Do you actually know John Law?

Do you know ALL the details of what has happened?

I don't know John Law. I don't know all of the specifics. What I do know is that I find it interesting that nearly everyone is focusing on this bit from John Law, however what I read was that his complaint was filed in repsonse to M2's arbitration bit. Nope, it's as if everyone skipped over that bit and is focusing on John Law, like he woke up one morning and pulled a complaint out of his ass and decided to file it.

Like I said, I don't know all the details. I am following this out of interest in the event, the culture that has come out of it, and because it's actually kinda nice every once in a while when someone speaks about BM without the glazed over look of someone brainwashed by a cult.

I like going but I also recognize that it is hard, not always worth it, a lot of bullshit around it, and frankly not for everyone. But it seems that expressing that kind of opinion gets you called close-minded and who knows what else, as if in order to appreciate BM in anyway you have to be one of the harveyites.

Well said. I am friends with John. Hell, he was the minister at my wedding and we were just over at his house last week for dinner. How's that for full disclosure. I first went in 96, last went in 2006, brought an Art Car, and had a hell of a great time.

But still, it's very strange to me that especially here on Tribe no one is talking about the Larry vs. M2 thing. I'd like to know a lot more about that, personally. If anyone knows please share so that this isn't so one-sided.

You know, what's funny is that folks seem to think that John wants some 'piece' of Burning Man. As far as I know, he doesn't want anything to do with the event itself. He simply doesn't trust M2 or Larry to be the sole owner of the *name* and *image* of Burning Man. Seeing that they are now fighting over that, and pulling John into that arbitration too, John replied with this lawsuit. So either he wants no one to own it, or he wants it to go back to the three-way ownership and for the other two to honor the original deal from '96 when he left.

And for those hateful comments stating that John should 'get a life' or 'let go and move onto something else' or 'focus his energies at a more positive direction' well all I can say is that he's probably the most well balanced and rounded person I know. He's very busy with his new son, his book, helping his wife's business, and running his own business as well as lot of adventures. It's not like he's some bitter person with too much time on his hands. Go read his blog posts if you wanna really get a better idea of where he's coming from: johnlawspeaks.wordpress.com/

Thanks for sharing the other side of the coin. Those of use who are not on a first name basis with any of the people involved just keep reading tid bits here and there about lawsuits, and whats going to happen to BM?, and what not - it's hard to piece it all together. I suppose we won't really ever know the full story, but its nice to know John isn't out to slay BM.

    Sabkha Conflagration

    Playa, also known as sabkha,
A conflagration is a large, uncontrollable fire. It may affect many buildings in an urban setting, or burn many acres in a rural area. The phenomenon of the firestorm, or fire raining from the sky, often fuels such large fires.

Well...when we went last year we just told my employers and customers we were going camping in the desert with some friends.

Funny how many of my customers (all from Tahoe/Reno) said, "Oh, Burning Man huh?".

Regardless of whether or not the name will have to be officially changed, I think we would all recognize a name including Black Rock. A tribe, for instance, including a title like Citizens of Black Rock, could easily be started up by whoever is moderating this one so that we can all move on over to a tribe that will not be shut down due to BM trademark issues.

How about "Fucking Burn!" or "Love & Ashes" (That one is attributed to my friend Ed, who signs all of her letters that way.

Well, the sad fact is that being in Nevada for one week a year does not make you a resident.

Instead of Snow birds, how about "Dust Birds," LLC.

I think "Love& Ashes" is one of the better ideas. Should we start an LLC and be ready for when the Larry the Gardener goes back to making
a living as a landscaper? We can take over the BLM permit. That is all it takes, really, to hold the event. I would vow to give the people of BRC toilet paper on Wednesday to Friday, at least, as an improvement, and make the event longer.
