I'm not sure if this is off topic for here but I'll let the mods decide. In my opinion, caring for the local communities and the playa is on topic.
There is a petition put out by the group Nevadans Against Garbage, a local Winnemucca group that are concerned about the proposal to ship California garbage to the Jungo area (north of BRC but still playa) where a permit has been issued for a landfill.
Here's the petition: answers.polldaddy.com/poll/2062522/
Here's the group's website for background information: www.nevadansagainstgarbage.com
Seems Humboldt County passed an ordinance to allow garbage from outside the region to be dumped in that county at sites other than the Humboldt County regional landfill. Now they've issued a permit to Norcal (Recology) to allow for a landfill at Jungo which can accept hazardous waste.
This may be an issue that individual burners want to take up to support the locals who are very upset about this prospect and who were not given a chance for public comment on the ordinance.
I've written a blog entry to inform burners who read my non-Tribe blog here: seeingredinthesouthwest.blogspot.com/
Might be time we took LNT home with us - seems ridiculous that Californian garbage would need to be transported to dump on the playa in Nevada.
I'm of the opinion it's on topic.
LNT and Radical Self-reliance both seem to dictate that we, as burners, take responisibility for ourselves and the garbage we produce.
It seems sort of all-out STUPID to put a landfill in an are where the groundwater table, alkali or not, is less than 30 feet from the surface.
But that's just my opinion.
i wonder how much playa garbage will end up being transported right back to nevada after responsible burners throw trash away at home.. using the trash service they pay for
Good question, Chris. Hopefully burners will sign the petition and possibly put a stop to a landfill on the playa. The locals sure don't want it. We had an impact on the Sempra coal question a couple years ago by voicing our opinion. Maybe we can support the locals at Winnemucca who don't want this dump.
Sure worth having a look at the background info anyway. And signing the petition may have a positive impact if enough of us do it.
