Re: R.I.P. Anybeat
Thu, May 10, 2012 - 9:03 AMJust an outsider's perspective ...
I cautiously approached the site, and am very glad I did. I gather a lot of people put some really personal stuff there. And now that personal stuff may or may not be sold to the highest bidder.
I'm about to can an online project but I never collected any data at all. Nonetheless, the way I'm going to do it is to delete it. The external view (e.g. the website itself, not the databases) may have been archived somewhere, but when it's gone, nobody will get the raw data.
It's not clear to me what Anybeat is doing with the data it collected. I wouldn't doubt the e-mail address I used is part of the package they're selling. I have no guess as to what happens to the rest of it.
Fuck you, I love you,

Re: R.I.P. Anybeat
Fri, May 11, 2012 - 10:15 AMI was on Anybeat, and it had some promise. Not as vital as Tribe back at its peak, but more interesting than G+, and less annoying than FB.
My experience with being online in a variety of venues has been pretty positive. My attitude towards social sites, including this one, is to never post what would harm my marriage, my family, or my job. Social sites cannot be trusted to keep things confidential, even if their intentions are good. Bugs, laws, and malcontent workers all provide enough holes to drive a very large truck through. If you really have a secret, then don't fucking post it!
Keep your expectations low, and you will be less surprised when bitten in the butt.

Re: R.I.P. Anybeat
Sat, May 12, 2012 - 9:57 AMCurrently the folks on AnyBeat that really enjoyed it are looking for alternatives--I suggested Tribe!!! Wouldn't that be interesting if clunky old Tribe got a sudden influx of new members?
By the way--who owns Tribe these days??? -

Sat, May 12, 2012 - 5:24 PMIn Nov. 2008, a group of long-time tribe members formed a partnership called New Systems Associates (NSA) and announced that they would be taking over management of tribe.net as well as provide capital for upgrading the hardware and rewriting the code base.
