Anyone know what that thing was? It appeared around 4PM at the far
end of the hills north of Selenite Peak.
At first I thought it was a magnesium or aluminum flare, but there was
no smoke and it appeared again the following day.
Did someone set up a reflective art project in the hills?

Tue, September 20, 2005 - 8:36 PMof all the things I missed.......... that were big, centrally located, etc........ I didn't miss that.
I can't tell ya what it was, but I did see it.

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Tue, September 20, 2005 - 9:07 PMIt didn't move whatever it was. But it did fade and disappear after a while. I saw it about that time on Monday after BM. What day did you see it on?
My guess is there's a piece of something really shiny just sitting there and at the right time of the day, the sun hits it at the right angle and then we saw it down on the playa. -

But reflective art project in the hills! Great Idea! (permit nightmare I'm sure, but- wow) -

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Tue, September 20, 2005 - 10:51 PMI was told that some "artist" put "Mirror-Like" objects on the hills and that at different times during the day the sun reflects off these "discs" to different points of reference on the playa.. so... at any given time during the day the reflected light can be seen from different angles and places around the playa...
shrug
didnt meet the person first hand just was told that thats what it was...

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 7:34 AMThere are several strategically placed 10x10 mirror tiles that have been up there for several years. The original source and reason are unknown to me, but I can confirm what it is that is refelcting the sunlight.
Memory serves there were some major laser projects back around 99 that might have used them. -

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 10:40 AMI'm kinda glad the panels are left there - aside from them provoking a lot of "what's that bright white spot on the mountainside" questions at BM, I believe that it's a good thing to leave some traces of our culture for future cultures to stumble across, especially if those leave behinds are artisitic and puzzling.
Thank goodness the Anasazi left piles of corn baskets, grinding stones, sandals and adobe block buildings and graineries across the southwest, along with their graffitti scrawlings in the black stained sandstone. Ancient trash heaps and miscellaneous droppings are an archeaologist's dream.
Someday, we'll be little but dust. Perhaps a primitive culture following our act on this stage will emerge and find those panels and gain personal insight checking out their reflections on peyote. Who is to say?
I like that they are a trace left behind...

Thu, September 22, 2005 - 1:17 PMIf ancient peoples had embraced the concept of "leave no trace", there would be no such thing as archaeology. -

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 10:21 AMahhh Groover, I do recall the lasers from back then... and the "grid" they created over the playa... if its the same one... thanks,
it would be cool to locate all of them and see where the sun reflects and what time of day it's reflected to be visible on the playa.. we had located the "4pm" one and saw it each day.. very cool to watch it stay lit for about 10 mins then disappear like it did....

Agreed. Industrial green, and it looked a few inches in diameter. Amazing. -

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 12:03 PMI remember someone hiked there post event (2002? 2003?) and said that they were solar panels. for what it's worth.

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 1:04 PMi saw it too. I think it's a very ignorant idea to do something like that. With coincidences beyond my knowledge the reflective surface can break, and eventually and cause a fire. It is contrary, and thus does not belong to Burning Man.
As far as I can tell that shiny thing is creating an eternal piece of man made waste just to grab an attention. it's a statement of stupidity of not being able to realize that this type of attention will bring you no joy at all. -
-
Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 1:49 PMJust to clarify ... There is no confirmation that they are related to Burning Man, that is simply a possibility. There are many that use the area on a year round basis and have there own unique reasons for doing what they do. It's presumptious to think that Burning Man and Burning Man Participants are the only ones that impact the area.
Have you ever been down Doobie Ln? Lot's of cool stuff that has no direct ties to the letter B or M.

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 8:35 PMI was told that they are mirrors put there a few years ago to bounce lasers off of. The odds of them starting a fire are so remote that it pains me to type this.
Most likely they will be ground to dust in a rock slide many years hense. -

So put a team together, hike on up, and rectify the situation. -

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 11:20 PMI saw those things from the 3 o'clock plaza. There were two of them. One to the viewers right and slightly below the other one. They looked like they were a hundred feet of so below the top of the mountain and there didn't seem to be any trails or roads on the near side.
Having found aircrash remains a couple times while hiking I guessed it might be some leavings like that but I don't know. Looks like a bear of a hike though.

Bring binoculars next year...
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 9:05 AM
Anyone who's truly interested can track down the 1999 laser folks and ask if they left anything.
Or, (google) contact Washoe County, NV, describe the situation, and ask for followup.
If it's trash, sure, let's get that cleaned up. If it isn't, a wee bit of homework will settle that question.
I'm sure whoever's most concerned about this will take proactive action. -

I'm sure too.
NOT
I'll bet you $5 they'll just piss and moan on tribe and bend our ears off about it.
But I'm a cynic. -

Re: Bring binoculars next year...
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 9:22 AMOr if they are still shiney enough we could use them over and over and over. Recycled moop! Lasers are getting cheaper. Or a pad that has a map and time of day referance chart to set your playa clock.

That's one of the issues that came up in 2003 when I remember someone hiking up there.

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 11:34 AMI seem to be the only person getting cramps with the fire hazard paranoia.
so uh; I think i'm gonna try and hike up there next year and liberate the hills from that shiny unidentified thang...
(stands up and shouts with a shaky emotional adrenaline boosted voice):
WHO's WITH ME?!..
and no it's not too early to call me a hero. -

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 12:05 PMThere are actually quite a few little objects up in the hills that will reflect at certain times of day. There are old bits of debris from plane crashes, little radio towers, and probably all manner of private projects that people have erected. I've seen glints from the hills all over the place every year I've been there.

Re: That bright, shiny thing in the hills?
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 12:47 PMI hear it is a USGS laser reflector, for siesmic monotoring of the fault that runs along the playa, so tampering with it would be a federal offense.
Good luck with that. -
