afterwards and look at the pretty lights. ;) Me thinks next year will be better. -

Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 1:45 PM"Save for the sound of smacking lips the gator went quietly"
I call bullshit. There were the sounds of "mmmmmmm', and "oooooo----this is SO good."
Sail Man, you outdid yourself in making sure that gator was UBER-tasty. -
-
Re: Tribe Meet and Greet
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 9:00 PMAnd who supplied the marinade recipe, my good man? Hmmmmm? None other then yourself :) Seeing that gator doesnt roam round these here parts much (dont ask me about the reputed 10' python loose in our neighborhood right now), I had the forethought to ask and trust a good southern gent the proper marinade for such a delicacy.
Hmmm, what shall I make for next year? -
