Good reporting. www.sfweekly.com/2010-09-0...mvillains/

Pincus steals, exploits, then bales on startups. He stole from tribe, correct? I cannot believe everyone is shrugging their shoulders and saying Facebook and Zynga are as good as social communication tools will ever get. It's pissing me off.

Tribe's not dead, and it was the best laid out social network in history. IMHO. Can't some VC or someone see that and revive this thing so that there is growth? I know it's still breathing, but we need new blood.

Thoughts on the article, Zynga, Facebook, Pincus, and Tribe are welcome here. OT I know... but I am engaged in this stuff. Are you?

If you don't contribute, the internet belongs to everyone else. Remember that. - Fishbits

I finally broke down and joined face...thingy just to not be totally out of my friends' communications. It's format pretty much promotes triviality, and makes it pretty difficult to engage in real conversation of the type tribe is so good at.

In my more paranoid moments I think all the hacker attacks that knocked out the site so often were deliberate attempts by the Con to destory what was such a great platform for real exchange of ideas and information.

I'm amused that the article called tribe.net a "failed" social networking site. Sure it's probably losing money, and now governed by some absentee shadowy folks that are too cowardly to actually show their faces, endlessly promising some "new" features that never materialize.... but hey, it's RUNNING. We're here.

I don't rely on it to be up any more, though. I made my connections with the people I want to keep in touch with on Facebook. Evil, but stable. (and email of course, for the closer people)

      >Sure it's probably losing money

By that simple measure, the U.S Federal Government and most of the corporations that control it are also 'failed'.

The 'failing' formula in Tribe's case, though, is that it is structured so as to keep people focused on discussion topics,
rather than on persuading each other to play games and make available to marketing agencies the personal details of every
possible person they have ever met.

Moreover, Tribe's appeal is to a smaller, smarter group of people, and that makes it less profitable than Facebook.

Don't know if it's a "Failing Formula" to focus on topics.
I value being able to ask a community of folks, that I don't know, questions about various subjects.
I personally doubt many of my "FB Friends" know anything about many of the questions that interest me.
I'd think that the Topic model would be an easier model to "Sell" to. If the topic is Costumes, then you can bet they are interested in cloth, and other materials for costumes. Shade structures: Probably tarps and tents.
I'd love to find a more robust "Tribe" model. The numbers are dwindling.....

"Smarter group of people"?? Have you read some of the drivel that's posted on Tribe??

I've been checking out AnyBeat, a new networking site that offers discussion topics somewhat akin to "tribes". There's an active one dedicated to Burning Man, for example. You're encouraged to sign up with a pseudonym to promote uninhibited dialog. And the membership is definitely growing. One of the best things is that the site developers are very interested in everyone's feedback and input, so if there's some special aspect of Tribe that you love then you're invited to make suggestions to help refine the community experience.

            Whoo! www.anybeat.com

Don't think I could ever let tribe go completely, but anybeat is closest thing yet. Burning man related is ace and anybeat is built and run by the most lovely burners you'll ever meet :)

    gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/8...dealogy/

A former senior employee at the company commented that Zynga CEO Mark Pincus said at a meeting that "I don't [expletive] want innovation. You're not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers."

The allegations don't stop there. Other former employees, also speaking anonymously, stated that they were told to search out other popular apps and games so they could copy some of their features for Zynga's own use.

    Couldn't agree more.

I vote we all delete our accounts, Tribe.net's value will plummet, we buy it for pennies on the dollar, engage in some actual marketing of the service, everyone signs back on, we restore their accounts from the server backup we now own, everyone redoubles their efforts to actually USE the site as their social claendar again, and off we go into the sunset.

As for Pincus... jeez, what is there to say?

Douche, meet bag. Same as it ever was.

Maybe we're actually lucky that Tribe wasn't more profitable initially. We'd be stuck with that hosehead to this day. Or worse, whoever he sold out to. (ie Wade, et al.)

as the original founder (who copied another site to make tribe.net ) ..
he ought to be ashamed of himself... hei is a pirateteer and illegal cloner...

for those who don't know... tribe history leson 101...
he sold tribe.net to cisco systems several years ago -who then turned around and they sold the social network site part again to another - "who shall go nameless" by me ... (remember when it was down for a month) ... so he has NO connection to tribe.net now....

we are seperate, from him for a LONG time....
and a new tribe.net beta3 system upgrade is soon coming out...so i hear.
      .
personally i found the comments VERY telling -
as to the cloning enviorment he has created andhow he has put people at risk... and takes none himself.
also the related articles when i clicked on his name, were very interesting, and a good lesson of tribe.net and his history in the making...
