The Great Playa Tea Party 2008

So I was thinking about the theme "the American Dream" and how far recent politics have taken us from the ideals our forefathers espoused. And then I thought of how Samuel Adams and others fought against an oppressive King George with the Boston Tea Party, and how Thomas Jefferson is quoted as having said (or written), "God forbid we go twenty years without a revolution." And I thought again about the theme, "The American Dream" and how that dream is being actively destroyed by the current administration.

Could it be possible for a group of us to have a Boston Tea Party, or a Playa Tea Party, in Black Rock City next year, to show that Our American Dream would include holding accountable an administration that has no regard for the Constitution of the United States, nor the ideals espoused within, nor the tradition of moving toward said ideals rather than away from them?

What would it look like? Would it include participants dressed as colonial era revolutionaries disguised as Native Americans? Obviously we have no ocean to throw the tea into, so I welcome ideas. Anyone who feels inspired by such an idea, please feel free to articulate freeform ideas in this thread. Much appreciated.

Well, what's our current "tea" in this culture?

What products are we addicted to in the USA? What are they charging super-high taxes and huge profit margins on? What product exploits others the most?

    OIL

And so how do we spill oil all over the Playa? By burning thousands of gallons of it like we just don't care. The sooner it runs out, the sooner we'll have to face facts, phase out of our car addiction, join in community, grow our own food, and live the life we all know we want.

This was the idea that got me excited about burning man again. It's not about politics, or specifics, it's about an idea, and that's saying "I have a say in my life, and I'm making full use of that right." That was what "no taxation without representation" was about at its' core, and that is what taking back our country, and taking back our festival, is about.

A "tea party" held on the playa relative to the "Boston Tea Party" as a revolutionary catalyst would almost certainly have the effect of a fart in space. No one would notice. Do it at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC and you might have more of an effect. Take it to the mother fucker's face day in and day out, maybe you'll make a dent. Do it in the middle of nowhere surrounded by a choir of the converted and you'll just be another "performance" cloying for attention.

Great idea! We don't have an ocean, but we are pretty good at burning things. I'd say burn actual tea, or boxes that look like antique cases of tea. Kind of a re-enactment, in costume, with flames instead of water. Too bad La Contessa is gone - would've been an ideal stage...

I think we should express our angst and anger against the current oppressive fascist regime by going out to the middle of the desert with 45,000 of our closest friends and throwing a big blinky rave with lots of shit on fire, and alcohol and titties!

    That'll show em.

    Punks.

      Hmmm, great idea!

My declaration is more oriented towards the BMORG. I don't think of them as facist, or even greedy, just not very good listeners, who have allowed themselves to fall into the trap that most movements or great ideas fall into. So, I'm going to declare my independence of the BMorg, and use their infrastructure to do my own thing. What that is, I don't know yet.
