Ask him about physics of electronic surfaces and LEED (Low-energy electron diffraction). It's interesting, because only a few crystalline surfaces twenty years ago had been adequately characterized. I think the copper (111) surface is one of the starters....the work was done in the theoretical physics division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I'd be curious to know the existing state of the art. Everybody was playing with the high-energy physics for so long....you know, the 'large caliber syndrome', that they couldn't see the forest for the trees.

In order to have an accelerator (linear) that could provide a wave frequency down to around, say, a Planck length it'd consume 1 trillion drums of oil per second and the would be the diameter of the Milky Way.
There may be more efficient ways to produce high energy particles than using current technology, even scaled up to ludicrous levels. After all, cosmic rays are observed to have as much as a billion times the energy of the best that we can do (so far).

...While it is a paradox to go back in time and kill your grandfather, physicists agree there is no paradox if you go back in time and save him from being hit by a bus. In the case of the Higgs and the collider, it is as if something is going back in time to keep the universe from being hit by a bus. Although just why the Higgs would be a catastrophe is not clear. If we knew, presumably, we wouldn't be trying to make one.
