Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions, your all so thoughtful and creative!
I like the idea of eating the placenta, but not so much as a name. Very original though, Badger.
The number names are interesting too. Although I kinda like the idea of spelling the number: Forty Two Skywalker.
For that matter, we could just name it Number or # for short.

Tyler,

I have a pretty good idea that these name solicitations are probably *not* going to result in a name that you'll use for your child. Though I may be wrong here I suspect that the both of you have probably mulled over - even agonized - over the perfect, appropriate name to give your beautiful, wanted, cherished heaven-sent child of the universe and you have in fact already decided on a name.

I think all of us here can understand and appreciate that. Still, before you formalize it on the child's birth certificate you may want to reconsider your choice. Remember, this is a decision that the child will carry on their shoulders for many years. Having said that I'm wondering if it's too late to suggest Placenta Asphalt Morningcracker. I think it might work regardless of the child's gender.

That's what my wife and I did too. Every name we considered we had to run through a tease gauntlet in our minds. If it was too tempting and easy to make fun of, it was off the list.

And yeah, what's with giving a kid some ostentatious first name, then insisting that the kid be called by their middle name? I know two families who did that. Name them what you want them to be called, people. It's pretty simple. (end of mini rant here since I couldn't really rant to their face about it)

There's a lot of good old names that don't seem to be getting used much these days, If it's a boy, you could use Arnold, Clyde, Delbert, Cecil, Herbert, Cyrus, Homer, Claude, Durwood, Jehosophat, Jethro, or Beelzebub.

If it's a girl, how about Matilda, Ethel, Beatrice, Gladys, Penelope, Myrtle, Hermione, or Desdemona?

All of these suggestions are ridiculous and will not do anything to truly have fun with your child. Your child is a gift that you should have fun with.

Name your child something that will really screw with its head.
What about naming it No, Wrong or Stupid.
Or what about naming him George Bush or Adolph.

Just remember a name will stick with a child for life or until they change it. But in the mean time, their name will give the child a meaning to who it is. Don’t take this lightly. Mess with your child’s head all you can.
Hell our parents screwed us up, why should these little playa boogers not start out just as screwed up as we are?
The children our the future?
WHO CARES, I’ll be dead soon and they can bitch about things when I’m gone.

If you are seriously looking for a name, try and name them something that can't have a nick name to it. If you want to name them, lets say Thomas as an example, in hopes of him being called Tom or Tommy then by all means name him Tom or Tommy. It helps alot in grade school because kids can be evil!

The triple test I was told when naming your kid is to see how it would sound: 1. Running for president "I like Rufus!" 2. Walking into a bar "Hi, Norm!" and #3. shouted in extasy "Hump me harder, Harold!". This is why I named my kid after that great singer Englebert Humperdink!

I'd be really reluctant to go with something "cool." Because in 20, 30 years it could be very dated and dorky. YMMV.

Oh, boy... you opened yourself up for this one!

Seriously, though.... picking a name is important -- it's going to be part of your child's identity for the rest of his or her life.

What is important to you? I love my name -- It's Irish and reflects a rich heritage. My friend named her son Hayden, because she wanted to name him something cool that he would like when he's older and that would help in his picking up chicks (seriously... she struggled with this). My other friend is a Roman history buff and named her son Alexander.

So... start with what is important to you and go from there. Have a couple of names handy -- when you see the baby, you'll know what's right.

Thanks, Tyler! I've put a lot of names out there for friends; it's a weird function of my brain. Mainly, they seem to exist as a kind of polarizing force that lets parents choose names more easily by eliminating every single thing I suggest. It's a good service to be able to provide, I think, in some weird mathy/subcognitive way.

If it's really born on the 29th you could always tweek the name "Gioachino" to sound more english and if necessary more feminine. After Rossini, who was born on that date. Or you could go with Frederik from the Pirates of Penzance.

Or you could go with the dominant theme of this board with "Snark."

I'm with KK on this Junior (but spell it right) 'cause then you could call the kid TJ, how cool is that? "Goin' toTJ, gonna watch the donkey show." Not that your kid will be a donkey or anything....whew is it getting hot in here? Love that little baby up, soon enough a kid will take it's place and you'll miss the wittle toothless cutie!
