Food will be sold on the playa this year.

This is great news. Many a time I've been out there on that playa in need of a tasty snack. Yes, I know about all that silly stuff about radical self-reliance, but stopping at Vons to buy food is such a hassle and the piped music in there is nothing I could dance to.

So here's all you have to do. Send cash to Benjamen from "Divine Nourishment" and he'll do all the work for you. And here's the best part, it's only $217. He even said I can pay him right there on the playa at 2 o'clock and D. Score.

No joke. This is awesomeness.

I've talked to somebody who has used this service and she had nothing but good things to say so if you want to hear first hand about her experience, check out this video:

My two cents: I don't know Ben and I've never had his meals. So nothing personal. But the notion of paying for a meal service by a vendor on the playa strikes me as odd and against the ten principles.

But today is Saturday and I'm not in church.

I don't know Ben and I've never tried his meals either.

But that has nothing to do with it.
The point is he's selling food and that's in not what BM is about.

So are you endorsing this or not, Paynie? Why give free publicity on this service? Your original post is so vague it's difficult to tell if you're a promoter or a detractor.

For the record and since you did bring this up: where do you come down on Divine Nourishment? Yay or nay?

We've been through all of this a hundred times.

There are tour companies who will do it all for you if you give them the money.

          Pathetic, but who really cares.

    okay,

so let me get this straight.

    1. divine nourishment has offered to provide you with food, already cooked for you on a daily basis for $217.

    2. i'm assuming that this concept is 'new to you', even though people have been doing this on playa for years and years now.

    3. i assume that you have judged this idea as 'wrong' and now that you have made a whole thread about it, you assume that all of us are supposed to jump on the douchebag bandwagon with you and go stab this person.

    have i got it right?
now, explain to me why this is important to me, or you, and what the problem exactly is?

I'm guessing he's agin it on the basis of the whole 'no vending' thing, but that's just a guess. This comes up every year and every year someone else brings up the whole "You drop a bundle at Costco on the way in, why not throw some of that cash a fellow burner's way?" line and it goes like that.

to me, vending is when you can walk right up and purchase from a stranger, with no previous agreement in place. that one can assume there will be a fixed meal, paid for per meal, and that the obligation ends there. just like a restaurant.

it seems to me that divine nour. people are offering more than that. like a shared kitchen, you buy-in to the week long costs of being fed. also, does this money pay for camp fees too? i just don't have enough information to understand why this is wrong. chances are, you have to pre-arrange it with them so that you can eat, even if they let you delay payment until during event. i doubt that i could walk into their camp and order up a tasty snack and just pay for it right there.

I'm pretty sure you can't join on the playa without a prior agreement. Also in this vein always comes up the "self reliance" of a camp shower, kitchen, evap pond, shade structure, and the like.

My first year at BM was as part of a theme camp that was part of a village. We contributed money, labor, ideas, supplies. At least most of us did. Some people rolled up the day we left with no prior word that they had any plans to join us and were welcomed, but man, if they had the means they had to fork over a monetary contribution as it was too late to make up for all the prep they didn't help with. Others were part of the group at it's inception, but had other firm commitments and couldn't make it to build parties and meetings. They could, however, contribute monetarily and did.

DN asks for a monetary contribution, or time, or both. If you can't (or won't) contribute time, you have to contribute more money. The thing that really gets people about DN is that they ask people if they want to join who have no ties to them. I think if Bouncy Bouncy Club sent Paynie an email asking if he wanted to be a part of their communal kitchen, his reaction wouldn't be as severe (if it were negative at all) and that's because that's a generally accepted (though not universally excepted) path to eating on the playa.

I'm on the fence here. I've always been a part of a communal kitchen, and have managed to never cook on a camp-out though I can cook up a storm at home. I contribute in plenty of other ways gladly, but "outdoor cooking" is an oxymoron to me.

I have no issue with camp kitchens.
            RND has a camp kitchen.
But you have to be part of the RND to eat there. No problem.

DN doesn't care where you camp .... and that's BS.

ok, so it's okay to share a kitchen in your own camp, but not someone else's? but, what if....

what if i were camping with people who do not have a shared kitchen? i could not go eat with my other friends, and invest in their kitchen???

what if i hate camp drama, and desire to camp alone, yet i don't want to eat alone? please explain what is wrong with investing in someone else's kitchen and making new friends there?

clearly, this is not a case of vending. i think it's cool that there are people who want to share their kitchen with others. i think you are getting all excited over nothing.

I'm another who doesn't cook well. And I'm a damn picky eater. It's possible that some of my trouble with the playa goes back to food issues. I'm assuming that whoever is doing this loves to cook. Shouldn't we bring our best selves to the playa? (I can't belive I wrote that. As soon as this post is done, it's off to the vomitorium.) If our best self is someone who loves to cook food and serve it to others should we squelch that? And is asking the diners to chip in for ingredients and propane so bad?

But I do have mixed feelings. But we do have differing gifts.

                Blah.

Most of my troubles on playa DO go back to food issues. My first two years out there I didnt eat for shit and I paid for it. This year I looked for a camp who could provide a meal a day (and of course I plan to contribute). Point is, hell I dont know what my point is. I really dont give a rat's asshole.
