I totally think Joshua Allen Harris does neat work, even if he's hit in a way that makes him really trendy.
www.youtube.com/watch
His art is very dependent on certain city infrastructure, and we aren't going to have a subway next year*. But maybe on top of a dome, inflating during wind? It would also play against our reaction to moop--moop as art.
Okay, I don't think I'm gonna due that. However I would like to open this thread to all sorts of brainstorming about art projects that might tie into "metropolis." What would you like to see out there?
(*Actually, one of those wrought iron "Metro" gates from Paris would be lovely.)

Re: "Metropolitan" Art Ideas
Sat, September 19, 2009 - 8:41 PMBecause they are such a feature (actual and symbolically) of the American West, and because they are the products of a boom and bust cycle that in some ways we replicate on the playa, ghost towns might be a source of artistic inspiration.
www.ghosttowns.com/
English Russia has a lot of amazing photos of Soviet ghost towns: englishrussia.com/
This one is especially appealing to me, for obvious reasons: englishrussia.com/

Sat, September 19, 2009 - 9:08 PMThat video wouldn't play for me, but I love the idea.
I also liked the photos of the abandoned Soviet ghost towns. Why do they call it 'English Russia?'
I watched a show on the Soviet Union AS it was collapsing, and it seemed like some artists went completely nuts. There were groups of artists living in squats in downtown Moscow. There was even an architect who would wander through abandoned buildings with a sledgehammer, demolishing dangerous structures and fixing the plumbing and electrical in the habitable structures. He considered himself an 'Architectural dentist', removing rotten buildings and fixing up the ones that needed to be repaired. -

In case youtube was the problem, here's the first video again: www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/968323/
Feel free to cut out at 1:00 if you want: www.gvsmedia.com/video-2/6...olar-Bears
Another reason I really like this is that it's on the streets--not in a gallery.

Yeah, but another idea is a whole set of subway entrances all around BRC.
It would be called BRAT (Black Rock Area Transit). You can't use the system unless you whine or throw a tantrum.

Re: "Metropolitan" Art Ideas
Sun, September 20, 2009 - 11:42 AMWe can place steel railroad track into the playa so tat bicyclists can ride over it and bust their asses just like they do in San Francisco.

Re: "Metropolitan" Art Ideas
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 8:25 PMsince metropolis is about the life of cities, a memorial to past cities that have fallen. ya know, troy, alexandria, rome before the fall, et cetera.
i personally want to see an uprising of oppressed subterranian workers, huge machines that do nothing but grind away and look cool, and of course, robots. -
