Is it just me or do most of these posts suck?
Afterall, shouldn't the topics at least remotely touch upon BM?
I look at these posts and wonder if something came in the middle of the night
and sucked everyone's brain matter out of their heads....
Has it always been like this? Silly rants and raves....
  • No it's not just you, they mostly suck. There are rare jems from time to time, but for the most part I often find myself asking if I should just dump it off my tribes.

There are other off-shoot tribes that will provide you with what-ever your looking for, but this one has been "what you see" for some time now.
    • Both of you are right. There's a lot of goof off stuff here. People come here to have fun mostly, that's why it looks the way it is.
I'm guilty sometimes too. Start a decent thread and very soon it will be populated with typical stupid shit.
Right, the thing is to start your own tribe and advertise it here.
  • I have to agree with you, you suck.

Why are you trying to define what this list is or does?
I love the stupidity and the beauty that is found at Burning Man.
I love learning things and just standing there scratching my head and balls saying "what the F#ck is this".
Actually it is the "What the F#ck" moments that inspire me the most.
What sucks is all the newbies without a brain, who try telling others what Burning Man should be.
Don't push me or i"ll bring back the mindless thread and talk about my morning farts.
    • hooray huell! Bm is all random connections and thoughts and that is the way it should be! What's that awful odor?
      • >What's that awful odor?

No doubt Moist pup's compulsive need to shit all over the forum with his inane, banal threads that are funny only to him.
        • >No doubt Moist pup's compulsive need to shit all over the forum with his inane, banal threads that are funny only to him.<

          DAMN IT!!!
Don't forget about that @$$ Hole Huelll.
He is like a pimple on your butt you want to ignore and is a pain in the @$$ but deep down you know that zit is part of you.
          • Thinking is too hard! Someone carve out my brains with a butter knife, I'm done with them!

I hesitate to call this generally controling attitude negativity, but SHIT!

Which is it people? Free flow of associations, or home-owners dues?
Does everyone here have to paint their house the same color?
I'm with Huelll, I'm leaving a fresh new steaming pile of elephant crap
on my lawn every morning, and the rest of you will just have to deal with it.

So, if threads about the intricacies of BM culture as the old homies see it are boring
in some of or opinions, why so?

If the forum is to be constrained into some avenue to please the old diehards, what shall it be?

Instead of just complaining that you don't know what is going on,
why not inspire with an alternative that is closer to what you desire to be here for you?

"Make this for me to read, so I can stay in my old rut.."
"Be more specific.... what does vanilla taste like again?"
"Somebody refresh me, I forgot ages ago..."
            • I know that more posts by new people not talking about BM specific things you have done in the past
makes it harder to find that feeling you had years ago with the tighter knit group who knew you well,
but it seems your only option is to accept how it is now, or stage a coup, toss everyone out, and remake
              it like old times.

In a huge tribe like this, some distraction is going to happen, no matter what the flavor.
If you think you can't find what you want to engage in here, try kicking it with the sharks
in the Politics tribe, or some piranha-infested venue like that. Many of them try to hunt
              down grandma for breakfast.
            • >I'm leaving a fresh new steaming pile of elephant crap on my lawn every morning<

Just be sure to put a little sign out explaing that it is 'Art' so the rest of the world won't have to decide for themselves. 'Course if you do lable it, some shithead will probably just want to tag it and then where are you? Off in the world of uncontrolled, noncooperative, creation...fuck that!
              • I love spinning nonsence (I was brought up on a steady diet of Lewis Carroll) and at times this tribe is a great place for that--it's certainly got members who can pick up my nonsense, add a fillip and re-spin it in the new form. Those kind of partners are rare in this world. all too often I get a blank stare.
Is that burningman? Not exclusively. Not even predominently. But somehow a "spinning nonsense tribe" doesn't seem like a viable option. (Well, okay the Assholes tribe does do okay at that. But even that's an offshoot of this tribe, even if most of us don't come around here no more.)
In so far as this tribe is a collection of persons who have some sort of relationship to burningman and to each other through burningman, then the range of topics is potentially quite broad.
                *insert arguements about moderation here.*
But maybe I'll leave again. I'll miss Sockrates and fko's and some others, but here we are having the argument about how we should post again. Don't know how many times I can go through that.
                • Crypto, I love you.
I don't say it often enough. I know (think) we have never met in person, but I think about you even when I am away from tribe. I worry that you are not happy and that the pain you experience will discourage you from being with us. Maybe it's becuase I've known people who have gone through simular tragety as you and feel helplessly out of range to do anything about it, but your wit andity and creativity and flirty style are priceless to me.

You are fused with this amazing thing that happened to me

Some months ago, I wanted to wipe myself from tribe (and the internet altogether). After years of online artscholling, community building and art activism, I cam to the very discouraging realization that the majority of people involved in these internet circles are self dominated by entertainment, the shock and awe of the "new" and their own self importance. I've tried for years to abandon my own self promotion and instead tried to persue only the activisim of "awareness". I fully recognise the irony that being a character feeds the character but I thought, at least I have been trying to be ore than an ego. be a part of something bigger than the normal culture identity. Define myself through my activities in something worthwhile.

This al seems impossible until that day you decided to get flirty with the tribe. Your example not only inspired me to see past the discouraging volume of narrow activities here on tribe, but it brought me closer to others people whom have given me freidship, comradery and more importantly, the example that many of my values are shared and worth engagement.

It was you who gave me, a guy who still has his legs, a litlle renewed faith in people.

I can never thank you enough. I can only try to be a part of that thing you created for me and the others I know whos lives are better becuase you are in it.

                  oxoxo

  • Is it just me or do most of these posts suck?

ans> The post do not suck, you just have a perspective that only allows you to see how these post interfere with your personal motives, objectives and values.

Afterall, shouldn't the topics at least remotely touch upon BM?

ans> Very Valid point but who's definition of Bunringman? Yours, mine, Larry Harvey? Is burningman the week in the dessert? Is Burningman the event or the people who produce it, or the people who participate? Is it entertainment only, or is there radical expressive philosophy that spreads into the day to day? Is it art, or entertainment? Is it community or celebration? what exactly has nothing to do with Burningman if we are the ones who both build and live whithin it's scope?

I look at these posts and wonder if something came in the middle of the night
and sucked everyone's brain matter out of their heads....

Ans > In the Beging of Burningman tribe, all of tribe was alive with a spark of creativity, wit and free expression. Many people flooded here from Freindster and My space becuase they were free here. Free to speak their minds without censorship, ovebearing eliteism to pop culture thinking and a general sense of invitation to be who you are or want to be.

The only thing that has changed since that time is the growing number of members who consistantly try to dominate the tribe with control. These people are agressive about imposing their intolerance and "taste" upon the free colective. Do this, say this, act this way. Indeed this tribe has changed. It has drawn people who have yet to learn to accept the self resposible nature that comes with open social freedoms.
    Tolerance is golden.
    Acceptance is enlightened.
    Appreciation is nirvanva.
    Love is salvation.

If you let go of your fear of unseriousness you might find the terms of endearment that rest in what you now see as silly rants and unrelated topics.
There is something more personable happening in the snark and wayward conversations our brothers and sisters offer.
Many of us are conscious ativist in our war against overseriousness.

If you can't see it here, drop some acid or meditate on the seriousness of life.
I am confident you will find that life is spent in ironic juxtaposition.

You can never trust life until you practice letting go of your desire to control it.

  • It may suck that Burning Man's decision to place an emphasis on driving regulations is in response to complaints, but in a temporary community for bicycles and pedestrians, rules need to be developed and enforced for everyones safety.

    tribes.tribe.net/bmmv/phot...2e725f39ed

Many folks planning to make the sojourn to Black Rock are asking lots of questions and seeking clarification around the myriad issues that make coming to the event both challenging and rewarding. One of the most repeated requests for clarification has to do with issues related to mutant vehicles and the current policies regarding registration and approval of them.

In response to the growing number of safety problems of vehicles being operated in an unsafe manner during the event and the complaints generated as a result, the driving regulations are strictly enforced. Note that these regulations do not reflect a mandate imposed by LEOs (law enforcement organizations). Nor do they represent collaboration with LEOs by the Black Rock Rangers. The decision to place a greater emphasis on long standing regulations is in response to the innumerable complaints expressed by participants both during the event as well as input submitted throughout the year around issues of safety. We're appealing to a higher instinct here folks. Simply put the rules for driving on the playa have not changed. The amount of emphasis being placed on those regulations has. It is about taking responsibility for ourselves when we need to.

In their purest form mutant vehicles serve as a form of mobile interaction with a great number of participants and contribute dramatically to the surreal experience which many of us experience each year during the event. They are "A thread that binds Black Rock City together. They are 'visual sculpture on wheels': radically, stunningly beautiful... and are core to the culture and community of Burning Man."

Last year over 500 Mutant Vehicles were licensed and around 300 static art pieces were placed on the playa.

What is the tipping point for creative emphasis on mobile vs static expression at an event designed for pedestrians and bicycles?
