Higher Tribe fees for 'mature' content.

Okay, so many have shown their support for Tribe by stating they'd be willing to pay a fee. Let's take the conversation one step further. This from Mark's latest blog entry:

"i just want to say that it's been pleasantly overwhelming to hear the level of response and support for tribe. i'll respond en mass to all the posts, comments and emails i couldnt respond to personally (yet:). feels like jimmy steward in a wonderful life with everyone offering to help save the old savings and loan (replace with old community site).

darren has been working on a plan to offer a monthly paid subscription with a goal of generating enough revenue to pay for a full-time engineer/dba. (anyone want that job? email at@tribe.net). we plan to put out an email to all tribe users and post to the blog too.

someone also suggested a higher paid subscription for accessing the adult sections which is also the content that has been totally non-monetizable and made it harder for us to attract advertisers so that might make sense."

QUESTION: What do you think about a higher paid subscription for accessing adult sections?

Are we talking three total levels? 1 basic. 2 ad blocking 3 adult?
I'd like to be able to have adult content on here and having that where it doesn't cause trouble with the "Will Somebody Think of the Children?" crowd makes sense to me. I'd prefer 2 and 3 to be jammed together, with I suppose whatever ID check is needed.

Man, if folks don't know how to adblock on their own by now... Jeebus.

Screw a higher price for the adult stuff. Some peoples are on a porn budget, yo.

Just gimme a power user membership with some filesharing widgets or some html options and maybe a live tribe/thread activity monitoring sidebar.

    That would be stylin'.

Hell, they also need to do something about some of the worst trolls around here. I just left a Creation/Evolution debate site because of a fucktard who called me a liar. Christianoid. Go figure.

There are some people who should be forced to spend time at Thunderdome.

Thunderdome's too good for them. (and coming from me that's something.) No, they need to spend some time in Fluffy Pastel Bunnyland, where the Fluffy Pastel Bunnies are also Gangster Atheist Bunnies. With tommyguns in violin cases. I'm talking serious Bunnies, who don't take shit from no one.

Yeah, Thunderdome is a passion play with no real blood.
        Playing at "badass"

Drop the fucker off in the middle of the playa.
Not alone. Right next to you, my friend. Face to face with no veils.
It would be like that Star Trek episode where Kirk is transported to a rocky wasteland planet to battle a Lizard Warrior.

Yeah, it would be JUST like that Star Trek episode

I don't see where there is any indication of a three level plan. Mark said it "might make sense" for an adult content level, but that they were working on plan now. I'm going to wait and see what they come back with. Regardless I plan on joining and also paying for a friend who *can't afford it*, as opposed to *won't pay it".

I guess the 3 level plan was my own interpretation. He mentioned a 'higher paid' subscription... implying there would be a 'lower paid' subscription.

A 2 level plan... free and paid (which includes access to adult content) would be fine by me. It's the idea of segregating the paid memberships that doesn't sit right with me for some reason.

It also sounds like he's floating the idea to test the waters and see what we think. We should let him know what we think.

I'd be all for it. I don't do porn. I feel sorry for the actors and/or models and that takes any of the fun out of it. I think I may have spent too much time working with abused kids.

In a two tiered plan, I'd pay, but I'd really, really, really like an ignore feature.

Important to note: Adult content is not porn... at least not on Tribe. A lot of genuine art and mature subject matter has been categorized as 'adult' on Tribe. We're not talking about porn here, we're talking about adult content.

            Yeah, what she said
and that's even more of a reason to not ghettoize it.

Part of the problem with multiple levels of paid membership is that unless there are substantial benefits for the higher levels, people cheap out and buy the lowest level. Just like BM tickets, I *know* there are lots of people who can afford higher priced tickets that get the cheapest tier one tickets.

Any tiered system has to plan to make their projected financial goal achievable if 100% go for the cheapest option, then anyone who goes for a higher level is just gravy.

Right, and I don't look at that stuff either. I can't. In my head it's all lumped together, and like you said earlier, “who would decide” which is what for the purposes of advertising? If it was paid for by subscribers, that would make the lost ad revenue a moot point.

(but I really want an ignore feature).

Most of what I use Tribe for is the "adult" content. I work on a zine that serves the BDSM community, I am on several tribes where fellow pervs discuss everything from proper aftercare for a spanking scene to perv-friendly beauty services. It's hardly a porntastic free-for-all, and anyone who posts any sort of "oh baby, I want you to lick my big throbbing . . ." is roundly mocked and sent on their way as a troll. I did send Mark a message earlier noting that I think Tribe two biggest constituencies are Burners and kinksters, and that while I think the Burner community has folks on here who are better suited than I to organize, that I would be happy to aid in helping do organizing with the kink community.

I guess I find it a little annoying that in a theoretically open-minded community like Burning Man, those of us who engage in a lifestyle of consensual sexual deviancy still get to be considered icky and coerced by our fellow Burners. Okay, I'll admit it, my boyfriend has coerced me into a couple of scenes . . . and they were really hot. Except the tickling. God I hate the tickling.

I'm wondering who would classify "adult", though.

Would the Polyamory tribes be considered adult? Even though the focus isn't explicit sex, but relationships with multiple people, would that equal adult?

How about the Fine Art Nude photography tribes?

Or are we just talking OBVIOUSLY adult tribes like the porn-esque tribes?

"I'm wondering who would classify "adult", though."

      The million dollar question.
      • One of Tribes most appealing aspects is the ability for any member to float about and participate in any and all/most tribes. I don't want my aimless wanderings to be moderated by any outside entity.

And what is adult content and will the all important appendage reach out to include not only images, but language? Both are under the category "content".
Is using the word fuck in the threads considered mature language signifying mature content leading to banishment b/c "we can't have any of that here!"

        Fuck that.

And by the way....I'm not paying for Tribe access. I love you fuckers and all, but payment would force me to feel obligated to waste time on the net as opposed to mountain climbing or washing the dishes or working. You see, paying for Tribe would ruin my life.

        That is all.
        Carry on.

Hi Dusty! *emphatically waving at the monitor and blowing kisses*
        • I don't consider my time on Tribe "wasting time on the net". I work 9 to 5 behind a computer all day, I do tech support so I'm online anyway. Tribe runs in the background all day.

I make plans on Tribe to go do real world things with people, collaborate and update each other on projects, search for art events, get recipes, wine tips, restaurant reviews, etc. I get real mileage out of Tribe. $5 bucks a month...I give more to homeless people on the street each month
          • By the same token, there are a lot of folks who come here just to play... or 'waste time'... and frankly, my Tribe experience wouldn't be the same without them. For every troll and instigator and creep that pisses me off, there's a thoughtful lurker, a clueless virgin, or a blatant asshole that I can't help but love. If they wanna pay to be here, fine. And if they don't, that's fine too. As long as the structure gives them opportunity to come and waste time with us, I'm happy.

Hi Linty! *telepathically pinching your ass right now*

You could sort of work it the way it is now. A moderator would declare his tribe "adult" and that would allow "adult" content, the sexy parts shown for instance. If a moderator wanted to keep his site non-adult, he could so declare and then if someone found nasty (hot/sexy/adult) content on his tribe the normal flagging would happen.

I think Tribe needs a lot of work before I'm willing to pay for it.
It's not there yet. It's got a little bit of everything, a whole lot of nothing, and little focus.
I think adult content is the only thing that should have a monthly fee on it, at least at this time.
I wouldn't pay for it, it's not my thing. But sex sells, and people do and will pay for that. I think if there was some way to
I think it will also create enough of an audience buffer that it will allow Tribe to attract some advertising, it needs it to survive.

As someone who both regularly posts mature content and is perpetually broke, I find myself facing the eventual scenario of being priced out of my own profile!

I think the best way to start would be voluntary donations.

If the mature content issue is a problem that wold be solved by registration with a credit card, the charge could be small enough that virtually anyone could afford it. Legal issues should remain separate from fundraising.

Our disposable incomes go up and down, but it is best for tribe access to be constant. Just making it easy to donate (no long "CRM" forms) will generate immediate income from the part of the constituency with good superego development.
