Why, here it is:

Neon's List for day....

1) Get snarky with Crypto.
2) tell Rhino, Bobzilla, and Elaine what wonderful mods they are for not deleting a meaningful discussion on the 'Commerce thread'.

Wonder what I'm doing with Neon's list. I'll have to give it back to her.

really you don't know anyone whose's built thier own bike? Are you in LA ?

for folks that do want to build their own bikes many urban and small cities have free or low cost bike workshops where the parts are all free and you just have to build the bike yourself.

wow that's hard, now you wouldn't have the smug satisfaction of buying something just for burning man and from a Real (c) burner-based business but you also wouldn't have spent much money either and you would be reusing so you could be all smug about being "green".

You should try hay-bale ice chests. They're very sturdy and have good insulation. Admittedly, they wind up being the size of a shetland pony just to hold a six-pack.

I'm not discouraging creativity and DIY....and there's a ton of cool stuff out there from people who've made their own.

I'm just trying to say that it's not always Bad to just BUY some things sometimes (particularly when it's supporting Burner-owned or other small business interests). I put a lot of time and energy into creating my own costumes and other stuff....but some things, I don't bother reinventing the wheel-- it just makes more sense for me from a time-and-materials standpoint to just purchase something from someone who has it figured out. (Podbelt, bras, camelbak/backpack, etc.).

I don't know anyone who makes their own tent or bicycle or cooler. Everyone has to draw their own line about what works for them.

i made that with cargo pockets...and it works well to hold my stuff
while working to set up camp etc...i also wear a fishing vest type thing...that has lots of pockets

or this....it's sewed to a wide elastic belt...so it slips over naked skin....or any other "outfit", and has a large zipper pocket with secret inside pocket...

http://reconstructedclothing.tribe.net/photos/b64f2585-d776-45b9-91fc-27577047f196

i've also taken a canvas belt...and sewn pockets to it.....D rings...etc...all from thriftstore finds..or free stuff.
any sort of leather pouch that slips on a belt ......or old purse...cargo pockets, tool belt pocket attachements...etc...
you can really customize something to your unique personal needs.

alls it takes is some time, patience...and a little needle work.

I built my own "utility belt" out of military or fashion belts (depending on my fashion or practical needs) combined with canvas military pouches and hardware clips. I personalized my set up with fabric paint and markers.

>Build your own damn tool belt.

In terms of the money and time it would take to

1. Design a pattern
2. Source supplies
3. Buy supplies including tools for construction
4. Acquire necessary construction skills (rivet-setting, snap-setting, rubber/leatherworking, sewing for pods, etc)
5. Assemble toolbelt

...it's way less of an impact for some people just to BUY one and support an actual Burner-based business.

For example, here's a story of a guy travelling all over the world as a project to build his own toaster from scratch:

give it a break KK. You're in the military. Surely you have something similar to this as part of your work ensemble. Why is it OK for you and not others - especially if they aren't shilling for BM?

>>It's been clearly stated many times that the fact that there is no buying and selling during the event (except the Two Notable Exceptions) does not mean that the LLC is anti all commerce. And given that people will, in fact, buy supplies and gear for the event, it is not a bad thing to steer them to members of the commmunity.<<

then the capitalist pigs smell a truffle and pose as members of our community to exploit our perceived needs for profit. Build your own damn tool belt. Live the dream.

...
They're not selling them on the playa.
It mentions Burning Man only in the context of that's where the idea germinated.
And they give discounts to Burners.

Oooo, gosh, someone who goes to Burning Man is perhaps making a living on a useful product they've created.
SHOCKING.
