Five essential things......

to bring to Burning Man. My friend is an extreme minimalist. I have been to BM five times, but this will be his first. What would you say are the five most essential things to bring to BM if you're trying to pack as light as possible?

that should do it...if your friend was a her not a his, i'd suggest underwear as well, to prevent from alkaliine private parts, but guys have it easier in that department:)

Five cartons of cigarettes. By day two you can get anything you want for smokes. Just like prision. (This didn't work last year, everybody I know quit smoking)

Yeah, I was stuck in San Diego without internet acess for a week. Kinda like rehab. Then I got back and all there was was a buncha complaints about regular posters that are too hostile and stuff. So I was gonna tell them all to F....but I now feel a deep seated need to re-evaluate my life....NOT!

yeah, I've just moved on myself......I think taking back the tribe and not whining is the thing to do, kinda the grassroots approach you know......"active ignoring" is a valuable skill that I'm trying to refine.....BTW

Great advice on the smokes.....I don't smoke, but I do remember seeing a lot of desperate signs for cigarettes.....

I travel very light. And it's best to focus on items that have many different uses.

                      Duct tape is great.

I'd add a Sarong to your list.

"During the day, I used my sarong to keep the sun off my arms. At night, I used it as a blanket to cover me. The morning was chilly, but with the wind rushing past us in the truck, the morning ride was downright freezing. And so I wrapped the sarong around my head as a turban to keep my head warm. Sarongs also make great skirts, towels, window curtains, and 1001 other uses. Do not travel without a sarong!"

"is the crate to sit on?"

The crate is for anything you want. It is one of the basic building blocks of ersatz civilization.

it is a suitcase, a seat, a cupboard, a nightstand, a stool to stand on, with garbage bag-it becomes a bucket or a camp toilet, it could be a hat, lt has always been a toolbox, a basketball hoop, could be a hamster cage or a bike mounted rack, a trash can,... With two dozen crates and duct tape, I'm sure that I could make a shark cage

                a warm sleeping bag
                a hat
                condoms
                water
                food

who am i kidding, you can get everything you need just by asking.

bring yourself. i met a couple of men and women who brought themselves and got everything else from others.
kinda like a socialization experiment that was a success.
                or a beggers heaven.

                =)

i strongly suggest that you don't do this though. Like someone once told me... "How would that be if everyone did it"?

                Yuk =)

                  >who am i kidding, you can get everything you need just by asking. <

As CBN says, not a good idea. We had a group of people who bicycled out from Reno and camped at the airport. At first, some people thought it was cool and adopted them. As the week wore on, so did the responsibility. The final straw was when they asked someone to haul their garbage out for them. Radical Else Reliance is NOT one of the ten principles. That said, if you forget anything, just ask.

A few years back, there was a lovely BRC documentary about a guy at the 2003 Burn,
entitled "Nothing Without You." The "star" strips at the base of The Man, and - with no
water, food, clothing, shelter, sunscreen, etc - he stands in a tiny area on Esplanade.
A sign announces that he has nothing except what others might choose to give him.

By the end of the week, well, you'll have to see the movie, won't you?
