Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:23 AMWow, just wow.
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 8:49 AMBesides being crazy expensive.... how's this much different than renting an RV in Reno, go shopping and then driving it the 100 miles to BM and parking it yourself? For tha price you could buy a used RV and sell it after the event. -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:03 AMBut that would take SOME effort. Who wants to do that?
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:54 PMThank you Flackmaster. Renting an RV for 11,000 dollars is just stupid to me. How much money do people have to blow?
And what kinda lazy ass person has to have it delivered to them in BRC? -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 2:04 PMI try not to judge. God help me...I try.
One of the funniest moments last year was working Dreamtime in Colorado.
Months of 12 hour days, hard labor, lack of crew and resources.
One morning, after weeks of no good food, no money, no whatever...the landowner Steve read an article from the paper.
San Fransisco, Silicon Valley. On how Millionaires were working 80 hour work weeks.
You had to be there, but I know that anyone actually reading this has had a moment in life where you just laughed for 20-40 minutes about the sheer idiocy out there.
The quote that got us was one guy.
" You don't understand! In this City, if you don't have Ten Million, you are nothing!!!"
If you are not laughing at that statement right now...please get counseling and drop me as a friend.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:55 PMIt's all relative. Consider a week in the desert for $11k. I assume that includes space for 3-4 other friends. Now consider that some people pay that much for a one way 1st Class ticket from SFO to London. Sure, it seems excessive - ridiculous even. But to answer the question... there's folks out their with lots of money to burn.
I think people are reacting more to the visceral sense of excess more than anything else.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:07 AMIt's basic capitalism. It assumes that there will be people who are rich who want to go to BM and are willing to pay a lot to avoid any rough edges on the experience. For an additional fee I'm sure that someone would be willing to provide food, costumes, and sex.
And think of how well it all goes with the theme!

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 9:58 AMValue of party and fun that happens en route to BRC* : Priceless
So, if you deduct $10,000 for not taking advantage of the delivery service, I think it sounds like a pretty good deal.
*Includes, in addition to camaradarie, anticipation, and the experience of FINALLY rolling up on the playa: last-minute route reversal to pick up just-remembered important stuff and people (ohhhh!!! we CAN'T go to the playa without the inflatable dolls!); 25 stops at various liquor stores, roadside stands, fabric stores, WalMart (booo!!), pee breaks, breakfast; one of the following- flat tire, road drive-off, shit flying off the top, etc., all of which make you a "real" burner (i.e., good judgement is borne of experience, but experience is borne of bad judgement)

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:23 AMSo most of our 'Radical Self Reliance' starts a couple weeks before the burn, lasts most of the week of the burn (excepting those couple of violent melt downs in the porta potty where you sob and pray to the FSM to transport you the fuck out of hell) and continues - maybe - until we get back to our shitty little houses and revel in the joys of hot running water and flush toilets.
Someone who has the means to rent this fucker for the week planned WAY ahead of that and has been radically self reliant possibly since before they were born: i.e. they chose their parents well! I mean they must have a good income, or be very thrifty savers or wily investors or well born to be able to drop 11+ grand for a week in the desert. Even split four ways they are still doing pretty well. Who knows what obstacles they have overcome to accumulate this chunk of change? Pehaps they are tougher, smarter, younger, and better looking than you - they are almost certainly wealthier.
Is it more worthy to spend the year leading up to Burning Man hand knitting your playa outfits and building your art car out of ground scores than skimming 10% off the top of an aid fund to Darfur and then transfering the fruit of your mental efforts to others to do the physical labor? What if they got rich creating art? Would that make it okay? Is it better if they own the RV and hardly use it all year than rent it just for the week? Driving it there makes it all okay? Personally, I think you should spend the whole week in a tent without ice or a shower to get the full effects of the burn, but I'm not going to impose that on the rest of you.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:19 PMWell at least to me there is no difference in this than actually selling a hotel room on the playa. The only difference is the room has wheels. Normally a person would rent the RV, go drive around Reno and get what they need. Once that is done they head to the Playa. I really have no issue with that. It requires some effort, some self reliance and some real planning.
In this case they dont have to do anything other than show up, not even buy thier food.
What they are doing is turning Burning Man into a tourist destination where they are sold a room and an experience, no participation required. I view it no different than selling a room at Disneyland.
Sad part is these companies are creating a market where they exploit the creativity of others for their own profit and their customers enjoyment. Basicaly the Artists, theme camps and villages are required to pull money out of our own pockets to entertain El monte RV's guests.
What we create is being bought and sold at our own expense. Like it or not El Monte now sells what you create as an all inclusive package deal for tourists. -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:39 PMThis is a good example of how much Burning Man has changed in 10 years.
8 or 10 years ago it would have very tough to find a Burner who thought this was a good thing for Black Rock City. Most would have been pretty vocal about being expolited. The project would have jumped on El Monte about it and maybe threatened legal action. You can bet that wont happen now.
Now its tough to find one who even cares.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:47 PMYou don't even have to leave the RV. They'll just bring you photographs of all the art so you don't even have to get dusty. What a deal! We should all pitch in and rent it just to leave it empty... This is for the Anti-Burning Man.
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 1:00 PMJust because you pay for someone to setup your lodgings, doesn't mean you're not going to participate.
I believe some serious large scale art groups, DJs, etc, might prefer to have food and lodging taken care by someone who WILL do it, and not have that stress (or time from the MAIN things they bring) by a loser who ends up not doing their part of setting up a camp!
Is $11k reasonable?
Well... it's more than I could afford, but my point is, being rich doesn't mean you're not participating.
But I can see it might encourage more spectator yahoo/frat boys to show up.
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 2:50 PMShades of gray. There are probably hundreds of people at BM who pay money to a theme camp so all they have to do is fly into Reno with their two bags of stuff... a campmate picks them up at the airport .... the theme camp provides the tent, bikes, water, food, etc. etc.
Agree this at least has some community aspect to it... but if people have money to burn, let them burn it so long as they leave no trace. -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 5:10 PMExcellent point about the theme camp campers. Lots of us are helping each other, and some of the help is sometimes commercial. It's wrong to be in an RV, but not a tent? They are both commercially-available manufactured items. If someone paid someone to deliver and set up a tent, would that be bad (kinda lame maybe, but not immoral).
Freedom to choose to rent an RV. Freedom to choose to rent an RV that includes a delivery service. If someone has that much money and wants to spend it on making it easier to participate in Burning Man that doesn't bother me at all.
Sasquatch, I remember you once told us the story of being kind of a consultant for some celebrities attending the burn. Kind of similar. People are people, and if they're rich and/or famous, I try not to hold that against them. And sometimes people might just need to buy some "convenience" in a particular year, because of other demands in their lives in the weeks before the burn. -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 11:35 PMHear hear Scott.
It could be those folks earned their money by creating art from found things or perhaps they just worked real real hard and earned their good time. No way to tell if it was earned or stolen but I prefer to think they just worked really hard and weren't just city councilmen somewhere : ).
I'm only bothered in that they've been spared most of the trials and what is a burn without trials? Plus that it's most easily available to those with the most money.
Brittany or Paris shows up and it's likely all over. A real Shark jump.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 4:43 PMYou guys are way too judgmental. After a number of years on the playa, I think an RV would be great. And if you can spend 11 grand to have one delivered, more power to you. It certainly isn't going to take away from my experience.
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 5:12 PMHey, I'm neither old (well... maybe) or decrepit (well ... maybe) and I always take an RV to the Playa. I already own one, which I bought specifically to take to the playa. Bought her in 02 for right around what this rental cost is. Of course, she's taken me and my baby to the Playa and back (as well as many other places) every year since then. So I figure I'm $60K ahead.
On the other hand.... what if you really LOVE going to Burningman, but really don't have the time to deal with all the pre-planning and transportation. What if the only chance you have to experience this years festivities is to fly into Reno on Tuesday, grab a rent-a-(dusty)car and drive to your pre-delivered RV. You have the time of your life for 5 days, then split. How much is it worth if that's the only way you can do it? I'm just saying that value is personal. The fact that some people can't afford to do it, or think its stupid, or think it misses the whole point of Burningman (which I do) doesn't make it evil. And I don't really understand the desire to organize a boycot. But to each his/her own. Just my $.02 -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 5:53 PMForgive my snarkiness I was only half serious. Until recently I was planning on bringing an old fifth wheel trailer I'd acquired to the Burn this year, although I envisioned it as a kind of bar/hookah lounge not a place to sleep. Still, if I had a nice tourbus (or even a shitty old Winnebago!) in my driveway I can't imagine not driving it to the Playa. Still, I shudder at the remembrance of row upon row of rented El Monte RV's all bland and colorless...
If you can afford all that shit you said though, how the hell can you not find the time to deal with pre-planning and transportation? YOU MAKE TIME! If you really LOVE going to Burning Man, you start pre-planning in line for exodus! Just my opinion. -

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:02 AMI started hearing about this service a few years ago although this is the first time I've ever seen a price attached to it and yeah, my initial reaction was "That's fucking outrageous. Don't these people get it?" But after having thought about it for awhile and as someone else here pointed out, most likely anyone deciding to do this will divide the cost between four or five people. Looking at it that way, it's not that far away from what I spend each year to go to the playa, especially before I bought a camper and still rented one for a couple of weeks.
One of the reasons I'm not going this year isn't so much the cost in money of going, but the cost in time. Since I'm self employed, the amount of time it takes me to prepare beforehand and recover afterwards is a significant amount of time away from actually earning a living and I just can't afford to lose that time anymore. But, as someone who's self employed at least I have that choice. Those who work for someone else may not be able to devote the time to get ready and recover like I'm able to do. It does seem a little self indulgent and counter to the "radical self reliance" mantra but rather than assume the worse about anyone who may take advantage of this service, I'd rather get to know them personally first and then decide it they "get it" or not.
I still believe personally that Burning Man is ultimately about radical hedonism and I have no problem with peeps who enjoy themselves harmlessly and live in comfort harmlessly while on the playa. I doesn't hurt if they give something too in the way of art or performance volunteering or whatever. Shouldn't that be the ultimate consideration about whether they get it, not about how they get there and what they live in when they're there? -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 7:14 AMPerhaps we could form an outreach service to minister to our new Playazens.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 11:54 PMI came across the rv rental/set up ad when I was doing a google search for a gas calculator for the burn (any one know where I could find one by the way? I remember seeing some somewhere a few years ago)
I too thought it must be an april fools joke but I don't think it is - and Sas says they checked it out.
Aside from my personal gut reaction - which is "AAAAAHHHHH! - Are you fucking kidding me?" - I also question a couple of things about the add itself. Are they allowed to use the "Burning Man" name to peddle their wares? Or is it just the logo that's protected? and...do you think the company buys the set up guys a ticket? Otherwise, how the fuck are they getting in the gate? Do they get to stay and enjoy the burn? I guess that might be a cool job...
I suppose I can understand someone that might have time or ability limits that would make this kind of offer attractive but, in my opinion, the difference between "getting it" and not would be that someone who "gets it" would find some friends that could share the RV with them and go early to get set up - then the late arriver participates and gives back to their micro community by maybe covering the cost or cooking up a couple of gourmet playa dinners.
The idea of this the way it's advertised makes my skin crawl. -

Hey, I hadn't thought about this: since there are no tickets at the gate this year and the procedure for deliveries etc has always been leave a cash deposit in the amount of a ticket to be recollected on the way out, what's to stop someone from saying they are delivering something, paying the deposit and staying? Or are they just not going to let people in or make it a huge deposit or what? Anyone know what the procedure will be this year? Evil Chris? -

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:40 AMCase in Point 1: Why is it so damned expensive? Answer: Playa dust. You're not cleaning it out, they are. And they will probably replace a few engine parts after your gone just to doubly make sure. It's like you are paying out the security deposit and they know you will cause so much damage in the amount of dirt that you automatically don't get it back.
I don't think paying radical amounts of money to have other people bring you necessities falls under radical self reliance and non-consumerism.
And if the latter chunk of that statement is the whole basis for BM (which if you read the site, it's only every other sentence) then who in hell is going who is that much of a rich yuppie bastard? I would think that before ever going, the website would stop them dead in their tracks. Someone with that kind of money vacations "in style" with first class seats and penthouse apartments. I think BM and it's general population is about the opposite of the kind of person who would rent an RV for 11 grand. -

and just because someone is wealthy does not make them less of a 'burner' .

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 11:22 PM"I don't think paying radical amounts of money to have other people bring you necessities falls under radical self reliance and non-consumerism. "
Non-consumerism? You don't go shopping before you head out to the playa? No trips to Costco or Target? Pshaw. -
-
Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 6:37 AMI'm not going to be doing that, no :)
In fact, the whole notion of "radical self reliance" is hitting a chord with me, and I'm going to try to do as much as I can to avoid big box stores entirely. I'll probably be providing more than half of the fuel I use to travel to Burning Man as well (diesel car/waste veggie oil). There are some things you just can't avoid buying from bigger companies, but for the most part it should be easy to get my shyte in order with a minimum of that sort of thing.
Hell I'm even using a local sawyer for lumber instead of a lumber yard. At least I know the wood isn't coated in transportation costs, and I can get guaranteed quality stuff.
Plus, I think the comparison is a bit askew.. I think there is a difference between preparing for an event yourself, and purchasing the materials.. making a plan... and so on, and just having it done FOR you. That makes the people involved be much more likely to not participate at all, I would think.
I would bet there are rich folk going to BM that specifically do NOT do this, because they know it would ruin the experience for them.

Re: What do you think of this RV Rental thing?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 9:03 AMWell, maybe I'm fortunate to have a host of friends who I could compensate to do these things for me, thus ending up with stuff that costs slightly more than big box, but of better quality. Doesn't everyone know a carpenter or two? An electrician? Those guys are usually pretty handy.
Not that I am going to do that.. half of this is for the experience of being more reliant on ME. I will, however, shamelessly throw cases of beer and boxes of steaks at my handy friends to get their "expertise"... namely, warm, skilled bodies to help me do some of the bigger stuff.
