I watched some, the burn specifically. On the radio broadcast, with the circling camera. Bicycles, plenty of bicycles, and wandering fashionistas. Good music. What a town, huh? Maybe some day. All the same, I hope you all had fun. I recently noticed that the forum was public again, so I thought I would say hello. Good people here, where's FKO? Rollicking good times. The juices of creativity, and you all have plenty. So, hello again. Let's talk geology, Rhino. OT, OT, OT, almost forgot that. I will not mention AMSU. Shit!

I've been splitting before the burn... any others?

        Split before the burn?
No,no, dear boy, that's just when the party gets started again!
The build up, and tear down are usually more fun then the event itself.

That magical red snake crawling down the 447 tells me that the citizens are going away, and we can get back to work. Or is it fun? What do you call work, when it is what you want to be doing, anyway?

The playa is nice, after everyone is gone. A couple of days picking up moop is a really good thing. Everyone should try it, sometime. Very contemplative.

I love arriving on the playa early... but at times it's a bitch, like when a storm blows through and there aren't any tents or RVs to act as a wind break.

And as much fun as the burn is... after being away from the love of my life for about 10 days... getting home to her beats the burn hands down any day. Now if she were with me at BM, that would be a different story... it would be the best of both worlds.

That would be cool... but I wouldn't hold my breath that she is going any time soon.. but I did go to the NY Decom with her... and that was lots of fun!

My group of friends aren't interested in going even if you paid them a million bucks... well maybe for a million...

Drag an unwilling spouse to Burning Man, for a million bucks?

Well, that depends. How much does a new wife cost?

As much as you are willing to pay for her. In your love for her, of course. They really don't care about money, they want security.

Look, can't I just go to Temple of Atonement, and get a girl off the rack?

exsqueeze me? I guess you could, but then you'd have to tame her. That may mean serious business. Depends on the girl.

Who is that temple dedicated to?

I thought it was a really good year. How did you like the radio broadcast?

There was the country song about the gun. I like that. Said something about God's justice. God knows justice. And it was all twangy. The burn was nice to watch, and more than I expected, though of course I'm sure the pyrotechnics have become more and more spectacular over the years, but I was surprised at the level of technical display.

I would have watched more, but I was too busy writing.

Hmmmm. I though the man burn was like watching paint dry. First of all there were too many fireworks for my taste. If I want fireworks I can go to Vegas. Fireworks before the main fireball is fine but after the main fire ball, I'm a purist, give me a clean burn. Explosions are fine but no more fireworks.

Then it took FOREVER. I have no knowkledge of what technically happened and I know how hard the pyro team works. It looked like the base didn't catch on fire in the main explosion but the man did and fire burns up I think?

I was in the studio at BMIR and I was joking with the field team asking "what color are the flames now", "have you taken a temperature reading" "what's the hippie situation out there". Finally I called them on the radio and said "look this is like listening to golf" throw it back to the studio, I'll wrap up, throw on the 8 hours of weird music we had picked out for post burn and we can go get drunk (or more drunk).

I watched from Adapt. We were sitting there joking: Look, Cialis man--he never goes down."

Yeah, I'm aware that 've shared that bon mot wth this tribe. YOu think it's easy to be startlingly original all the time?

Bobzilla, I heard a rumor after the burn that the man base was thicker than it had ever been, supporting a lot of weight. Hence it took forever to burn through and collapse. Perhaps someone can confirm this?

Yeah, I can shed a little light on this topic.
This year, Bob the Builder made the Man support out of really thick structural lumber.
In order to get it to burn on time, he drilled a series of chimney holes at the top of the post.
Unfortunatly, his plan really didn't work out.
The wood was too thick, there wern't enough holes in the wood, and the 10 gallons of diesel fuel that was supposed to go inside the post, never made it.

In hindsight, there really is no question that the Y chromasome could have been build in a diffrent manner.
Instead of solid 2X12's with some puny hole drilled in the top, he could have made it out of 2x4's and plywood. Just as strong, less sheer bulk.

You should have seen Bob, the next day. Hot enough to fry an egg on. He is normally a fairly calm guy. Not then. He feels just horrible about it, and has taken a vow that nothing like this will ever happen again.

I hope that sheds some light on the subject.

Zaius, I doubt it. Not that I really know what you're talking about. Is the man now composed of all the chromosomes? How is that put together? Chromosomes look like x's. Shall we link to it? What does the Y chromosome look like? A "Y", or a "y"? Is it that simple? You know, it's a big question mark, that "Y". But yeah, you can see it. And I'm not talking about chromosomes any more.

I haven't seen much discussion about the man taking so long to burn here. From my viewpoint, on the front row around 8, the man took a godawful long time to begin disintegrating. When he did, just a chunk fell down. By that time, the crowd was on its feet and people were starting to dart forward or try to.
The rangers on the front line were starting to bail water with a thimble. What looked kind of dangerous at the time was the amount of wood still standing and ready to fall. The crowd finally surged forward and the rangers just gave up. Then after a goodly amount of people had congregated around the base, some big pieces fell to the ground. From my standpoint it looked like the potential for some folks to get nailed by flying chunks of burning lumber looked real. Seemed like it came off okay though regardless.
