This is from a blog of a guy that LIVES right across from the year round Burning Man ranch fifteen miles outside of Gerlach and is given free "in and out" passes to attend each year and KNOWS key people that run Burning Man PERSONALLY. So I would not take his casual mention of three deaths and a child abandonment at the even as a mere RUMOR.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 2:43 PM"In spite of the fact that it was a particularly hot (90 to 100 degrees), crowded (est. 48 - 65 thousand people), and dangerous year (three deaths, one child abandonment), I enjoyed Burning Man 07 greatly."
Neet blog, but how am I supposed to take his counts seriously when he was way off with the attendance figure? -

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 3:42 PMI don't usually visit Tribe at all except to get the low-down on all things Burning Man and was surprised at the generalized dismissal of the idea that more than one person died/was killed at burning (and no mention at all of the child abandonment). So I thought I'd contribute. I've only been to Burning Man once. Loved it.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 3:14 PMHmm. Okay. He lives very close to the event, he has a free pass to go in and out of the event, and he knows some "key people that run Burning Man." Okey doke, but he could still be passing along a rumor. What were these three deaths? Where does that information come from? What data does he have about a child abandonment? Or could this have been a rumor?
I'm not dismissing him out of hand, just asking reasonable followup questions before I consider this news. There have been a LOT of rumors about what happened at Burning Man. -

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 3:39 PMI'm sorry I haven't invested a kajillion hours in building up tribe.net friends. I have this strange thing called FRIENDS IN THE REAL WORLD and a production company that takes up a lot of my time. Anyway. I provided his blog. And I happen to know this guy is a completely STICKLER for facts. But I don't blame you for needing more "proof" but hey, is it that inconceivable that things might escape news reporting when possibly detrimental to IMAGE? Oh and now THIS is a rumor with less support but I HAVE heard that they ALSO have yet to identify they guy that hung himself. -
-
"is it that inconceivable that things might escape news reporting when possibly detrimental to IMAGE?"
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 4:28 PMYes. But that doesn't mean every rumor is true. I'm sure this man is an honest and reputable fellow with a nice blog. Even so, what were the cases? If you peruse these topics you will see rumors that there were 5 deaths or 3 deaths and varying numbers of injuries.
(Was that tree counted in the death toll? Hey, did you hear Christian Bale was there and he killed some guy? And what about the race riot and the flying saucer that landed and the aliens that got out and the martian mariachi band jumped out and played a set? Oh, there's even a crazy rumor some guy burned the man early. And some say that on that night, a dark entity ATE THE MOON!) -
-
Re: "is it that inconceivable that things might escape news reporting when possibly detrimental to IMAGE?"
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 11:04 PM<<the martian mariachi band jumped out and played a set?>>
I thought the cover of "Dust in the Wind" a little over-the-top, but I've heard worse at the Viper Room.
I agree that the fellow keeps a good and useful blog, but I don't see any documentation. This sounds more like a local guy authoritatively quoting local gossip, which may or may not be the goods.
It's rather simpleminded to conflate skepticism about some unconfirmed report with refusing to believe there weren't any deaths at BM. Playa scuttlebutt was putting the 2007 death count at FIVE before the festival was even over!

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 3:41 PMUm . . . what exactly constitutes a child abandonment? Everyone packed up and went home, and when the dust settled, there was an unclaimed kid sitting there? Or was it found in a box at Playa Info? I mean, kids do go missing during the event, it's a very real problem, and then they are reunited with their parents, with much crying and fervent promises from said parents never to be so irresponsible again. So if this incredibly well-informed guy who knows all the secrets just happened to be around during one of those brief worries when folks were looking avidly for a lost child, he could well have gotten the impresison that the kid was really truly gone. Same thing if he was a bystander when the kid was found first and the parents hadn't shown up yet.
As to the two mystery deaths that no one heard about because the evil black ops wing of the org covered them up to protect the giant chest of gold that Larry Harvey has buried under Bruno's. Yep, absolutely. Just like every year. Carry on with that, as you were. Neat how all of these mystery deaths, mutilations, alien abductions and such never make the news, postings by friends on Tribe, missing posters around town, or anything. That chest full of gold must be very, very large indeed to pay off so many people. Odd then that they couldn't hush up the few legitimate deaths that do occur. Why the disparity, ya reckon? I'm sure there's a good, well thought out reason that some guy who has no firends, wears a tinfoil hat, and lives on a ranch in Gerlach can elucidate for us. -

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 3:44 PMOK maybe I will actually do a little bit of research into public records and get back to you! And as for the kid I HEARD not just a few hours but a week with
no parental identification or return but then, wow, that is so NEGATIVE it just CAN'T be true, right? -
-
Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 4:04 PMThe playa is a rumor mill that works overtime, and some of the rumors are persistent. The suicide was known to a number of people, and has been discussed on several recent threads. What little I know indicates that it was handled with sensitivity.
I've not heard about the child abandonment. But when one child went missing for a few hours last year before the Uchronia burn the whole city was asked to help find him, the gates were closed, and every available ranger was mobilized. I don't know why a similar effort would not have been made this year to find the parents.
The BMorg is composed of humans. There are egos involved and there are mistakes. But this whole "evil empire" attitude strikes me as somewhat delusional.
Please don't join the conspiracy crowd. All available positions are filled and there is a waiting list.

Oh right, the ol' Force of Authority by Proximity argument or How It Came to Be True Because I Didn't Want to Verify By Checking Actual Informed Sources.
There's a meeting every day on the playa with county, state and federal law enforcement officials with members of the various departments at Burningman. During those meetings information is sent out regarding any and all issues that are of primary import *and* which could potentially put the event into jeopardy. Sexual assaults, domestic violence and child endangerment are THE top three of a larger list.
Though there were reports of lost children and one young adolescent during the event there was never an abandoned child. There was one suicide.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 11:17 AMI overheard a Ranger talking to some people saying she found a four-year-old wandering the open playa. When asked where its parents were, it said, "My mom told me to meet her in Center Camp in a couple hours." or something like that. That might be the case.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 4:50 PMOK TELL Y'ALL WHAT I'M GONNA DO! I've been wanting an excuse to get up to Reno ANYWAY. I got friends in the real world who are COPS.
I will get the 411 on where the public records would be found (they gotta be there if its true...burning man is not the mafia!)
IF I FIND ANY EVIDENCE OF DEATHS AT BURNING MAN (BESIDES THE SUICIDE) I WILL POST THE PUBLIC RECORDS ON SMOKING GUN.COM AND HERE FOR YOU TO PERUSE AT LEISURE. Here is my caveat. Burning Man does NOT consider demises OUTSIDE the Black Rock City GATES as technically occurring AT Burning Man and I agree to that. For example, a car accident on the WAY to or FROM Burning Man just doesn't count. However. If some one is taken FROM BM by ambulance and listed as DOA. It is NOT CLEAR THEN WHERE IT OCCURRED. If the guy or gal shows no vital signs LEAVING Burning Man and ends up DOA or even D after a short time. I call that, well, newsworthy don't you? IF I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING I WILL HUMBLY POST HERETO AND ADMIT AS MUCH!
Now I have to go get some work done...OH AND BY THE WAY I have a TribeNet "FRIEND" NOW! Woooohooooooo! -
-
Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 4:57 PMI'd also be interested in knowing incidents where someone sustains injuries on the playa that directly result in their death. Someone leaving in an ambulance and arriving DOA at the hospital qualifies as at least *relevant* dontcha think?
-
Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 5:02 PMI'm still unclear on why it matters at the moment. Right after burning man every year we get various reports and rumors of how many deaths, how many this, how many that. And every year those numbers start out wrong. And every year the stories eventually settle out and the true numbers are what we are left with.
I just don't get what this thread was started for, other than maybe to add to the mix of rumors until we get the solid info.
Oh, and you said something about the suicide not being identified? He has already been identified by many of his personal friends as a young man from Colorado, I believe his name is Jerm, and I have not seen a last name yet. I'm not sure of the status of his "legal identification" as in by a family member...but he is not an unknown in the community.
But I ask again...at this point, so soon after the event, what does it matter?

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 8:49 AMWild West - I hope you get this before you are in Reno.

Good luck.
Rumors abound and corporations cover up with loopholes so their benefactors/customers and money can keep coming in. -

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 8:55 AMI heard that there were 57K tickets issued from someone who is a regional contact. I also heard that several thousand of those were not sold, but given away to corporations and many to artists, etc.
Is it true? Who the fuck cares.
There was more than 50K people there. No question.
Over 60K? I'd buy that.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 5:27 PMSee, why on earth would anyone go through the bother of dragging a kid all the way out to Burning Man, just to leave it there?
Why not just abandon it at home, where it's less likely to be noticed? Perhaps at Burning Man, you think your kid will have cooler adoptive parents when someone finds the box that says "free to good home" with the spawn in it?
....or maybe someone got so sick of their kid whining and kicking the back of the seat going "are we there yet? I want to ride the art car shaped like a dragon now, and go down the slide, and have a snow cone. ARE WE THERE YET?"..... that they just left the little fucker there, not being able to imagine another hours-long drive along 447 with the kid's GameBoy batteries gone dead. -

Sounds like a rumor to me
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 6:24 PM...and, for what it's worth (without sounding like a dick measurer), I've been out there longer, lived closer, and know more "key" people, than Jason, so there (sticks out tongue while stretching cheeks and making a thpphthhptht sound)!

Also, I know this guy Jason. He does not live in Gerlach, or even on his ranch. He lives in the bay area and visits his ranch once and while. He is also on of the five people (with Mike Stewart, who burned La COntessa) that tried to shut down Burning Man in 2003 by making false complaints. -

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Wed, September 12, 2007 - 7:47 PMShooter always comes up with a good angle but even if the blogger in question were to be in LOVE with the event, taking the time to read his blog you'll quickly note that he just moved to the ranch in June. No matter his relation to the event itself, he mentions it only in passing and is mostly consumed by the day to day of getting things up and running. I noted that he rhapsodizes a bit about the "freedom" he's feeling living in the desert which to me simply means he's never done it before. He's also never seen a yurt before this year.....I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to his "involvement" in BM. -

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 12:20 PMDelicious Clint,
My attorney advised me to avoid BM this Season, as we knew that arson was a probable outcome of the event after Larry Harvey gave the finger to so many workers and most of our community, and he was so lazy he failed to even renew the license for the Burning Man trademark. So, I don't feel like any one stepped on my toes. I am just glad I was not there to be blamed.
Metric did bring up a good point--do people really tally all the deaths related to other large events? I think not if they occur outside the event or it's parking lot. Besides that, one of the reasons I like the Burning Man event is people die there. You never know when some art is going to kill you. BM wasn't Disneyland, like it is now, when people used to read their tickets that clearly state you might die attending this event.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 9:07 AMSo the suicide, the heart attack and Steve Fossett.
I think we can find at least one child who was abandoned by their bf, gf, tf or whoever for a better looking one at BM. Since we are all the child of someone(s) I'd say that it's a fair statement.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 12:11 AMGotta love the blogs - there were some kinds who would probably have been better off with DPW than with their parents (I can think of one parent in particular whose driveway did not reach the street).
Cover up's of deaths other covert activities are handled by the "black dot" branch of the Rangers - I could tell you more but I'd have to kill you (and cover it up).

Thu, September 13, 2007 - 3:15 AMIt doesn't take a kajillion hours to connect with friends (burner or otherwise) on tribe, it takes 8 minutes. You spent more time perpetuating the story and defending the alleged guy who allegedly lives across the alleged street from the alleged ranch, or some such shit.
I was going to call bullshit, but you stepped it up and cited your real world friends who are Reno cops. Not Reno 911, mind you, but Reno cops. I await police report info, it's a big internet and we can all independently verify your info just as soon as you post anything tangible.

Re: Three Deaths AND a Child Abandonment at Burning Man This Year!
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 1:21 PMHey Wild,
I guess I am just having a bit of problem figuring out after reading that really beautifully written, Total slice of life in a place we all pilgramage to, blog, and all you could say was that 3 people died, and there was a child abandonement? wow.
People, deaths HAPPEN, they happen in the default world and they happen at BM. Whether it was 1 death, or 3, or 5, unless you were directly connected to that person, the number really doesn't matter. People died there, for what ever reason, and we are concerned. But really WHO GIVES A FUCK if it's 1, 3, or 5?
I learned a long time ago, to try and stay away from the rumors, and go for the emotion and the intent of the written word. When you are getting emotion through words, that is truth, or at least truth you can trust. Facts are strictly rumors out there, unless it actually happened to you, and even then. . . .
The factual truth all eventually bubbles to the top. You just gotta be patient for the actually answer.
