wrong. there was noting that i mis-interpreted about her use of "gigging". in all the musical world that i know of, "gig" is a paying job. oh, and notice how she so artfully dodged my question by stating "no money is exchanged on-playa"

Your relentless snarking, deliberate mis-interpratation, and and downright rudeness, has clearly crushed poor Stephany's delicate inner clown.
You should be ashamed of yourselves. I, on the other hand, am actually kind of proud of you little hooligans.Keep up the good work. This is no place for the thin skinned, and I am impressed at how quickly you were able to get rid of that little twit.

I'm sorry, GoldGuy, I knew something had gone wrong there, but I think this is the first time I've heard what. What a fucking outrage, really. When you have something like that, it's hard not to think that it's gone to someone who appreciates it less. If it was the theives, obviously not. If they sold it or gave it away, I don't have all that much hope either. I mean the whole stealing thing is wrong enough, but the realignment of meaningful objects, that fucking sucks worse. And I'm sorry it happened to you GoldGuy. Such a shame.

I had a rare 3D camera stolen from me while I was installing my display in center camp. Very slimy too. The guy insisted on giving me his "special hug" while his friends took the camera. Realized it long after they were gone.

That night was wild!

A large group of beautiful girls came over and started to dance... that attracted a bunch of guys... soon everyone was dancing.

I thought I might convince some folks to take up the accordion so I announced that "the accordion is a chick magnet"...

OK, sa said it quite well, but I'll go ahead and chime in.

First of all, Chris, you can try "lightening up" yourself, Sheesh!

Second of all, I know a bit about how art ends up on the playa, seeing as I have spent many long hours creating and then placing and maintaining my installations on the playa.

And, yes, she did the whole goddess business and gracing/gifting us with her songs. Like sa said: a simple request for stages/camps she might play would have had a far different response. You might even look at my other comment about this.

No Hipster treatment at all from me. However, your numbass "Meh" joke might qualify as such. Not even sure what the purpose of that was.

I don't know how the fuck you can accuse me of killing live music on the playa. Pull your head out, man.

And, Chris, if you can learn to read between the lines, you would have sensed the marketing/self promotion of the original post and why it got the reaction it did.

I value life on the playa for the true gifts one gives and receives, those that come without an "agenda" of self promotion/marketing. The original post seemed to cross that line, whether intended or not.

(And Crypto, why don't YOU start one; it is a do-ocracy, after all? Ans: Because I dislike muscians and would be doing that sub-section of burners no favor by starting it.
Yeah, I have to agree. If the "Goddess" is in one or more D/s relationships, then I didn't consent to having that information foisted on me. If she's from a hippie sub-culture thing where all women are goddess, well, I just threw up in my mouth a little. And she got off light.

But it's not appropriate in American mainstream culture, or even every subculture.

I thought I had said my piece, but now I have to set you straight, Chris.

What do you mean there's no <<"goddess gifting us with your songs">> about it?

The Goddess writes:

<<I am a singer / songwriter looking to grace the playa with my songs.>>

This is not a simple request to play some music, or at least it doesn't come across that way. There's obviously a vibe in her post that rubs people the wrong way. I, for one, would have no problem with her saying, "I love to play music and would be honored to play for all you wonderful people. Can someone direct me to a vacant stage?"

And who calls themselves "The Goddess?"
Sheesh!

'i hope to have the pleasure of listening to your gift live '

Thanks!

I meet lots of people on the playa when I play... the people that are attracted to my music I meet.

Sometimes they sing, sometimes they dance, sometimes they like to pass out in front of me (don't ask.. it's a gift).

The folks that don't like my music I don't meet.

It's a win-win for everyone!

Perhaps things will open up soon, but I'm seeing less venues forming for live music this year.. but that doesn't matter.

If you play an instrument, bring it. Find a nice shade structure, hang out and play. Before you know it your music will attract other musicians and then the jam begins!

You don't KNOW??? meh.

Jesus you guys, lighten up. If you read the original post, there is no "marketing" or "goddess gifting us with your songs" about it. She simply said that she was looking for camps to play at. Rather than wandering the playa with a guitar, she is taking a very sensible step of a) putting it out there in a timely fashion that she would like to play, and b) including a link to her music so people can decide if they want to invite her to play. What is someone supposed to do to pass y'all's "inclusion" test? Just be one of the same known group of snarksters? Seems like anyone who comes in asking a real life question, no matter how simple, gets the entitled, "oh, how GAUCHE of you to say that" Hipster treatment.

Rev. Dusty, you say you "love hearing live music on the playa..." Well, how the hell do you think it gets there?? People actively pursue the opportunity to play for your listening pleasure, it doesn't just magically occur. With your attitude, you will be seeking a long time, because you're basically acting to kill the thing you say you love.

It's unfortunate that you have to wade through a bunch of BS to accomplish direct communication in this tribe. Irony is more of a spice than a diet-- and reading this tribe is getting to be a lot like eating pepper for dinner.

Stephanie,

If you're gifting all the burners who come to hear you at the burn a taste of your music, that's great, and I wish you sincerely the best of luck and hope you find a sound stage.

What would be really cool, in my opinion, is if you were to set up at the 3:00 or 9:00 plaza for all to hear in those sectors (pursuant, of course, to approval from event placement). And, you might even get listed in the program of events. Just do it thoughtfully and plan it out ahead of time.

Stephanie, I am the one who mentioned washing after reading your post. While you might not think it is very "burner-like", I was reacting to your the whole "Goddess gifting us your songs" business. You wanna play? Get out there and play your heart out. It was really the whole tone involved in the post that was so off putting. I love hearing live music on the playa and will continue to seek it out. Your post came off as a real commercial promo for yourself...not really a gift at all, but self-centered promotion.

And please don't give me that "I feel really bad that you have learned nothing about the love that persists at the burn" bullshit. What sanctimonious crap. You assume I am some lost soul that hasn't learned anything from "the burn", while you are an enlightened goddess sprinkling love among the dust?

By the way, I say this as a musician of many years, with "left of the dial" college play for quite a few of those. When I play on the playa, its for the fun of it, not to promo myself.

To me (and I think others), the real gift is experiencing the art, not feeling like I am a marketing target.

I hope you enjoy yourself and bring happiness to others with your music...but please, at the burn, try not to be such a marketer about it.

Hi guys,

Although I appreciate all the banter with regards to my post, I would like to address two specific ones.

The one who said that they felt they needed to wash after my post: I thought that was really rude and not very burner like. Some of use just like to play music. I am a three year veteran of the burn and maybe you have more years or something on me and if you do, I feel really bad that you have learned nothing about the love that persists at the burn.

Jarjar: no money is exchanged at the burn. Why would I expect money? A gig is an opportunity to perform in front of an audience in my dictionary.

I see these posts as some major resistance reflected to me as possibly some energy within myself that is afraid to get my music out there.

For those of you who showed loving support, thank you. For those of you that have problems with artists that want to share their work at the burn, why are you going to burning man to begin with. Disppointed.

Just look for the main stage. It will be the one with the big sound and lighting rig.
They have stage techs and everything to help you with all your needs.
If you can't get a gig there maybe you can get on second stage which is right under the man...

The reeds inside of the accordion are held there with a wax/rosin mixture. I would think that it would be very susceptible to heat.

I never measured the temperature in my van... but with all the windows blocked with foil my accordion has never had a problem during the past 10 years on the playa.

That said, if you can bring another instrument... do it.

But I highly recommend keeping it safe from being stolen by keeping it locked up.

would you please clarify one point for me? what exactly do you mean when you say "gig"? my cousin, who is a lead guitar for a popular band, defines "gig" as a paying job. my brother, lead singer for another band, defines "gig" as a paying job. what is YOUR definition of "gig"?

Even with foil, I think the car will get way too hot....I once warped a Martin D-35 in a closed car.

Consider a beater, travel guitar...buy it used on Craigs. There easy to carry, and when you know its a beater, you won't get bummed when it's covered with dust, rain, or warped by extreme heat or worse. Plus, it makes a great beach and backpacking guitar.

The other option is to create some weird-ass playa special that sounds nothing like anyone has heard before....that's always good, too.

Lots of great jams going on!

Bring your instruments!!!!

I would recommend that you make a humidifier for your guitar case... cut both ends of a plastic tube off, poke it with holes then stuff it with a wet sponge.... works like a charm! And if you keep your guitar in your car... cover the car windows with aluminum foil to keep the heat out.. then cut the top off of a gallon water jug... it will add more humidity to your car.

Hey friends,

I am a singer / songwriter looking to grace the playa with my songs. Let's set up a gig with your camp!

If any of you have camps that are looking for some rocking acoustic pop/rock/blues music, we'd love to entertain.
I say we because the act consists of myself and veteran burner T-Bone (Lenny Camp). We do very cool rockin acoustic duo (not folk).
So make our day and invite us to play! :)

Let us know when and where and we'll set it up.

You can hear my music at www.stephanieerdel.com or myspace.com/stephaniemusic

Look forward to hearing from you. If you are interested you can reply here or email directly at steph@stephanieerdel.com

Counting the days. . .
