Hey Harriet,

So we arrived on Saturday afternoon with 3 of us on the list and 2 not. They checked our ID's and saw that 2 of the peeps were not on the list, so they had us hang out a bit while they radioed around and did the standard search. Our Gate person looked hot and tired while she waited to get the word from whomever was in charge so I offered her a cold Tecate. She said it was the first thing she'd been offered and thanked us, and then got the word that we were good to go as we had more people in the RV who were on the list than not. And she said it was largely a matter of attitude and good energy. The jackasses who got all up in arms over it were the ones who were detained in "Lot D" just off to the side.

So yeah....

Sorry I ruined Burning Man for everyone. My bad.

Its perfectly legal and lovely.
BMorg isn't paying for the whole damn desert you know (that would cost more), they only paid for their tiny little section of it.
I say fucking BRAVO to all those camping outside the BM perimeter... if its outside the public closure zone (which doesn't look that big anyway)...fucking Right On.
I think its wrong that part of the road is off limits (if you wanted to just drive past the event into the desert).
How does that "fuck up BM"?? How does it "fuck with the staff"??

I showed up Sunday 08/27 at 16:00 PST. I had been fretting on the drive out from Oakland about how I would talk my way in through the gate. I had a few names to drop.

I waited for ninety minutes, left calf exhausted from working the clutch in first, before I was waved into will-call. Will-call went flawlessly. then I was back in line for another 45 minutes while the gate guy, working his ass off, ignored me and the line of cars behind me, trying to reach the gate.

By then my nerves were relaxed. I had a story prepped for entry, but while waiting two hours to show my ticket, I had seen no cars turning around. It was obvious they were letting everyone in.

When I made gate at 18:00 sunday, the guy looked at my ticket, looked in my trunk, and waved me along. Then the greeters did me the favor of not delaying me, and I was in.

The BORG plays its info loosely. I was waved in on Sunday without even being asked what camp I was in. Their bullshit and doublespeak about EARLY ENTRY RESTRICTIONS tires me.

I'd like to hear some other early entry stories for 2006/

I don't fucking claim to know it all. I just wrote a letter to the BLM and posted my response because I'm trying to help out. Remember that? Remember helping each other out? That was the biggest thing that moved me from my first Burning Man. How much we take care of one another. Because regardless of the info I've posted, you WILL have a bunch of people who show up who are not on the EA list. And your answer seems to be, "Fuck off, someone should have told you. Haul your ass back to Reno and we'll see you when the gates open".

In my posts about this, I have advised against being anything but cordial to the BLM staff or LEO's who show up. I have reminded people to handle their own MOOP. I have only given suggestions that we're Ok'd by the BLM.

Well, I tend to agree with you regarding getting as close to the entrance as possible. The only thing is, I don't think you can baja off of 8 Mile Road (the entrance to the Burn) and just drive south a 1/2 mile. If this is the same entrance as years past, there tends to be a good bit of scrub brush as well as a temporary fence, (if I recall). So I *think* the only way to get that close would be to actually enter on 3 Mile Road and then drive up toward the gate(ish) area.

I ahve no idea, but rather doubt, that the Public Closure Area will be marked off in any convenient to see way. I'm sure if you are camping inside of it, a BLM Ranger will come along and let you know. In fact, if we do get turned away, I may just ask if there are any BLM Rangers that can point us or lead us outside of the PCA and then set up.

I have no idea how this is going to turn out. I guess I'll find out in about 36 hours.

A friend & i were planning on heading out early, till he bunked out yesterday for lack of $$, now ive been online all afternoon looking for a ride-
i would still love to get out on the playa early, after all, its only one week out of the whole year, if i can prolong it a couple days, i will-
so then, is it sounding like 12 mile rd's gonna be the place, or just as close as we can get to the entrance? that would make more sense to me, seeing as most people will be at the gate when they find out they cant get in, and will have no fucking clue about the camp a few miles away. plus, if we want the real tailgate party to happen, better be where we can be found by anyone who's never even seen this thread.
People like me who get rides in with no car can then persuade their ride to drive back a half mile and drop them off, but if you are all up 12 mile rd, there's no way thats ever going to happen.
a couple more points: we'll be first in line when the gates open,
and we'll also be within possible walking distance of the gate keepers' portapotties.
seriously, whats the fun in a pre-party if we all have to hold our asses for two days?

Oh, and on that note, anyone know of a ride from berkeley? or have room for me and modest gear & a unicycle? i can pitch in for some gas...

Ok, so here's the most recent e-mail exchange between Jamie Thomas at the BLM and I.

I said:

"Hi Jamie,

Actually I do have one follow up question. On the pdf you sent, there's the Public Closure Area and the Event Area. The Public Closure Area states that fom 8/26 to 9/4, you cannot camp there unless you are a ticket holder.

Well, the issue I described in my original e-mail is about getting into the event itself and people not being on the Early List, (i.e. getting in before 12:01 AM on Monday). Those people not on the list ARE ticket holders, they're just not on the Early Arrival list. Does that mean that they would be able to camp within the Public Closure Area until the gates opened, (after which they could access the Event Area)? Or should anyone who cant' get in until Monday still camp outside the Public Closure Area.

Thank you for your help on this. This new policy is causing a bit of last minute scrambling."

She replied:

"It means that ticket holders can camp inside the EVENT AREA (within the larger Public Closure Area), but that no one, including ticket holders, can camp in the closure area OUTSIDE the Event Area during the closure period.
The reason we included the phrase "except for ticket holders" in the description in the legend was to make it clear that ticket holders INSIDE THE EVENT AREA were exercising a permitted privilege.

Jamie"

So there you have it. We may NOT camp in the Public Closure Area until the gates open, but we CAN camp outside of it, which is kind of what I assumed anyway. So the idea of giong about a 1/2 mile south of the entrance road (or wherever you like outside of that blue zone on the map) is fair game.

And once again, I would recommend printing out both the map and the e-mail exchanges that I've posted just to have on hand. Better to have some manner of paper trail than not.

Knowing the playa quite well, I have to say the 12 Mile access road would be my choice as it leads you into the magnificent deep playa and you can really appreciate how vast it is.

Plus you are headed right at The Black Rock most of the time, just like World Land Speed setter, Andy Green was when he broke the sound barrier - although he was over on the east side.

So camping there is free; no permits required. Quite an experience I'd say, even if you are on the Early List.

Although the knowledge that this area, and the 3 Mile access road area, are available it must still be a pisser for Theme Camp construction crews to know that they losing valuable time because of a 'technicality.'

I assume that many of the old timers will innocently arrive without knowledge of the tighter regs. Would anyone like to guess how many folks will be affected by this? Remember, just ONE unlisted person in a vehicle is cause for denial of access.

In the past, just knowing the name of your theme camp and having your camp manager's email printout was enough proof to get you in, and this system worked very well.

Ok, back to business. I just looked at the map again and using their legend, it looks like if you go a quarter mile south of the road that will take you into the event (just after you turn off of County Road 34, that is), you will be out of the Public Closure Area.

Again, we have a team of samurai working on posting said map, (or hosting it somewhere for greater clarity), but I wanted to give people updates until that happens.

Honest to Christ, ANOTHER thread?!

Yep, the other one was filled with just too damn much speculation and crap being hurled like an all Chimp shot by shot remake of the Animal House "food fight" scene.

SO! In teh other thread, I was directed to a BLM e-mail address. This is what I wrote to them:

"Hello,

Due to a change in the BM policy this year, it seems that there will be several people who thought that they were going to be able to get in before Monday who now cannot. Are there places nearby the event, but outside its boundaries, that people are able to camp until the gates open on Monday?
And if so, where would we acquire a permit? Thank you in advance for any insights you can provide."

And here is their response:

"Tim, you do not need a permit to camp anywhere on BLM administered public lands in the vicinty of Gerlach. You cannot have open fires, but can use a propane or similar campstove. The only prohibition on the camping is that you cannot camp within the Burning Man Closure Area or remain in the same location longer than 14 days. I am attaching a map that indicates where the closure is. I hope this helps."

This came from Jamie_Thompson@nv.blm.gov

I am posting the map that she sent along that shows exactly where the Burning Man Closure Area is, and what lies outside of it. That is, if I can post pdf files or figure out a way to convert them to jpegs.

So now, I FULLY expect everyone who is not on the Early List to camp VERY near the event and party their faces off until midnight Sunday.
